'미래'를 화두로 삼은 베르나르 베르베르의 소설 『카산드라의 거울』 제1권. 한국인이 주연급으로 등장한다는 점 때문에 출간 전부터 화제를 모았던 작품으로, 베르베르의 기존 작품들과 다른 성격을 보여준다. 미래를 예언하지만 정작 자신의 과거는 전혀 모르는 17살 소녀 카산드라. 자폐증으로 주변과의 소통이 쉽지 않은 카산드라는 고아 기숙 학교에서 탈출하여 파리 외곽의 쓰레기 하치장으로 흘러 들어간다. 그리고 그곳에서 왕년의 외인부대원, 전직 에로 영화배우, 한때의 아프리카 흑인 주술사, 탈북자 출신의 한국인 컴퓨터 천재를 만난다. 네 명의 노숙자들과 함께 재앙을 막으려는 카산드라의 노력은 온갖 모험으로 이어지는데….

미래를 예견하는 카산드라는 미래의 재앙을 막으려는 한편, 자신의 사라진 과거를 찾으려 한다. 그리고 카산드라로 인해 네 명의 노숙자들은 자신들을 외면한 세상을 위해 싸우는 전사이자, 이상적인 미래를 꿈꾸는 몽상가로 변해 간다. 작가는 탈북자 한국인을 등장시킨 이유에 대해, 우리가 관심을 갖지 않는 사람들에게 발언권을 주고 싶었다고 말한 바 있다. 베르베르 특유의 기발한 상상력이 가득한 소설이지만, 긴박하고 강렬한 액션을 담아 현실 사회의 이슈들에 직접 다가서고 있다는 점이 새롭다. 과학적 상상력과 신화적 상상력으로 나누어지는 베르베르 작품세계의 두 계보를 종합적으로 잇는 소설이다.

About the author

Bernard Werber's "Ants" trilogy made him one of France's most popular science fiction novelists in the 90s. Werber began studying journalism in 1982 in Paris, where he discovered the work of sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick. In 1991 he published the novel Les Fourmis (Empire of the Ants), a complex fantasy novel in which ants were the heroes and humans the pesty antagonists. The novel became a cult hit across Europe, and Werber followed it with two other books in the same vein: Le Jour des Fourmis (Day of the Ants,1992) and La Révolution des Fourmis (Revolution of the Ants, 1995). His other books include L'Empire des Anges (Empire of the Angels, 2000) and L'Arbre des possibles (The Tree of Possibles, 2002).

This book is about Cassandra who does not know about her past but know people's future that no one believe and later, trying to find her past with his friend. This book is worst book I ever read because even though this book was in Korean, I can only understand how story flows, but not in depth, and it takes a lot of time to think through while I read. However, seeing people's future was interesting topic to me and that's why I did not stop reading this book.
