Homo for the Holidays is a collection of mostly gay Christmas tales. In this collection are found stories of gay romantic love, the love between a father and his gay son, and old lovers returning from the beyond. There are stories within the pages about a magical Christmas tree that appears of its own accord every year, angels, ghosts, and a century-old hotel that miraculously reappears during the holiday season. Most of the stories are written for gay readers, but some are just cozy Christmas tales. There are stories in this volume for all true lovers of Christmas. So, grab a plate of Christmas cookies and a steaming cup of cocoa and sit down to enjoy this collection of most gay Christmas tales. This collection of holiday tales was a treat. Many of the stories were familiar from Mark's previous releases and a few from scenes that were included in later novels. A few were entirely new to me. Overall they evoked a warm and familiar Christmas feeling and having grown up in the midwest they brought back a lot of my own holiday memories as well.
I probably would have given them another star but I made the mistake of reading too many of them at one time. Just like fruitcake, these are best when spread out, perhaps over a few years and savored for all their nuances.
Still, I'm sure that I'll bring a few of them out year after year and re-read them when I want to evoke a Christmas feeling.
Note: I enjoyed this as an audiobook on Audible. There are so many positive things to say about this book, but the golden-throated narrator took my ears to a new level by singing in one of the vignettes. Oh. My. God. That. Voice! Jerry Bradshaw has narrated a handful of Mark Roeder's works and I hope to hear him narrate much, much more. Especially when there's a reason for him to sing! I'm going to be perfectly honest and easy up front that I kind of hate Christmas. I hate the commercialness. I hate compulsory gift-giving that leads to last resort "gotta get something!" purchases of things like bubble bath. I don't believe in God, so the religious angle does nothing for me either. My grinchy self even hates the snow. So when I was gifted a collection of Christmas stories, I wasn't exactly thrilled or expecting much. Way to prove me wrong, Mark Roeder! This wasn't really a laughing out loud book, but it sure had me spending a few extra minutes in my car before going into work, trying to stop crying at some of the more emotional stories. Instead of promoting excess, these stories acknowledged the difficulty so many people have with money and encouraged thoughtful, even if cheap (or free!) gifts. Instead of cramming the idea of spending time with toxic family or existing only for romantic love, these stories acknowledged people who have cobbled together families or even people who spend the holidays completely alone and how those circumstances can still lead to happiness and a lovely day. There was much talk about forgiveness and acceptance and just honest love. I highly recommend this, even to my fellow Christmas haters.
Very good writing. I'm not a big fan of short stories but this sounded interesting. I only gave it 2 stars because in my opinion most of these stories were sad and depressing and I hate that. Plus there just on the good side of PG and I much prefer XXX reading, lol.
