About the author

Todd McFarlane is a Canadian comic book artist, writer, toy manufacturer/designer, and media entrepreneur who is best known as the creator of the epic occult fantasy series Spawn.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. Spawn was one of America's most popular heroes in the 1990's and encouraged a trend in creator-owned comic book properties.

In recent years, McFarlane has illustrated comic books less often, focusing on entrepreneurial efforts, such as McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, a film and animation studio.

In September, 2006, it was announced that McFarlane will be the Art Director of the newly formed 38 Studios, formerly Green Monster Games, founded by Curt Schilling.

McFarlane used to be co-owner of National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers but sold his shares to Daryl Katz. He's also a high-profile collector of history-making baseballs.

Series is still far above average and I'm just loving re-reading it after 20+ years, but main storyline is still meandering and I don't like how McFarlane changed Spawn's original killer to make it more similar to the movie version.

Okay so the beginning was good but I swear the story is getting more and more confusing. So Chapel didn’t go after Al? It was a woman? Then what was the point of Spawn going after Chapel? And troubles are not over for the Fitzgerald family. Now the neighbors are shunning them too because of all Wynn is putting them through. And I’m not understanding what’s going on with Angela and Spawn. So some lightning is causing them to disintegrate or something? I’ll give the next issue a shot.

How much inner monologue and explaining every single detail in emotions and feelings can one comic have? Also, reading these in bulk it feels like those US tv-shows where there is a recap after every single ad break.
But still, there are good moments here and there, so this was not all annoying.

The quality keeps up here. Spawn taking on a military base led by man-in-the-chair Terry is my highlight of these issues. It’s great fun, it’s a development of the story, and Spawn running shoot-em-up missions is what you start reading Spawn for.

Forsberg/Khan story is patently McFarlane but it fits here. Doesn’t add a ton and doesn’t make a ton of sense but for the story being told through Forsberg, it works.

Oh yeah, Cy-Gor, who was introduced and teased multiple times 15 chapters ago. About time he shows up, and like every other freakshow, Cy-Gor bears some personal tie to Al.

The ending is hype tbh. Violator is finally making real moves and Spawn in preparing for a raid on Rat City. I’m excited to see where this is headed.

Slower forward story progression in this 10th volume collection of the always amazing Spawn series. Capullo's art still shines with crisp, deliberate stylization, alongside a more subdued collection of stories rehashing already known Spawn lore. My least favorite collection to date of the run that has nearly been 5 stars all the way up to this 5 issue streak.

Cy-Gor finally shows up to fight Spawn after being teased for about 20 issues and it's over in a few pages. What a let down. Then Cyan gets kidnapped when Wynn finds out what Terry has been up to. I will be so freaking glad when this plot is finally resolved. This plot has been milked since the beginning of the series. It's way past time for Wynn to go and move onto something else.

I love this ending: they keep it on the ball, major cliffhangers at the end.

I'm 1/2 through the origins volumes I already own from Humble Bundle, and I'm hoping to get through the rest before my birthday. The storyline feels like it's getting a little tighter to me, a little more focused, and I'm loving it.

Some old characters I love came back and I'm hoping they play a role in volume 11, which I'm starting now.

Still a meandering storyline, but the art is superb! Also, some continuity problems with characters and storyline events that would be nicely fleshed out if the tie-in books were included in this volume.

It took 40+ issues but Spawn has finally gotten good, all the little stories have finally tied together and the main storyline feels likes it's quickly advancing.

The main story, with Wanda, Terry, Wynn, etc, is starting to drag (like hell). Curious if MacFarlane had any idea where this story will end.

The Clown kidnaps Cyan but Spawn gets her back just as quickly. Angela visits for a minute and Al gets his face back. A mixed bag setting up future storylines. Capullo has some inspired pages.

Unfortunately, kinda boring. The art is still good. So much telling, instead of showing. Everything is over narrated in the most purple language to sound overly profound, but it's just more annoying.

Spawn is attacked by Cy-Gor, but easily wins the fight. Forsberg reveals that the consciousness of a soldier friend of his was used as the human half for the procedure that created Cy-Gor.

Eddie and Andy are the two brothers who were beaten by their policeman father when Spawn arrived on their doorstep. The whole thing ended with Eddie killing his father. A new encounter with Spawn results in more death and the loss of the rest of their innocence.

The Clown kidnaps Cyan while posing as Spawn. Terry and Wanda report it to the police who descend on Spawn's location. Cog stops Spawn from acting harshly. With a proper plan in mind, Spawn finds Cyan and fights Clown for her. He can't do anything about Wynn if he wants Terry's family safe. They are on Wynn's list of dangerous people. If Wynn dies, they are marked for death too.

Spawn becomes awesome exponentially. I do worry, though, that this series will fall into the trap of perpetual character struggles and building up to a future apocalypse without ever getting there in an effort to draw out the series (kind of like this sentence). Regardless, my favorite is his relationship with the family and his general badassery.
