About the author

Courtney Conant

4 books97 followers
Born and raised in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Courtney began writing at a very young age and was very passionate about it. Since moving to Arizona at age 16, she took a long break from it as she seemed to have hit a very long period of writer's block. She began writing again in 2008, due to finding NaNoWriMo which is an amazing contest/challenge for anyone needing that extra motivation. Since then, she has completed her first novel and has started work on the sequel.

She is an avid reader with a deep love of fantasy and horror. Growing up, horror novels were her main selection from the library shelves. She was inspired to write from an early age from reading novels by Stephen King. It wasn't until later in her life that she formed a love of fantasy and has continued down that path. Reading authors such as Jacqueline Carey and George R.R. Martin lead her to expand her views on what to seek out when it came to finding new books.

I thought The Blood Moon of Winter was a fast paced easy read. I did not want to put my nook down; there was always something that had my attention. I never hit a dull or slow moment. Just as one intriguing moment ended another took its place.
Before you know it you are near the end, you have so many questions in mind, and you are dying to turn the page. Then there are no more pages to turn, the book has ended leaving you looking for Beyond the Known Horizon.
I would recommend The Blood Moon of Winter by Courtney Conant to everyone. With all that is going on in Lily’s life there is sure to be something to catch your attention.

First I would like to thank Books4Tomorrow and the author for sending me a copy to review this book. :)

What is you were a typical woman, with a mother and sister who desperately want you to meet a man and get married (LOL I know these people), and one day in the park where you read, you meet the man, who happens to be your favorite author of your favorite books, who is gunna be the one to help you ascend into Goddess-hood? Yep, that sentence is how I can sum up the book without spoilers. Now, this one is a little different with the plot summary. Most of the soon-to-be Goddesses know at least something about their gift. Lilyana, aka Lily, has no conception of this... she kind of freaks out when she starts having these very realistic dreams with a giant white panther, telling her she is gunna save their world and become their goddess. BUT, there's always a but, you know, but she must finish her transition so she can leave earth and ascend in their realm. I felt that this was a nice difference as there is usually a happy ending for these kind of stories... However, there is a nice little cliff hanger at the end, and a maybe not so happy fairy tale ending... personally, I think the ending is perfect for setting up for the next book. :)

The writing style is a little different but in a good way. And the characters are well rounded, but I would have liked a better back ground description. For example, why is Lily the way she is, especially when it comes to guys, and love, and relationships? And the only other flaw (I can't call it that, but I don't have another word to use) is in the beginning parts of the book, the "person" narrating goes from different perspectives. Normally I like that, but I was a little confused in the flipping quickly between Lily & the Oracle (&/or Elders)and some of the explanations were a little unclear... BUT, it then gets clearer as the story goes on, so you figure it all out. Maybe I shouldn't be all lazy and expect explanations right up front... there's no mystery that way right? LOL

All in all, I liked this book, and I look forward to see what's going to happen, especially at the end with that nice little cliff hanger :) 3.5 PAWS for me!

I really, really enjoyed this book. It is probably a 4.5 instead of a 5 because of a few editing issues, but the story was wonderful. It is difficult to review this book without giving too much away, so if I spoil anything, I apologize in advance. Here is what I liked about this book:
The main character is an avid reader!
There is a talking feline.... I so love talking felines!!!!!
Jason is a writer. What is sexier than a writer????
The book was an enjoyable read. There were no parts where I was tempted to skim.
The Tattoo!!!!!!
It is a book I can see myself reading again.
It is unique and does not follow the same story arc I have seen in so many novels lately.
It is beyond a bargain at only $.99.

Ok, there are a ton more, but I really am afraid I am going to ruin too much of the plot if I share them. I am anxiously waiting the next installment of this series. There is so much rich content the author can pull from. The possibilities are endless. Personally, along with the the main storyline, I am looking forward to seeing what part her mom may or may not play as the series progresses.

If I had an older teen daughter interested in reading this, I would think twice about it, but not necessarily dismiss it outright. There is one scene that is definitely adult, but it is not x rated adult. It would definitely not be for a younger teen.

