His stories, situated at the lighter end of the scale of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential. His breakout novel was King Solomon's Mines (1885), which was to be the first in a series telling of the multitudinous adventures of its protagonist, Allan Quatermain.
Haggard was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Conservative candidate for the Eastern division of Norfolk in 1895. The locality of Rider, British Columbia, was named in his memory.

হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ডের বইয়ের কাহিনীই এমন- রাজ্য, রাজত্ব, বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা,প্রেম, সংঘাত! আর এদের মধ্যেই থাকবে আফ্রিকার মরুভূমির সুন্দর বর্ণনা; আর থাকবে অতি সুন্দরী রূপসী রাজকন্যার কাহিনী যার রূপ আর সৌন্দর্যের বর্ণনা করা আমার মতো নিরীহ পাঠক দ্বারা সম্ভব না। সত্যিই হ্যাগার্ড যেভাবে রূপের বর্ণনা দেন আমি আর কাউকে দেখিনি এমন বর্ণনা করতে!
প্রাচীন মিশরের ফারাও ছিলেন নিঃসন্তান। ওদিকে মেম্ফিসের কুমার তার সৎ ভাই আবি, সে ষড়যন্ত্র করার চেষ্টায় আছে কিভাবে সে পুরো মিশরের ফারাও হতে পারবে।কিন্তু এরই মধ্যে দেবতা আমেনের কাছে প্রার্থনা করে ফারাও আর রাণী আহুরা একজন কন্যা সন্তান লাভ করলেন। কন্যার নাম নেতের তুয়া অর্থাৎ ভোরের তারা যে কিনা স্বয়ং আমেনের কন্যা এবং তার জন্মের সময় তার সুরক্ষা হেতু তার সাথেই পাঠানো হয় ভোরের তারার কা'কে। কা মানে ২য় সত্তা। প্রজ্ঞা, সৌন্দর্য, সুন্দর মন কি নেই ভোরের তারার!!
নেতের তুয়া ভালোবেসে ফেললো তারই সাথে বড় হওয়া বাল্যবন্ধু রামেসকে। কিন্তু মিশরের ভবিষ্যৎ রাণীর কোনো অধিকার নেই এমন কাউকে ভালোবাসার, তাকে অবশ্যই বিয়ে করতে হবে সমগোত্রীয় কাউকে। সময়ের আবর্তে রামেস পড়লো মহাবিপদে, তাকে যেতে হলো মিশর ছেড়ে অনেক দূরে। এদিকে মিশরের ফারাও কন্যাকে নিয়ে বের হলেন ভ্রমণে। মেম্ফিস রাজ্যে ভাই আবির ওখানে গেলে ঘৃণ্য ষড়যন্ত্রের শিকার হন তারা। আবির নজর পড়ে পরমা সুন্দরী ভাতিজির উপর। পুরোপুরি বন্দী হয়ে যায় নেতের তুয়া আর ফারাও মৃত্যুর কোলে ঢলে পড়েন।
ওদিকে রামেসকে যে সংবাদ পাঠানো হবে তারও উপায় নেই, সে আছে বহুদূরে। বছরের পর বছর লেগে যাবে সংবাদ বাহককে যেতে আসতে। তাহলে কি হবে ভোরের তারার??
তৃতীয় চতুর্থাংশে গিয়ে কাহিনী একটু ধীর গতির হয়ে গিয়েছিল । আরেকটু ছোট হলে বেশ ভালো হতো। ৩ তারাই দিতাম কিন্তু ভিলেন রাজাদের কর্মকান্ডে এমন মজা পেয়েছি আর নেতের তুয়া মানে এই ভোরের তারার সৌন্দর্যের বর্ণনায় (নীল চোখ!) এমন মোহিত হয়ে গেছি যে ১ তারা বেশি দিলাম।
এই বইয়ে জাদুরও উল্লেখ আছে।
বরাবরের মতোই সেবার অনুবাদ নিয়ে কোনো কথা হবে না :)

A web press carries out the folding itself, delivering bundles of signatures (sections) ready to go into the gathering line. Notice that when the book is being printed it is being printed one (or two) signatures at a time, not one complete book at a time. Excess numbers are printed to make up for any spoilage due to "make-readies" or test pages to assure final print quality.
A make-ready is the preparatory work carried out by the pressmen to get the printing press up to the required quality of impression. Included in make-ready is the time taken to mount the plate onto the machine, clean up any mess from the previous job, and get the press up to speed. As soon as the pressman decides that the printing is correct, all the make-ready sheets will be discarded, and the press will start making books. Similar make readies take place in the folding and binding areas, each involving spoilage of paper.

