Oh, I could write a sonnet
About your Easter bonnet,
And of the girl I'm taking to
The Easter Parade
celebrated composer Irving Berlin wrote "Easter Parade" over sixty years ago. Now his timeless song comes to life in this delightfully sunny picture book. Lisa McCue's warm, friendly art tells the simple story of a father and daughter bunny who set off for the Easter parade. Once on the avenue, they join throngs of other animals in a magical New York setting filled to the brim with flowers, balloons, and, of course, Easter bonnets! This book is the perfect way for the youngest readers to celebrate a beloved spring holiday. The music and lyrics to the original song are also included as a special bonus.

I was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to Tappan, NY when I was 4. As early as I can remember, teachers were telling me that my drawings should be in children’s books. While in high school I was given the assignment to write a paper describing a day in my life 25 years into the future. I described myself as married with 2 children, working in my studio overlooking the ocean and designing greeting cards with a dog at my feet. I must have had a crystal ball that day. The only difference is I look out at the Chesapeake Bay, not the ocean.

I illustrated my first children’s book while in college. Acclaimed Dutch author Loek Kessels saw my portfolio, and asked me to illustrate for her. Now nearly 30 years later, I am still illustrating children’s books as well as greeting cards.

I love my work! It is so much fun to bring my characters to life, one brush stroke at a time. My sons laugh at the way I act out all of the emotions by making the facial expressions of my characters while I draw. Click on my picture to the left to see what my sneaky boys caught on tape.

When I am not drawing you will most likely find me on the water racing our sailboat or in the Mountains skiing. I love to read, sew, and bead. I am also very involved in fundraising for ALS.

This is Irving Berlin's "Easter Parade" song set to illustrations by Lisa McCue. It is perhaps nothing remarkable but I am already a fan of the song and of McCue's adorable animals illustrations so I was the perfect audience for this sweet little PB. The assortment of animals dressed up in their Easter best, the cute setting (the town is mostly made in tree trunks of the forest) and the sweet father-daughter connection (it's from the daddy rabbit's perspective ) made me smile and warmed my heart.

This book has cute illustrations. The text is the song lyrics by Irving Berlin. Without music playing, the text is boring and falls flat.

I read this as regular text first, which does not work well at all. So I checked out the song on YouTube. It sounds vaguely familiar, in the way of old tunes that have been played in public settings to the point of turning into background noise. Regrettably, the lyrics and tune don't speak to me.

The illustrations are quite sweet, festive, and adorable. I imagine this book would be popular with little kids who like to get fancy for a special occasion. I know a mom and daughter who will probably love this, as they enjoy dressing up and singing old tunes and looking at cute little animals. I will recommend the book to them, but for me this was not a hit.

I listened to the song first, so the text worked. But I have to be honest; I'm just not a fan of celebrating Christians' most sacred holiday by dressing up in gewgaws, or of animals in clothes, or of the mocking way the other couples were portrayed. The love the daddy has for his little girl is wonderful, though.

Judge for yourself: check it out on openlibrary.

Zoe loves the song and enjoys the illustrations as well. I think the pictures are wonderful to look at again and again and absolutely adorable. This is one we both enjoy.

The pictures are cute and I suppose I learned what a rotogravure is, but the kids were unimpressed.

Easter Parade is actually a melody, but was put into the form of a children's book for Easter. Their are lyrics at the end of the book that the children would probably enjoy to sing along with after the book has been read initially. This would be a great book just in time for Easter.