Conant spins a yarn for the ages. A seemingly ordinary woman discovers that she's actually the goddess of another world. Falling in love as she explores her new parameters, Lilyana and Jason are meant to be together~~here OR there. The unexpected twist at the very end will compel us all to dive into the sequel.

Conant's storytelling lends itself to this genre. She knows her stuff, and all fans of fantasy should enjoy the time spent in her world. Some of my favorite elements of the book I have to leave out of my review because they might spoil things for you, but trust me, you will see many original elements come to life in these pages.

BLOOD MOON OF WINTER is a love story, a fantasy yarn, and a tale told from an original heart. Enjoy the ride.

(This book review/author interview was originally posted at http://emlynchand.com/2011/02/20/book...)

Imagine that you are an avid reader who unexpectedly meets your favorite author. Now imagine that your favorite author unexpectedly begins to fall in love with you. Sound like a story? Well, now imagine that right at the moment you begin to fall in love, you realize that you are meant to exist not in this world but in a world you formerly believed to be only a dream. Congratulations, you have just entered the life of Lilyana Makay, the heroine of Courtney Conant’s novel The Blood Moon Of Winter.

Lilyana is a reader’s sort of protagonist because she herself constantly immerses herself in books. Reading The Blood Moon Of Winter is reminiscent of standing in a hallway of mirrors, watching your image reflect itself back over and over again. The novel is a sort of a meta-story, demonstrating its understanding of its own plot and characters as plot and characters through sly little comments about the path the story is taking.

Reading the novel also gives the reader a glimpse into the invisible character of Conant herself. An avid reader, Conant admits that many of Lilyana’s characteristics ended up being unintentional representations of her own self. Coming from a childhood that voraciously absorbed the imaginary worlds created by literature, Conant aims to bring her readers into a world that will capture their interest in the same way hers was captured as a child. The life of Lilyana, who is torn between newfound love in one world and newfound purpose in another, will resonate with readers who often feel torn between the real world and the world created by literature.

Unlike most fictional worlds that take ages to invent, Conant’s flowed out of her like a story that needed to be told. A writer since the prodigious age of four, Conant’s writing came to an abrupt halt at 16 when her entire body of works was burned up in a fire. From that time until she began work on The Blood Moon Of Winter, Conant suffered severe writer’s block. It wasn’t until she discovered NaNoWriMo (an annual contest where writers attempt to write a full 50,000 word novel over the course of the month of November) that her creative juices began to flow freely again.

With a newfound motivation to write, Conant began with one sentence and watched, shocked, as that sentence transformed not into just any book, but a book that contained worlds within it. As the plot progressed, she thought she was writing chick lit, but suddenly a fantasy plot appeared, seemingly out of nowhere. This unexpected shift of genre left Conant astonished at the power of unknown creativity and leaves readers astonished at the power of integrated genres. By crossing the gap between two genres, the story of Lilyana becomes even more compelling, speaking to an even wider audience.

As a versatile musician whose day job has very little to do with art, Conant knows from personal experience the power of crossing boundaries and integrating genres or disciplines, both in literature and in life. She proposes that few people are merely one type of artist—whether through the way they approach life or the actual artistic activities in which they participate, artists maintain a passion that influences the way they think, act, and create.

Conant’s passion is obvious in how she handles her characters, themes, and plot. The book as it stands has been edited very little since its NaNoWriMo inception, so the creative passion that inspired it is obvious in every progressing sentence. The romance aspect of the novel flowers as naturally as the writing style of the author. The characters become so real to the reader that the transition into a fantasy style becomes all the more jarring, yet somehow natural.

Throughout the novel, Lilyana’s two separate worlds serve as a reminder to the reader of the duality in all of us. Reading The Blood Moon Of Winter not only draws readers into fantastic new worlds but also grounds them in the reality that is imagination. Conant’s creative abilities and passion for her work bring out the artist in all her readers. The Blood Moon Of Winter is truly an inspiration for writers, readers, and artists of all sorts.

