The day the starships came was the day that man became a hunted animal on his own planet. From the moment the missiles failed to fire the human race was on the run.
This book was a totally random pick from my local used bookstore, purely on account of the great cover art - which, by the way, is totally off: that creature certainly does not look like an gigantic, obese, pretty surly cat in the book!
It was a lucky find! \o/ At first, I thought the somewhat detached writing style (let's just say that we don't exactly explore the psyche or our silent, stoic and very competent hero) was going to be detrimental, but it is not. The real protagonist of this book is the adventure, the fast-paced exploration of this post-apocalyptic world and this was such a fun ride!
It's quite pulp-fictionny, which I do not mean at all in a negative way. There's good and bad pulp in the same way there's good and bad everything, and those thinking that traditionally literary works, with some kind of deeper take on the meaning of life embedded in it, are the only books qualified to be called great are just missing the point. *End of mini-rant
Back to the book at hand, I'm actually not going to call it great either, though for different reasons. There were a couple recurrent themes that I think have aged a bit, unfortunately. For example, the very stereotypical portrayal of any scientific/academic character was a bit cringe (fortunately there are few of those and they don't take much page space, so it's easy to gloss over). I'm also not sure how I feel about the author's recurrent emphasis on the youth of all the good and attractive "girls" in this book , with the only one called "women" being the "wretched" ones ().
The adventure and the feeling of discovery were so on point! I loved the way the hero kept being taken in by different peoples and experiencing all those ways humans had adapted to their new world. It made me remember the feeling of watching Rahan as a kid (which I realize is probably somewhat of an obscure reference to anybody not French, so here.)
Lettura comunque consigliata veloce e simpatica.
Finally an alien invasion story with an unpredictable twist-Earth is quickly invaded and turned into a hunting ground for strange alien beasts and the human survivors are caught in the middle. A little dated but would make a great movie.
