Devon Delaney Should Totally Know Better

Rate this book
Devon Delaney cannot believe she's lying again. But the thing is, she couldn't help it. Her new boyfriend, Luke, is talking to his (gorgeous) ex-girlfriend, Bailey Barelli (!!!), every single day in mock trial. Devon couldn't just stand by and let him find out that she'd never dated anyone else before. Could she? Oopsie. Too late now. To show how totally unaffected she is by Bailey's obvious Luke hang-up, Devon invents a fake ex-boyfriend of her Greg. Fab! What could go wrong? But it isn't long before Devon finds herself in the middle of another supergigantic lie. Can Devon come clean in time to keep the guy? Or will she lose everything due to another lie?

Summary:
The main character in this book is Devon Delaney. She has a boyfriend, Luke, and he has an ex-girlfriend, Bailey. Luke recently has started talking to Bailey. Luke and Bailey pass notes in class and they text each other. Obviously, this behavior bothers Devon very much. Devon becomes very jealous, and wants them to stop getting so close. Devon overheard Bailey talking to her best friend, Kim, about how Bailey was going to get Luke back and away from Devon because Bailey still liked him. Bailey is very pretty, and so Devon becomes self conscious and even more jealous. The conflict of this story, or the problem, is Bailey because she is trying to steal Devon's boyfriend away from her.

This whole story is about how Devon tries to make Luke jealous with her fake ex, Ryan/Greg/Corbin/Ethan/other names he went by. Devon does this so Luke will realize how Devon feels about him and Bailey, so they can figure things out. Devon even joined Mock Trial to spy on Bailey and Luke because she was very insecure. Devon wants to feel secure about their relationship and she wants Luke to make her feel secure. Instead of telling Luke the truth and confronting him, she devises a whole plan that becomes a recipe for disaster. Ryan not only helped out Devon, he also helped out her friend, Mel, from going to boarding school. He was quite the actor! Ryan pretended to still like Devon, which messed up the situation even further because Bailey pointed it out which made Luke jealous and feel insecure. Luke started trying harder to impress Devon, now that there was competition, and everything got even more tangled up. They were all students in middle school that were in the middle of drama whether they liked it or not.
I can connect to this book because I used to go to middle school, and there was a lot of drama concerning relationships. History does repeat itself because almost the same thing happened with my cousin. My cousin was jealous of her boyfriend's relationship with his ex, so she came up with a fake ex to make her boyfriend jealous. Instead of getting a different person from a different school, she got someone that went to their school and paid him to act like her ex. It was more disastrous than the book, and I was the friend that kept telling my cousin to tell the truth. This book was realistic fiction because I've seen it happen.

Explanation of Review:
I gave this book four start because I really liked the storyline because it was enrapturing. I didn't know what was going to go wrong next. It was fun reading it because it reminded me of my middle school experience. It also reminded me of how ridiculous it all was when looking back on my middle school life because I went to great extents to hide the truth, even though in the end it would have been much easier if I had just told the truth. I didn't like this book because it was about students in middle school, and they were acting a bit like students from high school, and they weren't acting their age. Being a high school, I didn't like reading about students in middle school. I like reading books about people my age because it is easier to relate to the story, and the experience of reading the book is much more enjoyable if you're living through it now than if you already went through it. I liked this book because I like reading about drama but not being caught in the middle of it, so it was a breath of fresh air because every single dramatic thing that has occurred in my family or friends, I was caught in the smack dab middle of it. It felt nice reading about someone else being in the position.

The most important quote from the book is: "And before I know it, this is what I'm saying: "Well, actually, I didn't four-wheel at my grandma's house. I mean, I did it over the summer while I was visiting her. But the actual four-wheeling I did was at this guy Greg's house. My ex-boyfriend, Greg." This quote is really important because this is the first lie she says to get her current boyfriend jealous.

I recommend this book to anyone that wants to read about typical middle school drama involving ex's and current boyfriends/girlfriends dilemmas.

Do you ever get days when you remember your high school or teenage days and you think to yourself, thank God it's over? I do.

Devon Delaney has a bad habit of lying. Does that make her a bad person? No, not really. She lies her way to the A-list table, makes up a fake boyfriend (first book) and a fake ex-boyfriend (second book, which is funny because now she's had more fake boyfriends than real ones) just so she can fit in the popular crowd. I am not trying to justify her actions but I do understand her enough to care for her.

