SMOOCH!

When Mugi and Yuu miss the last train home after a late night out, a friendly restaurant proprietor, Tetsu-san, invites them in from the cold. Impressed by Mugi’s passion for cooking, Tetsu offers him a job . . . which is how Mugi comes to meet the gorgeous eighteen-year-old Aoi-san, a wandering artist (and kissing machine) who is deeply in love with Tetsu. Unfortunately, Tetsu isn’t interested, but hey . . . a kissing machine’s gotta kiss somebody, right? It turns out that nobody is safe from Aoi-san’s smooches, not Tetsu, not Mugi . . . not even the unsuspecting Yuu-chan!

I am sure that someday Yuu will find out how Mugi's feels, but not today. This poor guy gets in so much trouble with girls and I feel a little sorry for him. I know how hard it is when you like someone and you are afraid to tell them, but I never compounded the problem by living with them. I liked the new character Tetsu as it is nice for Mugi to have an adult in his life. He does seem to need someone to help guide him a little since his father is out on business.

As usual, the artwork by Toshihiko Kobayashi is good and the short stories are fun and enjoyable. The translation and adaptation to English is well-done also and the dialog flows well.

As for the series itself, I find that I am always entertained and finish each book with a smile on my face. I do wonder if Mugi and Yuu will ever confess that they like each other. Maybe Yuu will figure it out one day, but she sure doesn't seem to see how Mugi feels now. She seems to only to want Mugi as a friend and a source of food. Bummer for Mugi.

Overall, Pastel: Volume 5 is another highly pleasurable read and I look forward to more romantic boo boos with Mugi and Yuu in Pastel: Volume 6.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
