This book is about a man who just wants a regular life, but despite that wish, he gets everything that is possibly not normal. If you had the option to save the world despite yourself surely dying would you still partake in it? Gideon Biddle is just a normal man who wants to complete school and have a normal life, so of course, he got the opposite of that. His closest friends support him on this journey, but the rest of the middling community believes him to be mad for doing this task. One of the good things about this book is all the odds were on the side of the Ambient winning, but despite that Gideon Biddle still comes up on the winning end. The Ambient wants nothing more than to tear the Rift and watch the world fall, but Gideon has different ideas. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of twisted fantasy in their books. I give this book five stars because it has every element about a book included that I enjoy with other values that I can consider existential.

The sequel was even better than the original! Gideon reunites with all the characters from the first book (including one who died in the original). Gideon has lost his normal magical ability but somehow has use of wild magic. Unfortunately, the human body was not designed to use wild magic and every time he uses it his body is damaged a little more. Gideon has to rely on sporadic use of wild magic and try to stop an Ambient invasion threatening both the Midlands and the Commonlands. This is a must-read!

A great sequel. I really like the way she ends her books intended to be a series. I would certainly like to read more from this author. She keeps the suspense going yet gets you some relief which makes it a fun read.