My Thoughts *Spoilers ahead. Don’t say I didn’t warn you*

Lilyana Makay is a bit OCD and introverted to the max. She would rather spend her days sitting and reading books than interacting with other human beings. The only people she can really stand to be around are her sister and the twins. The author does a great job of really nailing down this character. Even in the narrative voice, you can really feel how much Lilyana desperately wants to be left alone. She enjoys her peaceful and structured existence. But that wouldn’t make for much of a story, now would it? Of course not. That’s just getting to know the character. And once you are firmly rooted in this character it becomes even more enjoyable to watch her ordered world, flip on its side! The author did a wonderful job really putting this character through the paces.

So, Lilyana’s perfect, albeit somewhat boring, life gets shaken up by the introduction of Jason Caurns. He’s not only one of her favorite authors, but an available bachelor too. Despite her need to be a loner, she’s drawn to him, as if fate is telling them to be together. For the first time in her life, though she tries very hard to fight it, Lilyana finds someone who she could see herself spending the rest of her life with.

Ah, But fate is always a fickle friend and one never knows what its real purpose is. Jason’s entrance into her life is also the catalyst for the ultimate change yet to come. The moment Jason is introduced, things begin happening. Their very first outing, an innocent motorcycle ride in the desert turns deadly when a snake bite, sends Lilyana to the hospital. While she’s there she begins to have what she thinks are hallucinogenic dreams of another world—a world that is waiting for her to save it. Only these aren’t dreams. As she and Jason work out the truth, Lilyana learns fates plan. From that moment on Lilyana is split: torn between revelations that she is the long awaited goddess who can save the land of Makayra, and the new love she’s found with Jason.

Without spoiling the rest of it for you, I have to say, the ending was not predictable at all. Kudos to the author there! That’s pretty hard to do these days. I did find myself angry when I got to the last page, though. Not because I didn’t like the story, far from it, I loved it. I was mad because it left me with such a cliffhanger; I needed there to be more. That says quite a lot for the author that she made me so emotionally invested in the characters in such a short time. Needless to say, I’ll definitely be adding book two to my TBR list when it comes out.

"Did you notice, there's blood on the moon tonight?" - Bloodmoon (1977)

Lilyana Makay prefers the company of her books and her sister's children. she would rather stay home than go out on dates even on a weekend until she meets one of her favorite authors in the flesh - handsome Jason Caurns. they go for a ride on his bike on Christmas Day and the events that follow will change Lily's perception of what is real and fantastic as she is transported to a dying world. in this other dimension, only Lily as the reincarnated Goddess of Makayra could save it.
author Courtney Conant's premise of an ordinary woman with a destiny beyond her wildest imaginings makes this book an interesting read. her protagonist Lily sounds so average - just another lady going about her daily routine and keeping things simple in her life. little did Lily know about the task that she was really born for.
i liked how the writer wove and connected the events that would transform Lily into someone extraordinary. i also loved the author's descriptions of enchanting Makayra and Lily's striking tattoo. what bothered me though was how accepting Lily was of her new role. there was not much struggle or confusion on her part. i found her too calm. even her willingness to leave everything and everyone behind in exchange for a title in a strange new world was not a typical reaction.
perhaps everyone in his or her own way is marked for greatness. maybe Lily was waiting for her chance and when she did, she took it hook, line and sinker.
i was also surprised by an erotic scene. i have no problems with it. it is just that it caught me unaware. if it were not included or if it were toned down a bit, this book would have reached a wider audience especially younger readers.
The Blood Moon of Winter, however, was still a good read. i hope the sequel turns out well.

Okay i need to admit that i didn't expect much from the book. Funny..everytime i don't expect to like a book it always surprise me!

I generally really liked the book but of course there are some small parts that bothered me and i will mention. So let's see...what i liked eh? Well for starters i fall in love with the main character. Lily is...me. From feelings, her life and how she thinks about everything is me in a way. So i was completely connected with her. She liked to be away with a book than do something else (whatever that was), she was avoiding some certain things in her life cause she felt more safe like it. And when something unexpected that makes her happy happens she totally loses herself into it.

