बारामासी ... बारामासी का मतलब होता है सतत और यह किताब दुबे परिवार के सपने देखने, उनके टूटने और उन टूटे हुए सपनों के मलबों पर खड़े होकर फिर से नए सपने देखने की दास्तान है। बुंदेलखंड इलाके के अलीपुरा गांव की पृष्ठभूमि में लिखी गई इस कहानी के किरदार गुच्चन, छुट्टन, चंदू, लल्ला, बिन्नू, छादामी, भैयन मामा इत्यादि बेहद दिलचस्प हैं और काफी जाने पहचाने से लगते हैं। दुबे परिवार की व्यथा पर आपकी आंखों में आसूं तो आएंगे पर अगले ही पल छुट्टन के कहे गए किसी बात पर आप ठठा कर हंस पड़ेंगे।
भाषा धारदार है और क्षेत्रीय मुहावरों और लोकोक्तियों के प्रयोग से और शानदार हो गई है तथा अलीपुरा वासियों की अक्खड़ता का सटीक निरूपण करती है। जिस अंदाज में लेखक यह कहानी बयां करते हैं, बेहद दिलचस्प है तथा अंत तक बांधे रखती है। कुल मिलाकर एक 'बारामासी' छाप छोड़ती है यह किताब!❣️❣️

Gyan Chaturvedi's 'Alipura' is one such book that is going to remain etched in the memory of readers for a long time and is sure to get added to the list of best-books-ever-read. Originally published in Hindi in 1999 as Baramasi, Alipura is an English translation by Salim Yusufji. While I have not read the Hindi publication, the English version is brilliant as it has maintained the essence of the language and dialogues which are spoken in the local tone of the Bundelkhand region. It has that authenticity that instantly pulls the reader into the story and keeps them engaged. 


The story is set during the 1960s era in the Alipura village of Bundelkhand region of UP, where a Brahmin family of a widowed mother with 4 sons and 1 daughter are trying to float into their lives holding the rope of their dreams. This middle-class family with no earning member has a dream to get the daughter of the house married, the dream of sons to pass their intermediate exams, while the boys dream of miracles which will sail their boat through the exam without studying... Many such dreams form the underlying theme of this book. 


While the plot looks like a sad story, please be informed that this book is anything but that. The author's humorous writing style, engaging narration, funny dialogue deliveries, and satirical take on the lives, culture, thought process of the locals, social issues of the time, crimes, and society of the Bundelkhand region is a perfect portrayal of the real society that is prevalent to a great extent even today. What makes this book amazing is the brilliance in forming the characters which are so real that one can relate with them instantly. There is also an exceptional level of detail in everything. Be it using the word "daaktari" in dialogues, or calling a station "tesan", or just explaining a summer afternoon, everything is genuine and authentic. 


In a very humorous style, the author has also loudly highlighted the prevalent issues of the society of those times, most of which are present today as well. While the level of details provided in each of the scenes and paragraphs makes the story flow at a very slow pace, they are truly the backbone of this marvelous work of literature. There is no better way this book could have been written the way it has been written now. It's perfect from all angles. However, if one prefers a fast-paced book, chances are that you may lose patience while crossing just the first lane of the Alipura village and finding Dube Ji's house where a widowed mother is making preparations for welcoming the prospective bridegroom's family and daughter of the family Binno is feeling amazed at the transformation a little bit of 'cream-powder' can do to her looks. If you are picking this book, hold your patience and just enjoy the story and narration that comes from a brilliant author like Gyan Chaturvedi.

हिन्दी व्यंग्य उपन्यासों में बारामासी का अपना स्थान है । उत्तर भारतीय गॉंव और उनमें बसने वाले सपनों का अद्भुत किन्तु सटीक चित्रण करते हुए लेखक ने हमारी सामाजिक व्यवस्था तथा रुग्ण मानसिकता पर भी कटाक्ष किया है। इसके चरित्र आपको हर गॉंव में बड़ी आसानी से मिल जाएँगे - गुचचन, छुट्टन, मामा - सब बहुत ही विश्वसनीय चरित्र हैं । बारामासी पढ़ते हुए आप इन सब की व्यथाओं से हमदर्दी रखकर भी अपने आप को मुस्कुराने से नहीं रोक पाएँगे ।

Alipura by Gyan Chaturvedi, originally written in Hindi as Baramasi, is an English translation by Salim Yusufji. The book primarily tells the story of a family living in a village named Alipura, a district of Jhansi.

