If you’re learning Italian and you’re looking for an easy reader, the Imparare Leggendo series by Cideb is for you. They provide novellas with four levels of language difficulty to choose from. “Amore e Cinema” is only at level two, but I still felt the need to have my trusty iPhone (with an Italian/English dictionary app) close by my side. Yet I didn’t have to use it all that often, at least not enough to take me out of the story.
I was surprised to find a nice little intriguing tale to help pull me through process of reading my first Italian novella (intermediate level). Filippo is a young aspiring director who works as a flunky for the small TV station based in Sardinia. He’s in love with the co-anchor of the morning show, Eleonora, who unfortunately has also has caught the eye of the jealous and demanding station owner, De Maffeis.
Filippo begins to date Elenora while at the same time casting her in his first film, to be shot utilizing the station resources without permission from De Maffeis. Upon finding out about the affair and the unauthorized project, the nefarious owner will stop at nothing to get ruin the film and lives of all involved.
It’s a cute read and reminded me of the books I read back in middle school. Made me feel like a pre-teen again, which ain’t such an easy thing do these days.
Like most easy readers, the plot is a little thin, but it was helpful for learning Italian and also for picking up terms related to the film world that aren’t covered in general textbooks. Better than most books of this type.
Although there are a lot of new vocabs, the language level is just right that reading and ignoring all the foreign words are possible. Definitely a nice little love story that is suitable for Italian learners of all ages, with enough intrigues, enough fuel and a just right happy ending.
Okay, so it was a good book when it comes to learning Italian. I feel like even though I am not good at Italian, I was able to understand the main points. The story was a little to clean, in the way that nothing went wrong for an extended period of time without being cleared up ten-fold, which I found annoying. I was able to use it to practice reading comprehension and pronunciation for class though. All in all could be a lot worse, my tutor and I had a fun time with it.
