ONE OF THE EARLIEST PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDIES OF LESBIANS
He wrote in the first chapter of this 1935 book, "The assertion has been made that female sex perversion is only found among the intellectuals, more so among geniuses, and in the progress of humanity such practices go hand in hand with civilization. But it is common among the savage women in the wilds of Africa and South America. Sexual perversities were found to be of genesic instinct among the Eskimo women and the women and the women of the uncivilized tribes of Peru." (Pg. 5) He adds, "Abnormal sexual practices are carried on to this day because perversions are not vices but mental diseases, afflictions that enlightenment cannot cure." (Pg. 7)
He observes, "The stoppage of menstruation was noticed by a number of psychologists in [female] homosexuals taking the part of a man... The stoppage of the menstrual flux is expressive of the wish in accordance with which the organ, the uterus, refuses to function. The womb simply co-operates with its possessor... Thus Nature assists homosexuality." (Pg. 125)
He argues, "Can a homosexual woman be cured? The answer to the above question, in the light of modern psychology is: `Yes.'" (Pg. 159) He adds, "No one is born a homosexual. On the contrary, every one is born a bi-sexual. Some environmental conditions... cause sexual relationship with her own sex. In other words, the love of one woman for another is a psychic disorder, an abnormality in an otherwise normal life, not an organic disease. There is no reason why, being a nervous disorder, it could not be cured with the cooperation of the patient." (Pg. 161-162)
He suggests, "No sexual aberration can be looked upon as a vice as long as it is beyond the control of the one who practices it." (Pg. 239)
This book of professed 'modern psychology' is grossly out-of-date, of course; but there were far worse opinions out there in 1935.

5 stars cuz of the title...one of the greatest ever! I have a 1st edition. Can't recall when or where acquired and it's in ungreat condition, still...
I've only read bits and pieces of it. Very vintage-y tone. Probably only audience today would be someone interested in history of sex ed.
There are chapters on homosex, S&M, masturbation (which can cause "mental diseases".
Here's a descrip of chapter on fellatio:
"Mouth eroticism in virtuous women - the unconscious attitude of the hysterical female - fellatio a regressive trend to infantilism."
Institutioanlized homosexuals: "...the cunning of the low class of homosexual woman - the use of negro blues...".
Gotta love it!
Alhough each sexual proclivity is a "perversion" author puts forth, in some instances, ideas counter to prevailng views of the tme (i.e., masturbation leads to insane asylum).
Dunno why GR's has this as pub in 2013; it was pub in 1935.
