Five travellers meet on a a teacher, a technologist, an educational researcher and two children. As they travel across the continent towards the Future of Learning conference, they exchange their stories. This book explores the ways in which new technology can support storytelling skills in learners. Written in the form of discussions between teachers, learners and researchers, it is an accessible introduction to issues in educational storytelling and technology. "This is the perfect introduction to the possibilities of narrative learning...I warmly recommend Inside A Narrative Journey to creative educators of every variety." Dr Donald Smith, Director of the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
'Inside Stories - a narrative journey' by Robertson, Gjedde, Aylet, Luckin and Brna tells the story of a train journey of a group or people en route to a conference. The group includes an academic, a couple of teachers, two children and an expert in ICT; as they travel they explore the role of story in education and (in the second half) how modern technologies can facilitate story-ing.
The book is a good survey on current thinking on the importance of narrative in teaching and learning. The second half, which concentrates on the modern technologies has (either interestingly or unfortunately, depending on your perspective) aged rather quickly with its references to the strange phenomenon of 'Facebook' and other social media.
My main criticism is, however, that the index is poor. This means that the book is of limited use to all but those dedicated to storytelling in education.
