Greek Popular Morality in the Time of Plato and Aristotle

In ancient Greece, as today, popular moral attitudes differed importantly from the theories of moral philosophers. While for the latter we have Plato and Aristotle, this insightful work explores the everyday moral conceptions to which orators appealed in court and political assemblies, and which were reflected in non-philosophical literature. A very strangely organized book -- short sections on various 'topics' with lots of examples -- but rich in insight. Recommended for anyone who wants to gain a granular sense of the mentalité of 4th cen. Athens. K.J. Dover, of course, is a (justly) celebrated scholar.
