My father fought in World War II and this fighter plane was his favorite. He told stories of P-38s flying close-support missions as he and his men fought through South Pacific jungles. This book is a photo-intensive overview of the P-38 aircraft from its inception to the multiple roles it played near the end of the war. There's also a detailed look at the struggle to find out why so many pilots crashed in the plane when it first came out and how those problems were overcome. Some of the material presented made me raise an eyebrow now and then as it's not consistent with what I'd read about the plane elsewhere, but this is a good book for aviation buffs nonetheless.