I started from the character comments..shame on me..let's hope to the writing part. While it was simple it had a way to capture you. It was just flowing...I like that the author took her time with the story. First you get to know the main characters, their lives and what surround them and then with little steps you were getting into the main story.

Another thing i need to say it's about the sex scene. You know how weird i'm with that stuff and how much i hate it actually. There was only one sex scene and for the first time in my life it didn't bother me O.O I know right? I think it was mostly cause it happens at a point where you know the characters well enough and you understand. I mean it feels more than a sex scene.

As what i didn't like? I had problem with imagining some characteristics from the people in the book. I still don't know what age Lily is, i imagine something close to 25. And i barely have an idea on how everyone else, except the two main chars, looks. It was like i had ghosts at their roles because i couldn't create an image of them. And maybe that's small for some people but i just hate to not have images of what i read since i feel i can't understand the author's world well enough.

Do i recommend it? Yep yep! Get it! The first day i've read about 100 pages. Second i was really tired so i'm like "i will just go with 30 pages or so for today" and suddenly i was at the page 200 and i'm like "ok..what's one more chapter" and i'm page 250+ with just 20 pages left. Last page? "WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME? I NEED MORE OF IT. WHY IT ENDS LIKE THAT? I NEED TO KNOW!!". I guess that means i like it..right? :P

Title Thoughts: It really fits the book.

Cover Thoughts: I don't think there could be a more perfect cover. She's wearing the white dress. There is the lake and the blood moon. She has her long red hair and if you look closely you can see the mark on her arm.

WARNINGS: There is one sex scene. It is vague, but at the same time it isn't. Hm. It doesn't go overload with details.

I really enjoyed this book and I am definitely looking forward to the sequel. The writing was simple enough and flowed pretty smoothly. The only thing I would change would be that the writing seemed too simple. For example there could be a sentence like this: I whispered in a tone that would let her know exactly how I was feeling. I think it would have flowed better if it was something like: I whispered vehemently. Luckily, as the book progressed and I became more immersed with Makayra, it wasn't there anymore.

I loved learning about Makayra and the mark. I can't wait to read the sequel and learn even more about Lily's destiny. I enjoyed the relationship between Lily and Justin, although at times it seemed too fairytale like. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. There was also a few pleasant surprises at the end, which I'm excited to see what will become of them.

Addict's Last Words: The Blood Moon of Winter introduces an ordinary woman, who is a little anti-social, turned Goddess. We see Lily grow and fall in love. I was left wanting more of Makayra.

To Buy or To Borrow: No doubt that you will enjoy it. I just suggest you wait until close to the release of the second book, though.

Originally reviewed at Book of Secrets

The Blood Moon of Winter was very slow in the beginning. The prologue gave the reader a quick glimpse into a mystical world where everything was dying and they were in need of their Goddess to return to save their world.

Lilyana Makay is leading a pretty ordinary life. She has no social life and spends her free time either babysitting her twin niece and nephew or curled up with a good book. Her sister Taynia tries to set her up with eligible bachelors but Lily is just not interested in the dating scene. A chance meeting with one of her favorite authors opens up new feelings of love and longing that Lily has never felt before. Meeting and falling in love with Jason Caurns has left her confused as to whether or not she can leave him and her human life behind to help save the land of Makayra.

Lily’s dream-like altered states take her back to Makayra where her only contact is with a white panther named Sarwanell. It’s through him that she learns about the prophecy of the Flower Goddess and that she is the only one that can save the world of Makayra. Jason was the only human that Lily could confide in about her impending transition to the Goddess of Makayra. As crazy as the idea sounded to her it was through Jason’s caring and understanding that she was able to come to terms with her fate and begin to grasp the idea that her life as she knew it would soon come to an end. Both James and Lily seemed content in spending what little time they had to get to know each other better. Their hope was that once she transformed into the Goddess she would either be able to go back in forth between Makayra and earth or bring Jason over to Makayra to live with her

The book had a cliff-hanger ending. The author spent a lot of time in this book world building for this series. I am a little curious to see what happens in the next book with Lily and Jason and how Lily copes in her new role as Goddess.