By the second book, I felt like smacking Devon (or Devi, as her cool friends call her) in the head and asking her, haven't you had enough of the lies? But Devon had the support of her two BFFs in the sequel, something she kinda screwed up with in the first book.

I loved the first book. I have fond memories of reading it around 7 years ago (which is why it looks battered -- see below) and enjoying it so much. It was one of the few books that my non-reader sisters also read so that's a plus. Devon was a really funny protagonist, albeit frustrating because I'm pretty sure she could've gotten out of her predicament faster if she just tried to be more honest. But she was funny and kind. The book also has a tear-jerking moment that involved Devon and her even funnier sister, Katie. Luke, on the other hand, provided the sweet moments in the book. I liked him a lot; I even listed him down as one of the best book boyfriends out there.

How did the sequel fare? I was annoyed that Devon still hasn't learned her lesson but to be fare, the story took place only two weeks after the first book so her relationship with Luke was still pretty new and thus, not yet strong. Devon now has two BFFs who are really nothing like her (one's dorky, one's A-list cool) but they're a solid trio. Devon has a good boyfriend (although really, note-passing with your ex is not the way to go, Luke) and parents that are slowly being more open to changes in Devon's life (a.k.a growing up). The problem really lies in Devon's insecurity and paranoia. If she just asked, then she wouldn't assume. If she didn't assume, then she wouldn't be paranoid. If she weren't paranoid, none of the problems she faced wouldn't have happened and she wouldn't stressed over nothing. But she did learn her lesson this time, and I don't see a third book in the horizon.

It makes up for a good story but when I think about it, man, I'm so glad I'm older. There's this freedom that comes along with adulthood. For one, you don't spend a lot of time fitting in and you're more comfortable with who you are and who you've become.

I'm getting side-tracked here... But hey, should you be in need of something light and quick, the two-part Devon Delaney series is a good choice. It's funny and cute and you can leave your brains at the door. Perfect for a weekend afternoon.

This book is about a girl named Devon Delaney and how she tries to make her boyfriend, Luke, jealous. Devon gets jealous that Luke and his ex-girlfriend, Bailey, are getting closer. Then, she overheard Bailey talking to a girl named Kim and saying that she wants to get Luke back. To continue, Devon gets so envious that she even go to the extent of joining mock trial just to make sure that Luke and Bailey aren't together. Furthermore, lies to Luke that she had many ex-boyfriends and that none of them named Ryan still like her. Bailey adds her "two-sense" into the situations, making Luke try even harder to impress Devon. Lie after lie, Devon's and Luke's relationship was all jumbled up. I think the moral of the story is to not lie, and if you make a mistake, acknowledge the fact that you did.

Devon Delaney has a problem. She has a MAJOR issue, and that is lying-to-all-her-friends-about-anything-boyfriend-related. Also, she is SUPER protective of her boyfriend, and while she says she wants to be mature about letting him have girl friends in his life, she so doesn't trust any of them. Yes, she's a middle-schooler, but honestly? I feel like she needs to avoid this boyfriend drama and get her own issues sorted out first.
Thankfully, she finally came clean, and miraculously, the ending was happy. I totally thought Luke should let her go (gently, of course, not dumping her - she doesn't deserve that, as confused and conflicted as she might be), and let her be her own person for a while.
Anyway, this book was basically the same as the first one, only now I'm convinced that I would not Devon in my life - she tends to create drama where drama does not exist.

Devon Delaney has a problem, she constantly feels the need to lie. Each lie must be covered by another until things eventually backfire. Devon has done it once again. She has a boyfriend named Luke. Luke's old girlfriend Bailey wants him back and will do whatever it takes to win. Devon is jealous and trying to keep up with Bailey so she creates a former ex-boyfriend. Now Bailey insists on meeting him. Devon's world of lies comes crashing down as you can expect. I loved this book. The lesson to be learned regarding the truth is for everyone. I read part of this aloud to my class and the students started telling of times they had done similar things. I will definitely recommend this book

This book was awesome! I agree with most readers that Devon should know not to lie, from last time. She didn't learn her lesson, but I kind of understand her. Sometimes it's scary to ask for the truth. You don't exactly know what's the truth. You don't know when someone is lying to you, you never know when your trust is shattered from that experience. I thought it was cool of how Devon helped Mel out of private school, with the presentation. They should have done that from the start instead of lying. Lying can turn things into a mess instead of making things better. You have to know when t lie and when to tell the truth.

