I loved this book. The originality of the idea and the use of literary devices by the author to add to the atmosphere and imagery. The flow of events was well executed and overall a lovely book. I would recommend reading if you want a feel of the Caribbean while reading an interesting story and having a short book that is easy to understand. Fantastic!

A Cow Called Boy by C. Everard Palmer is such a fun, witty story. Set on the island of Jamaica, it begins at the start of the new school year. 10 year old Josh Mahon has spent the entire summer caring and training his bull calf which he named Boy. Now on the first day back out to school, Josh is late and Boy keeps following him. Josh feels bad to leave Boy alone and with Boy refusing to be left alone, Josh brings the bull calf to school. He leaves Boy to wait under the school house and goes to class. But Boy soon misses Josh and sets off to find him. Josh, full of tricks and very smart, passes Boy off as his holiday assignment, providing his teacher and class with a lively show and tell.

But with a cow at school (corrected:bull calf), things get a bit chaotic, leading to Josh being disciplined and Mrs. Mahon putting a 'For Sale' sign on Josh's beloved Boy. When Mr. Watson, a local shopkeeper, buys Boy, Josh organizes a demonstration with his friends to get Boy back. This leads to the involvement of most of the community, rallying on Josh's side.

Full of funny moments, Caribbean humour, and themes of friendship and loyalty, A Cow Called Boy, remains a Caribbean classic that will keep you engaged to the end.

I enjoyed revisiting this story.

Such a wholesome children’s story especially for beginner readers with simple sentences, vocabulary, descriptions and just enough literary devices to hook them. The dialogue also incorporated enough of the rural dialect used in Jamaica as well, which makes it an accessible piece of Caribbean children’s literature.