The Blood Moon of Winter gets 3 out of 5 stars.

The Blood Moon of Winter is an original story of a woman who has an unknown destiny in a world she believes is only in her dreams. At the same time she is experiencing what may be true love for the first time in her life. Lilyana is used to living by herself with the comforts of her morning coffee and her favorite books. But the possibility of being a Goddess of a strange unknown land turns her life upside down.

The Blood Moon of Winter is an exceptionally unique paranormal story. An average, normal person waking one day to be a foretold savior of another world is such wildly different concept from the average book about vampires or werewolves.

Courtney Conant has a very different writing style then I am used to. For me the non-vital parts could have had less description of every last thing the characters were thinking and doing. Or at least had more actions to fill the description. The heroine seems to spend an awful lot of time thinking about why coffee cups need rinsing and such. Conversely, I completely lost myself in the scenes where the heroine finds herself in the fantasyland. The action scenes are quick page turners.

Also, the main characters seem to accept readily what normal people would assume is a crazy dream. The one person that Lilyana confides in accepts her story with very little convincing. This doesn’t seem realistic to me unless, of course, this comes into play as part of a future story.

For these two reasons, I gave The Blood Moon Of Winter 3 stars. Without them, it would easily have been 4 stars, possibly 5.

This book does have a superb cliffhanger that I didn’t see coming. With the promise of a sequel, it leaves you enthralled to find out what happens next.

Conclusion:
The Blood Moon of Winter is a fast read that is definitely worth checking out. With a suspenseful ending, I am eager to read more from this debut author.

Let me start by saying that for me, this book doesn't fit into the normal YA genre, purely because of the ages of the characters involved in the story. They don't fit into the normal age bracket that is generally featured in young adult books. There is also one sex scene, which while it isn't terribly graphic, it is there. So I would probably say that this is suitable for the higher aged teen and upwards!!

But all of that being said, The Blood Moon of Winter is an enjoyable read!! Some of the things I loved about it were...

THE COVER: It couldn't have fitted in better with the whole story. Absolutely perfect!! The Blood Moon, the dress, the hair, the tattoo, the lake!! A perfect representation of the story!!
LILYANA: She is a reader. A lover of books. And one of the quotes I loved most in the book was “I love books because they are easier than people.” There are days when I absolutely feel like that myself!!
JASON: Caring, protective, loving!! And he's an author!! What more could you want!!
THE ENDING: Wow!! What a fantastic lead in to the next book!!

On the downside, I found the speech between the characters to be a bit stilted. I felt it wasn't as free flowing as it should be when you're having a conversation with someone.

The plot and storyline keep you interested and the characters are all well rounded although I would have liked a little more background information for Lily's reluctance to date.

So, will I be reading more of this series? Definitely! The ending alone was enough to have me guessing as to what will happen next!!

3.75/5

The Blood Moon of Winter is an engaging story of a seemingly normal woman who wants nothing more in life than some quiet and a good book. Lilyana Makay soon discovers that she is destined for so much more and has little to no control over changes in her life that are coming, indefinitely. Simply put… a great story set in two different worlds, about a woman whose life is turned upside down and learns to deal with the changes that are thrust upon her.

On a much deeper side, being set in your ways, stagnant with your life is not always a great thing. Sometimes you need to embrace the changes in life that come your way and see the good in the changes. That's kind of what I feel with this story. It’s a scary thing to have your life turned upside down and have zero control in it, but sometimes it's a good thing. It makes you feel alive!

I’ve read books before that made me feel like I’ve read the same story over and over…only the names were changed. The Blood Moon of Winter is exceptional in that once I was finished reading it, I didn’t feel like I had read the story before.

I truly enjoyed reading this beautiful story and can’t wait to see what adventures are coming to Lilyana Makay, Goddess of Makayra!

My suggestion: Get this book, grab a glass of wine, kick back and enjoy the ride!