This book I would recommend to anyone out there who is having trouble with their life of being a teen. Devon Delaney really gets jealous when her boyfriends ex is the new "thing" in school. Lexi her best friend is still there to support her.Friends are the only thing you need when you are going through a situation like that.

I read the first Devon Delaney book when I was her age and I loved it. Now I've read the second book and I'm almost seventeen. Honestly it wasn't as good when I was more mature. But still it was nice and nostalgic. It was a nice light read with lovable characters. Greg/Ryan/Corbin/Ethan was really cool and funny, too. Give him a chance and you'll end up loving him.

it was pretty good. I kinda liked it but it was kind of the same as the last one. she lies and makes a mistake and then everything gets really bad and then in the end its all back to normal. Again, it was okay but not the best.

In book 2, Devon Delaney Should Totally Know Better, we enter the story about two weeks after the end of book one. She has a boyfriend named Luke, two best friends, and everybody has forgiven her for all the lies she told.

There is one big problem ... almost immediately she starts lying again!

I know she is young and everything is new to her -- she has never had a boyfriend before. But almost immediately after being forgiven by the boy she finds herself jealous of another girl, and lying about a past boyfriend. Now everyone either wants to meet him or must help her cover her lie with more lies.

I wanted Devon to have new issues to deal with. I wanted the book to focus more on what it is like for a young girl with a first boyfriend. I wanted it to delve into the messiness of friendships in adolescence. It did those things a little, but focused more heavily on the antics in her life that were all attributable to her lies. So, this one wasn't as successful as the first for me.

3.5- I read the first book back in middle school but never got around to the sequel until now. It was a light fun read, and a nice distraction from the heavier books I’m reading.

The book felt a little dated, but it was a fun and cheesy middle-grade story. :) I finished in just a few days, and I really liked it. It was a really good follow-up to the first book.

Here Devon goes Again! Greg? Really!? That name for her fake boyfriend sounds like the name of a Grandpa! LOL! This book was so amazingly cute though (and by cute I mean the cute boy Luke!) Luke is just so amazing because he is totes there for Devon. He also tells her how much he likes her not Bailey. I'm like Awww! I also love the inseparable trio of Lexi, Mel, and Dev. They are just such a perfect group of three! I hope this situation happens to me in 8th grade this year! So many beautiful and horrible things happened to "Devi" but she knew to become herself because everyone loves her just the way she is!

this book might be written for a middle grade audience, but it still goes hard after all these years!! it’s amazing to see how much Devon’s wit has impacted my own inner voice growing up and my well-loved paperback will always have a place on my shelf. the details of the narrative really make it fun and comforting, like a plate of fresh baked cookies after the worst day ever. and on this re-read, the scene where the girls help Mel successfully ask out her crush and then scream about it made me teary, along with the ending’s “‘It’s just me.’ And finally that’s enough.” Something something reconnecting with my girlhood to remember who I am and this book is an excellent one for that.

Since I have read the book that comes before this in the series about Devon Delaney I can't wait to read this book as soon as I can get it!!

1/8/11

Devon has made up another lie that she made up in a sticky situation!!!!!

I highly reccomend this book, however you should read the book that comes before it, The Secret Identity of Devon Delaney. (The Parker library has it.)

I finished the ebook last night and I loved it!!!! At the end, Devon told the truth to her boyfriend and everything was OK.

Ack. Apparently thought I had read this before but actually no way I finished last time. Because this time I literally threw the book on the floor and quit for the night because I could smell a plot twist that I knew was going to make me want to kill the narrator. Of course, it's ditzy middle-grade, and that's acceptable and even positive, and I actually realized I can teach some great discussion stuff out of this book. And it's also a nice break from six months of GRRM.

Another exciting book by Lauren Barnholdt. Readers get to continue the gripping story of Devon as she grapples with insecurities, boys, and growing up. The author does a great job of making sure each chapter ends with a mild cliff so readers want to keep going. Characters are distinct and never act out of turn. With humor and situational comedy this book is a fun read for anyone.

To me, this one was better than the first edition of the books! I was mad that Luke was flirting with Bailey! Devon totally deserves him because of all the drama she had to go through. This time, I'm not going to give out any spoilers, you need to read it to find out my lovelies. :)

Better than those Candy Apple books I used to read in sixth grade. Found this in seventh, on a Justice for Girls (the clothing store) shelf, so you can tell the demographic. Probably satisfactory for those 12-14.