An omniscient narrator tells us the story of the family with its necessary background and sub-plots. The author has the wont of explaining all the scenes down to each miniscule detail. He won’t proceed forward until he has exhausted all the possible cases and scenarios relating to the setting or issue at hand and sometimes these go on to multiple pages making sure no point is left behind.

Set in the late 1960s, one can find patriarchy and orthodoxy deeply set in this novel with characters talking explicitly about it and passing harsh comments towards women, how they should behave, and how they should be handled.

इनके पहले उपन्यास 'नरकयात्रा' में व्यंग्य जबरदस्त था.. अस्पताल पर व्यंग्य, पेशे पर व्यंग्य और व्यवस्था पर व्यंग्य.. पर वहां बहुत बार अतिरेक था.. यहाँ समाज पर व्यंग्य है.. व्यंग्य लिखने की कोशिश में निर्मित किया गया व्यंग्य नहीं, वरन उस बुंदेलखंडी जीवन को बहुत नजदीक से, पैनी निगाहों से देखकर रोजमर्रा से निकला हुआ व्यंग्य... मूलतः यह कथा है, व्यंग्य नहीं; हंसाने का साधन-मात्र तो बिल्कुल नहीं... और कथा भी क्या खूब आगे बढ़ती है!

ये कहानी साधारण लोगों की ही है और उनकी साधारण ज़िन्दगियों में झांकने की कोशिश ही की गई है.. जो है और होता आया है, उसे पकड़ने की कोशिश है लेखक की; जो सही है उसकी न तरफदारी की गई है अपनी ओर से और न ही जो गलत है उसे कोसने का प्रयास ... वरन, जो गलत है उसी को उजागर करने में और कहने में तो व्यंग्य उत्पन्न हुआ है....उस समय की (साथ ही इस समय की... क्योंकि बहुत कुछ कहाँ ही बदला उस क्षेत्र में), उस क्षेत्र की तमाम कुरीतियों, समस्याओं, अंधविश्वासों, जड़ताओं, कूपमंडूकताओं की झलक एक बेहतरीन व्यंग्य भरे अंदाज में चरित्रित है...

एक माँ और उसके बच्चों की कहानी.. कहानी जिसमें सपने हैं- बुने हुए सपने, चुने हुए सपने... कोई सुखांत कहानी होती तो शायद किसी और मोड़ पर खत्म होती.. लेकिन यथार्थ में जीती कहानी तो यथार्थ पर समाप्त होती है ना- सुख या दुख के सरलीकृत बंटवारे में नहीं...

भाषा पर पकड़ जोरदार है.. मुहावरे और क्षेत्रीय शब्दावली का प्रयोग भी भाषा को और चुटीला और धारदार बनाते हैं..असल ज़िंदगी की तरह यहां भी गालियाँ हैं, भरपूर गालियाँ हैं.. लेखक शायद बच्चों की नैतिक शिक्षा की कहानी लिखना भी तो नहीं चाहते होंगे...

लेखक ने उपन्यास की भूमिका में इसके नामकरण के विषय में लिखा है ".... बारामासी ऐसा फूल है, जो हर मौसम में उसी शिद्दत से खिल सकता है। मेरे इस उपन्यास के पात्रों के जीवन-चरित्र को इससे बेहतर और किस नाम से पुकारा जा सकता था?"..... सच ही तो है!! आप पढ़ते हैं, मुस्कुराते हैं, ठहरते हैं, सोचते हैं.. ये तमाम पात्र जो कहीं से भी उदात्त नहीं हैं, आदर्श नहीं हैं, अंत में आप पर एक छाप छोड़ जाते हैं.. और छाप छोड़ जाता है लेखक, अपनी अगली रचना की ओर आपको खींचते हुए!!

Firstly, I am grateful that this book was translated in English, because there is no chance that I would have discovered it otherwise. There are so many literary treasures in India's diverse regional realms, and I hope that these are brought to the mainstream, to the English reading junta in the country, through well translated versions such as this one.
The translator really caught the tone of the dialogue well - I was re-translating everything back into Hindi in my head and realised this would be such fun to read in Hindi, which I plan to do too.

Full of satire, wit, irony and dark humour, the story takes us through the life of one family in Alipura and all the socio-cultural and political dynamics of Bundelkhandis that influence their lives and their quest for "making it" out of their miserable existence. Every character is so well defined, it was easy to picture exactly what they were like.

What I appreciate about the story is that it brought out the essence of what life in a 1960's central India village was like, so well. It is atmospheric, not just spatially, but so much through how things were said. Some dialogues and third person context descriptions are so well done - esp. in the first half of the book; many are 'laugh out loud' funny.

Read this book after going through rave reviews and i am not at all disappointed. Wit bordering on dark humour, it has a very earthy tone to it. Narak yatra by same authour should be read before reading this heady account.

