"It seems extraordinary that any educational system should consciously set out to prevent children from taking control of their lives and from making their own decisions, should force them to obey 'out of an unthinking respect for authority or fear of penalties.' ... How can it not be obvious that children and young people must be allowed to live their lives with dignity, to base their conduct on a rational understanding of why a given type of behaviour is desirable, to overrule adults when the adults are mistaken?"
