Young Chance N. Counter thought her life was nothing more than a series of meaningless, random events. But when she finds some crinkly yellow pages from an old book, with the same drawing of a shadowy door in each one, this all suddenly changes. Pages in hand, and armed with only a flashlight, Chance finds one of the shadowy portals and steps into the place between night and day... it is the place where nightmares and fairytales and creatures that go bump in the night were created. It is the place of lore and legend and dreams, and the place where the Shadow King reigns supreme. But to leave, Chance, along with a new ally (who happens to be a talking fox) must summon all of her courage and use all of her wit to travel through this bizarre world and find her way home.
Daniel Frost has created a very unique world of shadows where things are the opposite of what they really seem and colors are ones that you have yet to ever lay eyes on before. Grab your flashlight, put on a good pair of shoes and you'll be off on a grand adventure with Chance!
Chance and her parents have just moved to town. As a very observant and sweet little girl, she loves to spend her time at the local bookstore, browsing and petting the store owner's cats as much as she loves to go out and explore her new surroundings. While trying to get to a cat on a high bookshelf, the cat knocks over some papers that has some mysterious pictures on them. Chance takes them and is determined to find out if these drawings mean anything. She soon discovers that on each of these drawings there is a little door sketched on them. When she discovers that these pictures are actual places around town, she soon finds a hidden door and that's where Chance's real adventures begin. The story flows at a quick pace and we soon discover many intriguing things in this new world. The descriptive narration is captivating - you will find yourself holding your breath and hoping that Chance will be able to get through this strange world between night and day, and outwit the Shadow King to get to freedom.
This is a definite must read for everyone who is a fan Neil Gaiman's Coraline,a dark and fantastic new world awaits you!!!
'Between' is a fun and fast paced MG/YA fantasy adventure that follows a young girl named Chance as she navigates the strange land between night and day and battles the Shadow King for her freedom. The novel is very well written and flows easily, which makes this a quick and entertaining read. The narrative is full of wonderful descriptions of the characters, setting, and the situations encountered. Frost does a great job with the storyline and keeping the reader invested in the story - just waiting to find out how Chance will make it through the next obstacle on her journey. The characters are all very well rounded and likeable, especially our young heroine Chance, who immediately makes her way into the heart of the reader and we find ourselves rooting for her to triumph over evil and make it back home. Although this is a MG/YA novel, it definitely appeals to readers of all ages and to lovers of all genres. It is one of those few books that transcends labels and age groups to provide a wonderful tale of finding yourself and of courage.

A great middle grade book! The heroine is a girl who allows her curiosity to get the better of her and it leads her on an adventure full of fantasy and mystery. All is not as it seems and a witty companion joins her for the ride as she battles her way through the shadows. Very fun and entertaining!
Great book for middle grade readers. It's a bit of fantasy, some paranormal... and a lot of fun. Love the main character and how the book comes together at the end with a really interesting twist. ...Good stuff.