A biting satire on the realtions amongst people, caste hierarchy, position of women in the society, rural life and so many other things. For those who enjoyed reading Rag Darbari of Srilal Shukl, this book will offer an indulgence in this sea of wit, sarcasm and dark humour. I had liked Narak Yatra by the same author, but this book fares much better. It's a must-read for the connoisseurs of Hindi Lit.

यह व्यंग्य कम, एक त्रासदी उपन्यास अधिक है। पूरा उपन्यास अत्यधिक दुखद और अवसादपूर्ण है।

बन्नो की शादी नहीं हो पाती है और वो अधेड़ हो जाती है। बाकि पत्र भी छोटी जगह की छोटी मानसिकता से घिरे हुए है। अगर कोई लड़का किसी लड़की को छेड़ दे , तो उसके भाइयो का ये कर्तव्य है की उस लड़के की मर्डर कर दे।

बुन्देलखंड के एक छोटे से गांव की कहानी है। पूरा उपन्यास बहुत डिप्रेसिंग है। पूरे उपन्यास में कोई भी सुखद घटना या सकारात्मक पात्र नहीं है।

I don't like these kind of dark and depressing novels no matter how critically acclaimed these are. I think this novel and Sh Gyan Chaturvedi is overrated. hence two stars.

छुट्टन इंटर तक पहुँच गए थे, जहाँ बड़े भाईसाहब अभी भी अटके हुए थे। छुट्टन और बिब्बो के प्रेम का केस भारतीय अदालतों में घिसट रहे लाखों मुकदमों की तरह खिंच रहा था, जो बेवजह चलते जाते हैं और जिनका परिणाम कुछ नहीं निकलता है। यह प्रेम भी ऐसा ही था। मिलने पर रोज नई तारीखें दे दी जातीं, जब वे फिर मिलते। परिणाम तो खैर क्या निकलता, पर प्रेम का यह केस मुवक्किलों को पूरा मजा दे रहा था। चंदू ने अलबत्ता प्रथम श्रेणी में इंटर कर डाली थी और आगे के कैरियर को लेकर बाकायदा चिंतित थे। उसी चिंता में वे प्रायः छोटे कमरे में बने पुस्तकालय में घुसे रहते थे, जहाँ अन्य बातों के अलावा वे झाँसी के स्टेशन से खरीदी गई अश्लील किताबों के उत्तेजक किल्ले पढ़कर, फिर आँखें बंद करके स्वयं को उन किस्सों के हीरो के स्थान पर रखकर, चिंता के बीच भी खासा आनंद प्राप्त करते रहते थे। बिन्नू ने प्राइवेट परीक्षाओं के रूप में इसी बीच इंटर पास कर लिया था तथा बी.ए. करने की सोच रही थीं। शादी होने की प्रतीक्षा में बिन्नू जैसी हजारों लड़कियाँ इधर बी.ए. कर रही थीं; प्रायः प्राइवेट परीक्षार्थी के रूप में, ताकि वे घर में चूल्हा-चक्की भी करती रहें, जो उनका प्रमुख कर्त्तव्य था। अधिकतर लड़कियों की शादी नहीं हो पा रही थी, सो साक्षरता का प्रतिशत लड़कियों में तेजी से बढ़ रहा था। भैयन मामा, बदस्तूर भारतीय रेल की छाती पर सवार होकर जब-तब झाँसी से अलीपुरा अभी भी आया-जाया करते थे। इन पाँच वर्षों में वे बिन्नू के लिए रिश्ते-ही-रिश्ते लाए थे और अब भी लाते जा रहे थे। घर में सभी लोग थक-से गए थे, पर भैयन मामा उसी उत्साह से रिश्ते लाते रहे थे। इसी बीच उनका दमा बिगड़ गया था, बवासीर का इलाज चल रहा था तथा पेट में वायुगोला की पुरानी शिकायत फिर जोर-शोर से उठ आई थी–परंतु उनकी देशाटन की आदत बदस्तूर थी तथा बीड़ी वे उसी शिद्दत से पिया करते थे। बीड़ी पीते हुए हँफते-कराहते, वे जब अलीपुरा आया करते, तो ऐसे लगते मानी कोई कोयले का पुराना रेलवे इंजिन अपनी लूप-लाइन पर यूँ ही चक्कर मार रहा हो। उन्हें अभी भी पूर्ण विश्वास था कि बिन्नू की शादी ऐसी शानदार जगह पर किसी इंजिन-ड्राइवर या गार्ड या स्टेशन-मास्टर से हो जाएगी, जहाँ पर वह राज करेंगी क्योंकि रेलवे में सभी राज करते हैं। छुट्टन की प्रायः इच्छा होती थी कि वे भैयन मामा से प्रार्थना करें कि यदि राज करने जैसी स्थिति न बन पा रही हो, तो ऐसे किसी घर में बिन्नू को ठिकाने लगवा दें, जहाँ दासी की तरह ही रहने को मिल जाए, पर वे इतने वाचाल होने के बावजूद यह कमीनी बात उनसे नहीं कह पाते थे।

