This book portrays a growing pattern (by one animal per each group). A child wonders why all the animals are running past him, as he sees one cow go running by, then two horses, three donkeys, and so on, until the humorous end when he realizes why all the animals are running away (from a monster!). The pictures have clear images of the animals, along with numbers in the corner, to help children make connections between objects and symbolic numbers.

Connections to "big ideas" in math:
-Patterns are sequences governed by a rule.
-Identifying the rules of a pattern brings predictability and allows us to make generalizations.

Ideas for teaching:
-Children could glue groups of characters to a large sheet of paper, with a column representing each animal type, to visualize the growing pattern by one animal.

Considerations for use with dual-language learners (DLLs) or students with special needs:
In Spanish (and other languages), the “sounds” of animals are different (for example, a horse says “jiii jii” and not “neigh”). Still, I think that animals, a topic children are well familiar with, will be accessible for most children.
