This volume offers a brand-new "sketching to plan" tin can crammed full of sketching fundamentals for you to use when creating your own manga, as well as suggestions and ideas to help your artwork improve. This book is a brilliantly condensed can of artwork, jam-packed with a wide range of styles, ranging from renditions that are realistic without being slavishly naturalisitc to stylized "abstracted" and "exxagerated" renditions.
Born in Tokyo in 1961, Hikaru Hayashi started his activity as a manga artist after graduating from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Tokyo Metropolitan University. After working as an assistant, he made his professional debut with the manga Story of Aja Kong, then went on to found the manga and design agency Go office in 1997. Since then he has created more than 250 manuals on drawing manga, many of which have been successful internationally.
If you're new to drawing and admire the artists of the east, this is a good place to start. What I find with many "how to draw manga" books is that they're either too general or too specific. The author walks you through the basics of figure drawing to the point where you can get a basic grasp on the drawing technique. This is a good beginner's manual. Unfortunately, the book is no longer in print, and the only place you'll legally obtain copies is from online sellers, and any copy you'll find will likely be at least $65, more than a 100% markup of its $25 retail price tag. Happy hunting!
