I'm not always the biggest fan of essay collections, but two authors in particular, TJ Jackson Lears and the late Warren Susman make this a must read. Susman's work in particular had a profound influence on me and my dissertation, though this particular essay, "Did Success Spoil the US?" wasn't as important to my work. Even so, the big question: what happened after World War II? With seemingly no world peer, a soon to be thriving economy why did the 1950s become associated with repression and labeled by many as the Age of Anxiety? As I go through this old comps list very few books have made me want to revisit them, but this one does. Maybe a summer read :-)
