The religious home education equivalent of a starting school picture book. A busy six-year-old kangaroo asks a lot of questions and her mother says it’s time to start their own school at home. Together they begin writing lessons with chalk in their driveway and Mrs Kangaroo praises her daughter’s ‘Can do’ attitude. Together they discuss how ‘God wants us to know all about the interesting people, animals and things He created’, and experiment in the sandpit to discover why kangaroos have tails, before heading off to a homeschool picnic day. The book is by an American author but the kangaroo characters may have special appeal to Australian home educating children. The drawings are attractive and, with clear open type, the book can double as a learning to read book although there are more words to a page than in I Am Learning All The Time.
Home Ed. Style: School at home with a biblical focus.
Portrayal: Positive.
Target Age: A picture book for young children
Conclusion: Frequent references to God and the Bible limit this book’s appeal to the religious home education sector.
