The memoir of Australian former diplomat Richard Broinowski DRIVEN is a memoir by distinguished Australian former diplomat Richard Broinowski, with a particular focus on the cars he has loved and driven in Australia and his various postings in Asia, the Middle East, and North and Central America. this makes for an entertaining way of looking at various cultures (their driving behaviour, traffic conditions and road rules) and his career as an Australian ambassador. Part offbeat travel book, part career memoir, it is an engaging and personal look at one man's life and enduring loves. Perfect reading for car nostalgia buffs and lovers of travel books and biographies alike.
A very interesting and entertaining read, the memoirs of an Australian diplomat and former ambassador who intersperses regional history and insights into Australian foreign policy (in locations such as Iran, Japan, Burma, Vietnam, South Korea and Mexico) with his experiences as a car lover.
The book is definetlly intended for a very limited audience, car lovers with an interest in Australian diplomacy. If your interest lies in just one of those camps, I'm sure you would find yourself bored to tears for half of the novel - for me though the novels unique niche was a brilliant read.
Loved this book. Can completely relate to it. It was not only interesting to read about the life style of a diplomat but to understand he is just a regular human being with a love of cars (and i don't necessarily mean expensive cars), ambitions and a lust for life just like everyone else. Focusing on the cars he owned and how he went on road trips with them makes his *auto*biograohy become an interesting read for almost anyone who has owned a car. Light and entertaining read, hard to put down, and a fun insight into the life of a diplomat.
