Review of 3rd Sight by Ian Woodhead
5 stars

If you are in the market for gory, graphic, splatterpunk, in your face and then some, horror, look no further: this is it. An amazing new spin, a potential most of us would never have thought of (thankfully), a “monster” that is implacable and seemingly unstoppable; and a protagonist/narrator who is unfortunately no better than he should be and not necessarily a very likable chump. It’s all here; and I have the suspicion this story will keep me awake at night, or else having really ugly nightmares. I believe this may be the first I’ve read by the tremendously prolific and imaginative Mr. Woodhead, but it certainly shall not be the last.

Adrian runs with bad company, despite his upbringing on the “better side of the tracks.” Psychologically, I would guess that Adrian doesn’t like himself much, but then maybe it is as one of the other characters decides: he is just antisocial and doesn’t like others. In any event, he works on the shop floor of an electronics superstore run by his uncle, although no one else at the store realizes their connection. Inexplicably to him, he is targeted by a very weird type of “monster,” which can disguise itself as-well, almost anybody-and which prefers the delectation of long-drawn out, torturous, killing: the more energy expended, the better, don’t you know. In decades, no one has been able to stop or prevent this creature, but if Adrian doesn’t find a way, he will be the one losing his sanity and imprisoned for any number of gruesome murders of family, friends, and acquaintances.

Book Info: Genre: Horror Reading Level: Adult

Disclosure: I picked up a free copy for my Kindle from Amazon.com; since it is Ian Woodhead’s birthday 4/19/12, I decided to have a little Ian Woodhead marathon this week in celebration. Happy Birthday, Ian!

Third Sight Synopsis: Driving its serrated talons through their hot skin fills it with unbelievable pleasure. Only the immense waves of life energy detonating from its chosen watcher can come close to the almost orgasmic experience of deleting their physical form from this realm.

Adrian Winters is unaware that close to his home, a newborn demon has chosen him to be the watcher. Very soon, his loving family and all his friends are about to become food for the demon.

Adrian will witness every gruesome death!

My Thoughts: Wow, this is one trippy book; it keep popping back and forth between reality and hallucinations and other realms until you have no idea what is going on. Plus there is no telling who to trust, or even who really is what they say they are. Crazy book – definitely have to pay attention or you’ll get completely lost in it. However, if you enjoy horror or bizarro fiction, you should enjoy this book. 5 out of 5 stars

This story starts with the murder of a pet and moves on to the unraveling of the life of Adrian Winters with hardly a chance to stop for breath. A demon latches on to Adrians life and draws strength through killing his nearest and dearest while forcing him to watch.
The horror scenes are very graphic and well written and with the switch between realities and loss of time you are never 100% sure of what will happen next.
If you can imagine if Clive Barker had written A Nightmare on Elm Street you'd have an idea of what to expect from this excellent story.

ONCE again the delightfully twisted mind of Ian Woodhead has concocted yet another cracking horror story – and this one really isn’t for the faint-hearted.

Something demonic and nasty has latched onto Adrian and it’s going to kill everyone he knows and cares about unless he can figure out how to kill it first. If he fails, then not only is his girlfriend dead meat – he’ll be left to take the blame.

Adrian is no angel himself. A middle class boy with a taste for the bad-boy life, he’s chosen to work in a dead end job in a retail goods store, and hangs out with a tough crowd. This rough-neck crew he hangs around with know little of anything of his background, and he wants to keep it that way. He thinks he’s tough enough to handle anything, until the demonic beastie turns up and starts to tear its way through the people he knows, killing his friends one by one in a gruesome manner.

The thing isn’t just killing his friends and acquaintances, it wants him to see the gory details, and steadily draws him onto a horrifying high-stakes mind-game. Tough – he ain’t seen nothing yet.

Typical of Woodhead’s work, his characters are rough and ready types, denizens of the dubious side of life, seedy and violent, morally ambiguous, and every bit the kind of people you ought to recoil from, but the warts and all depiction of them as human beings, endears them to the reader. Well, it’s essential if you’re going to be drawn into the story and care what happens.

Again, the author doesn’t hold back on the gore either, although having said that, it isn’t gratuitous in the sense of gore for gore’s sake; rather a lubricant of good solid horror that leaves one on no doubt the fragility of the human frame when faced with an entity that takes delight in dismantling it.

Third Sight is deeper and darker than Woodhead’s previous works, I found. The psychological twists and turns keep you unbalanced so you never get that easy feeling of ‘oh, I’ve worked it out’; the reader like Adrian is kept very much on the toes.

Were it not for some editing glitches that upset the flow here and there, this would easily be a five star novel. As it is, the glitches jarred even my rather resilient tolerance to such issues, to the extent that I found it upset the flow of the story in places – to the cost of a star.

That’s a shame, because it is a rip-roaring read, a great story, and deliciously gruesome horror with a psychological aspect that demands it’s not read in neutral. This novel doesn’t coast – it’s rages along the neural pathways and makes the mind shudder at the thrill of it all.

Third Sight is both horrifying and terrifying! The twists and turns of the plot kept me reading even when I was afraid to turn the page. The storyline is intriguing and fast-paced while the action is dark and gruesome.

Adrian Winters is just living. He's not really the nicest of human beings but then, he's not the baddest either. Not really, it's just he doesn't seem to appreciate much, not even his beautiful girlfriend Donna. But something dark and sinister is about to blow his world apart.
For some strange reason, Adrian is singled out by a demon. A horrifying monster who sucks the life force out of its victims - the more fear and pain the victim is feeling before they die, the better. The stronger the demon becomes. The demon selects his victims from those Adrian knows and loves and he is forced to witness their demise. It becomes a race against time for Adrian to discover how to rid the world of this evil before it gets rid of him.

For me, this book ticked all the boxes of what horror should do. Keep the pages turning and make your eyes nearly pop out of their sockets! If you haven't got a strong stomach for gruesomeness, take it easy on this one or avoid it. The demon is nasty!

I loved the authors writing style and the way he built imagery. I also liked that he got some humour in there... I mean, where else do you hide the body of your best friends brother whist your girlfriends waiting downstairs?!
There are scenes where only Adrian can see what is happening and these are very well done too, completely sucked me in.

Strong writing/plot line and unique... Perfect. The only reason it didn't reach 5 stars for me was the ending. It's very well rounded but I am a difficult reader to please in regards to story endings.

I shall definitely be reading more offerings from this author. :0) A fantastic roller-coaster of a horror. Twisted and page turning.

This is the story of Adrian. Unbeknownst to himself, a demon has targeted him and designated him to be a 'watcher'. Everyone Adrian knows and loves will be killed in ever more horrific ways. Soon everything Adrian thinks he know will be turned upside down and the fight for everyone and everything he knows and loves will take an epic turn. Can Adrian stop the demon or are his friends and family doomed?

Where do I start with this? I am worried my review won't do the book justice. First off, I will say there are a few typo's and formatting errors but I am not reviewing them, just the story, and they were not bad enough to spoil my enjoyment of the story. The story belted along and was all out action. At times quite gruesome action at that, not one for weak stomachs! Adrian's descent into almost madness as he tried to work out what was happening to him and what was real and what wasn't was a roller-coaster ride. It enjoyed every minute of this & it was so good I even dreamt about it! I recommend this totally.
