The year is 2066. Orbiting high above the Earth is a space platform which has been used to construct a giant space ship. The ship, which is to make the first manned exploration of the outer planets, is almost ready for launch. You are one of the technicians working round the clock to complete the final checks on the ship. Two hours into the night shift of August 24th, news reaches you that nuclear war has begun on Earth. Those aboard the ship decide to launch it into space. There is only one aboard with the knowledge to run the ship - a talking computer, called Hastings.

This was a real blast from the past. I spent many hours in my childhood and early teens having frustrating adventures using a choose-your-own-adventure book.

This book has a rather bleak setting, with the Earth seemingly destroyed by nuclear war. Your only hope is the ships computer, which is rather reminiscent of Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The story is rather trippy in places as you struggle to know what is real and what is in your imagination.

I was lucky to find the correct path through the book on my second attempt, after which I enjoyed reading the different routes to the demise of the lonely technician.

I enjoyed this more from nostalgia than the story or the adventure, 3 1/2 stars.