अम्माँ ने कहा, ‘‘ अब क्या करना है चंदू का?” गुच्चन ने कहा, “सबकी राय यही बन रही है कि चंदू डाक्टरी पढ़ें।” “हम भी जेई कह रहे हैं।” “चंदू की भी बड़ी इच्छा है कि” “डाक्टरी की पढ़ाई बड़ी महँगी सुनते हैं?” “सो तो है जिज्जी पर कुछ न कुछ तो करेंगे।” “क्या करोगे भैया?” “खाल बेचकर भी पढ़ाना पड़ा, तो पढ़ाएँगे।” “हमाई- तुमाई खाल कौन खरीदेगा भैया? नहीं ऐसी अँधरसट्ट बातों से तो काम न चलेगा गुच्चन” “कहूँ से उधार भी मिल सकता तो” “भिखारिन की रिश्तेदारी भिखारिन में ही होती है” “सोना- चाँदी गिरवी रखें तों?” “इत्तो सोना- चाँदी नहीं छोड़ गए तुम्हारे बाप” “फिर चंदू को समझाते हैं कि इस चक्कर में न पड़ें” “ऐसी बात भूल के भी न कहियो बेटा चंदू अगर पढ़ें, तो हमें पढ़ाना ही है” देर तक चर्चा के बाद तय पाया गया कि गाँव जाकर खेती की एक चौथाई जमीन बेचनी पड़ेगी। यदि चंदू का डॉक्टरी में प्रवेश होता है तो उसके खर्चों के लिए यह तो करना ही होगा। आगे की देखी जाएगीयह कहकर आगे जिज्जी ने वह लोकप्रिय वाक्य कहा, जो आम हिंदुस्तानी को बड़े से बड़े दलिद्दर में भी जीवित रखता है। उन्होंने कहा कि “जिसने डाक्टरी में घुसाया, वही आगे भी कुछ इंतजाम करेगा।” ‘जिसने’ का मतलब ईश्वर ने। इस तरह ईश्वर को बीच में डालकर जिज्जी तथा गुच्चन दोनों का मन थोड़ा हल्का हुआ।

लल्ला एक दिन कुएँ में कूद गए। कुआँ घर में ही था, सो कूदने को दूर नहीं जाना पड़ा। कूदकर डूबे नहीं, क्योंकि डूबने के लिए कूदे भी नहीं थे। तैरते रहे। तैरकर जोर- जोर से कुछ चिल्लाते रहे, जो गहरे कुएँ की दीवारों से टकराकर ऐसा गूँजता रहा कि ऊपर कुएँ की जगत पर खड़े गुच्चन, अम्माँ, छुट्टन आदि कुछ भी समझ नहीं पा रहे थे। गुच्चन ऊपर से रस्सी लटकाकर लल्ला के सिर के पास गोल- गोल झुला रहे थे। लल्ला तैरते रहे। रस्सी उन्होंने नहीं पकड़ी। वे चिल्लाते रहे और तैरते रहे। उन्होंने प्रोटेस्ट के तौर पर कुएँ में छलाँग लगाई थी और प्रोटेस्ट जाहिर करने के लिए जरूरी था कि बचाव कार्य के लिए फेंकी रस्सी का सहारा न लिया जाए। “लल्ला, रस्सी पकड़ के ऊपर आ जाओ,” छुट्टन ने अपने मुँह को कुएँ के मुँह में घुसेड़ते हुए चिल्लाकर कहा। लल्ला ने नीचे से कहा, “हम न पकड़ेंगे अब हमारी लास ही बाहर आएगी।” मरने की धमकी देने के बावजूद वे तैरते रहे। “तुम बाहर आ जाओ फिर जैसा चाहोगे, वैसा कर लेंगे।” गुच्चन अपेक्षाकृत शांत थे। “बेटा बाहर आ जा,” अम्माँ विह्वल थीं। “हम बाहर न आएँगे,” लल्ला ने जोर से चिल्लाकर कहा और इस चक्कर में गोता खा गए।

Usually, in small places like Alipura, the pace of life tends to be sluggish, and even when you meet people after years, you'd notice little changes in them...Now, that's what didn't happen to the family this year.