This is a story about Lily who is a single, avid book reader, and woman who is comfortable with who is is. The story starts out with her sister and brother-in-law trying to set her up. She is completely against it, she is more than okay with being single. Later that evening she is walking home and going through the park and meets a man, her favorite author, Jason. They greet each other and talk a little. Later in the week she goes to her sisters for the holidays and in walks in Jason. She decides after talking to him a little that she likes this man and can be friends with him. A fun relationship developes between them. That is when all the weird things start happening. Lily has been having some weird things happen to her like feelings of floating, people walking by her and no one is there, people talking and no one is there, and some very strange dreams. The dreams seem so real, that she feels they are real.
Go along on this great, magical story of Lily and Jason. It is a great story about learning to love and trust, and follow a destiny that you did not know existed.
This is a great story and can't wait for the next book in the series. This is a book that I will for sure recommend to others and will be eagerly awaiting the next book to come out.

Really good story, I really enjoyed reading the book. It was kind of slow at the begenning but as I kept reading it picked up and from that point on, the story was just great. The book is basically about Lylyana Makay, who just lives a simple life and is always reading a book. However, her world is about to change because she is destined to live a not so simple life. First, she meets Jason Caurns who is an author and she has read his books. At first, she doesn't want anything more then friendship but she does like him and he likes her to so one thing leads to another. She is happy with him but at the same time, there is another change happening to her she is starting to dream with a cat and of a land were she is supposed to be a Goddess and who can save the land of Makayra. Now she is torn between going to the land of Makayra or staying with Jason behind because once she goes to other land she can't return.
Now, I'm not going further otherwise I'm going to spoil the story. The end is just crazy I wasn't expecting that end but the book and the story is great and worth the time to sit and enjoy the book.

I found this book to have a different writing style then I am normally used to and found it to be refreshing. The ideas and elements put into the story line were new and original. This book will definitely have you turning pages to see what is happing next. The stories development through out the whole progression of the story, I found was as smooth as silk. Courtney Conant paints a gorgeous picture of a new land that I definitely would love to visit and a love interest that will have you falling in love with him. I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel. I would suggest you give this new author a try.

Courtney's debut novel the Blood Moon of Winter is a fast and fascinating read. She has a great way of developing her story smoothly as her main character, Lily is catapulted from this world into another one - one fully of fascinating characters and a heretofore unimagined destiny for the quite, bookish Lily.

It's imaginative, blending reality with fantasy with a deft hand. Very enjoyable read and I'll keep an eye out for Ms. Conant's next novel.

There were a few places where I would have loved to edit -- but that's the risk one takes when another writer reads a novel. :-)

Overall a fun read - I would recommend it.

Lily was just another average young woman but one bite suddenly changed her entire life.

After the incident, Lily has no idea when something mysterious appeared in her life. Even when she was taken to new world made and meet the guide. It had happened many times but I felt like she did not get connected to it. Her past even her memories never revealed about it. Once I was desperately looking forward to it. Not only about that stuff, one thing that make me wondered and knitted many questions such where this book would take me. Because I almost read more than 100 pages but found no great intrigue . Thanks to my big curiosity.

I was not that into Lily. But I enjoyed all chapter which told me about her relationship with her sibling, Taynia. I almost cried a tear when something changed between them. In the end of the book, Jason was another character that make me curios.

The Blood Moon of Winter is a quick and light reading. None of the words or phrases inside that made me confused. Although it's new for me and felt a little bit weird about the whole ideas in this book, I found it interesting. Before reading this book, what I kept in my mind about the goddess was only linked to the Greek myth. The process of becoming the goddess in this book also absorbed my attention. I liked the way Courtney created and determined her own way about it.

I was little bit sad when I was in the last page. I thought I would find the ending. I just knew that there will be the second book. I hope I can get the chance to read the next series of this book. I want to know what will happen to Lily, to her family and absolutely her favorite author.

Cover:
I never thought that Lily's tattoo would be drawn that way. I was thinking that it surrounded her body only so it could be hidden. I wish I could see Lilyana closer.

I'm a little more than half-way through and am enjoying the story very much. I have a few ideas on where the plot is leading and am looking forward to being surprised at the twists I know are coming...!
