TV weatherman Uncle Weatherwise is the condo's newest arrival. But when a hurricane he predicted would bypass Palmetto Beach forces an evacuation, Kate Kennedy stumbles upon his corpse. Suddenly she's on a trail of suspects that may lead back to the Cold War.
Hurricane Homicide by Nora Charles (really?), is the 4th book in the "Senior Sleuth" series with main character, widowed Kate Kennedy.
Kate and everyone else in her condo building are forced to evacuate quickly when a hurricane, which resident and TV forecaster Uncle Weatherwise predicted would miss Palmetto Beach, instead heads right for them. The next morning, Kate stumbles upon the weatherman's dead body outside the shelter. She isn't planning to get involved, but when she's questioned by police officer (and acquaintance) Nick Carbone, he asks her about the summer of 1950. Now Kate can't help but begin piecing clues together, all of which may lead to a murderer.
Color me confused. The story made precious little sense, and it didn't help matters that it kept vacillating between present day and the summer of 1950, when Kate met Russian-born Sophie and developed a tentative friendship with her. This is purely subjective, but I don't like stories that skip around, time-wise. I didn't get a good grasp of the characters, and the plot had precious little flow. The motive for murder was bizarre, and the resolution was not satisfying, in my opinion. In short, did not like.
I bought one other book in this series. I am stubborn enough to read it, although I guarantee it won't be any time soon. This was a short book, and it took me yonks to read it, because it failed to hold my interest. Very bland and blah. Two stars.
This book was kind of like a sitcom version of a cozy mystery. The characters are brought in and action ensues. Other reviewers have commented on the lack of character development but for me the characters and the dialogue and action were so strong I knew who the characters were. I didn't need a lot of descriptions, their actions and speech told me what I needed to know. Leaving out the description made it very efficient, nothing was present that didn't need to be and everything that was there moved the story forward. I loved the characters I loved the excitement, I loved the pacing, I loved the historical tie-in, I thought it was great. I wish I could find the rest of the series (because this is the only one I've read and yes, I still felt like I knew the characters).
Flashbacks to the 50’s were my favorite part of this story. First time I’ve read a senior sleuth story! My husband bought me a “blind date with a book” for Christmas 🎄 and this was the title we unwrapped. Reading about being ground zero for a hurricane as a Floridian is a little uncomfortable though. Overall 3 stars and fun to read.
This is book 4 of the Kate Kennedy, Senior Sleuth Mystery series. I picked this up as a library discard for 50 cents. I normally read a series in order but I went ahead and read this one without having read the other three books that came before it.
I liked the story and characters. I might have liked the book a bit better had I read the other three books first so that I would have had more character development.
Maybe my favorite book of the series. I have one more left to read then it looks like I will have read them all. I miss these characters already. Especially the heroine, Kate Kennedy. Solid choice for a fellow 'cozy' lover. :)
A delightful mystery featuring Kate Kennedy, Senior Sleuth. Kate lives in an over 55 community on the Florida coast. This wonderful, easy reading cozy is full of "characters", a murder or two, and a rollicking good read.
Two hurricanes and a revenge murder for something that happened 50 years earlier. Everyone has motive and secrets----one of Kate's guilty memories is explored.