'Alipura' is the story of a small Indian village in the state of Uttar Pradesh with a middle class Brahmin family at its epicenter. The story starts with the arrival of a marriage prospectus for the young and pretty 'Binoo' who is the sister of four brothers 'Guchchan' (who's devoted to Gods and divinity), Chhuttan (who's a Dharmendar fan and overly sarcastic), Chandu (who's always busy in studies) and Lalla (who's a bodybuilder). Her mother is a widow and is balancing the household with the little treasure she owns and meagre rent from tenants.

The way these boys live their life resembles many men in the Indian household who are good for nothing but are treated with extreme prestige due to their lineage, little accomplishments or because they are men. The author has described every little thing that happens in Alipura or villages like it in graphic details be it the scene of train stations, police stations, the roads, the hygiene of people, domestic abuse treated as casual affair, love affairs, gossips, summers, school and college examinations, dacoits, corruption, jails, marriages etc

The book is filled with funny anecdotes. Each character has their own story which intertwines with the lives of many people of their village making it an interesting read. The characters make you feel annoyed because of their mindset and you may feel extreme remorse for the two women of the house.The story Chaturvedi is narrating is actually a scenario of most Indian households be it of the past or present, be it of city or village. This is something not many would try to understand because the book has a lot of casteist remarks and male chauvinism which is intolerable in today's world, and cannot be gulped down as humour. But the moral is something the author leaves up-to the readers to grasp.

Baramasi was written in 1999 by Gyan Chaturvedi. After 21 years this book is translated by Salim Yusufji and published by juggernaut as Alipura and it still makes a rivetting read.

Village Alipura is located in Jhansi district. The Dube family that resides there is barely able to make ends meet. Jijji or amma as she is affectionately called, is a widow and has four sons and a daughter. They all have big aspirations from life , the most urgent being finding a suitable husband for Binno. Their bhaiyan mama helps them in this ordeal. The story is based in 1960s where it was unthinkable to marry your daughter outside caste or without a hefty dowry.

The hardships faced by Amma for having good for nothing sons is heartbreaking. The dark humour and satire with which the book is written keeps you going.

If you want a sneak peek into the Bundelkhand region of 60s - the atrocities faced by women, rampant casteism, political situation and the middle class dreams then don't miss this book. This book is an amazing way to revive a hindi classic and make the new generation aware of that era.

Gyan Chaturvedi's writing is so sharp that Baramasi is not only funny, it's laugh-out-loud funny with humour so stinging that it leaves you with a pang of restless contemplation, even though you're laughing on the outside. But despite this humourous tone, Baramasi is a through and through gloomy novel that's a satire on our society told through a bleak tale of a family which can't seem to catch a break from problems. This is not a typical story where characters find redemption and everything ends on a happily ever after note, instead Gyan Ji keeps its grasp on the arduous reality till the very last page. The story certainly takes an abrupt shift in the end, so hurried that it somewhat pulls you out of this meticulously crafted tale, but the writing is so strong, the universe is so realistic and alive, and observations so biting that you can't help but admire this book. BARAMASI is a must watch for the lovers of satire, which despite its difficult and sombre storyline, gives you a lot to think.

Set in the backdrop of Alipura in the Jhansi district of India, Alipura is a brilliantly translated version of the original Baramasi by Gyan Chaturvedi. Even though the English version lacks the flavour that the original must have had because of the language, it still easily manages to pass the muster because of its alluring narrative, use of local dialect as much as possible and use of satire through descriptions and words that spew black clouds of revulsion in our society.

मुझे यह कहानी बहुत पसंद आई । यह भारत के छोटे से गांव के एक परिवार की कहानी है । हर भारतीय इस कहानी में स्वयं को देख पाएगा । यह पुस्तक यूँ तो व्यंग्य की श्रेणी में आती है और मूलतः व्यंग्य ही है पर जो छुपी भावनाए और संदेश इस कहानी में बह रहे है , उन्होंने मुझे इस कहानी से जोड़ा । और जो समाज की असलियत दिखाई गई है वह भी प्रंशसा की पात्र है । जब मैंने यह पुस्तक पढ़ी, तो मानो सब मेरी आँखो के सामने ही हो रहा था, बल्कि एक चलचित्र से भी ज्यादा वास्तविक लगी यह कहानी ।

This is one of the funniest Hindi novel I have read till today. But as I was finishing it, it made me really sad. As it made me aware of my own reality, all the funny things got a sad flavour on them. But nevertheless great read! I will take this up again some day.