In the middle of last century there were still many trade binders – stand-alone binding companies which did no printing, specializing in binding alone. At that time, because of the dominance of letterpress printing, typesetting and printing took place in one location, and binding in a different factory. When type was all metal, a typical book's worth of type would be bulky, fragile and heavy. The less it was moved in this condition the better: so printing would be carried out in the same location as the typesetting. Printed sheets on the other hand could easily be moved. Now, because of increasing computerization of preparing a book for the printer, the typesetting part of the job has flowed upstream, where it is done either by separately contracting companies working for the publisher, by the publishers themselves, or even by the authors. Mergers in the book manufacturing industry mean that it is now unusual to find a bindery which is not also involved in book printing

A good book with a classic story. Perhaps the most apparent problem would be inaccuracies regarding the portrayal of Egypt, but given the publishing date it's probably permissible.
That said, this story features everything a reader could ask for including a strong female lead, which was more likely the sticking point for Haggard's contemporaries than the portrayal of ancient Egypt!
Moving from the time of the young Queen's birth to her eventual maturation, Haggard paints a great picture of the heroine and manages to spin an entertaining yarn at the same time.

যতদূর জানতে পেরেছি আসম বইটি ২৭৮ পৃষ্ঠার। তবে বাংলায় অনূদিত বইটি ২২৮ পৃষ্ঠার। বইটিতে একশন, রোমাঞ্চ এবং ড্রামার পাশাপাশি রোমান্টিকতার একটা ছোঁয়াও আছে। একশন ও রোমাঞ্চকর অংশগুলো তেমন একটা আকর্ষণীয় ছিলো না। অন্যান্য একশন ও রোমাঞ্চকর বই পড়ার সময় যেমন একতা উত্তেজনা অনুভূত হয় তেমনটা আমি এই বইটিতে পাইনি। তবে গল্পে একশন ও রোমাঞ্চের চাইতে ড্রামা ও রোমান্টিকতায় গুরুত্ব একটু বেশি দেয়া হয়েছে। বইটি পড়ে প্রাচীন মিশরের মানুষদের জীবনযাত্রা এবং ফারাওদের সম্পর্কে কিছুটা ধারনা লাভ করেছি। এছাড়া মিশরীয় মিথলজী সম্পর্কেও অনেক কিছু জানতে পেরেছি। যারা মিশরবিদ্যায় বা মিশরতত্ত্বে আগ্রহী তাদের কাছে এই বইটি উপভোগ্য হতে পারে।

হ্যাগার্ড এর অন্যান্য বই গুলোর তুলনায় এই বইটা অনেক মন্থর। কিন্তু কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্রের নামটা আচ্ছন্ন করে রাখার মত।
"নেতের তুয়া", কেমন যেন একটা রহস্যময় কুসুম কোমলতা আছে নামটার ভিতর।নাম টা যতবার পড়েছি, "ডোপামাইন" আর "সেরোটনিন" এর প্রবাহ উল্লেখযোগ্য পরিমাণে ছিল। ;)

Для кого вообще пишутся художественные произведения о Древнем Египте? Разве они действительно кому-то интересны? Ладно бы, если писатель серьёзно намеревался отразить последние сведения, обнародованные египтологами. Тогда интерес к истории Египта самую малость проснётся вновь. Но ежели писатель создаёт произведение, более опираясь на собственную фантазию — это напоминает сказку по мотивам. Примерно так пос��упил и Райдер Хаггард, написав «Утреннюю звезду». Даже создалось впечатление, что совсем не имеет значения, где и когда описываемое могло происходить. Впрочем, подача истории вышла такой, отчего суфражистки и феминистки должны были придти в подлинный восторг.

The Pharaoh's daughter should marry though she has a lover from childhood. Treachery is afoot from the Pharaoh's brother, Tua's uncle, who, when he sees her grown, wants her for his wife though she has discouraged other suitors. There are magicians, Tua's nurse and Abi the uncle's personal magician. Swift enjoyable reading blends the issues of the Egyptian royals and their political problems with their magical religion. Haggard moves from his knowledge of their religion into its depictions, belief into unexpected happenings, arduous journeys into mirage-like direction, transforming the lives of the characters.

I liked everything about it except the length—it’s too short.
Haggard tells a great story here, I would say one of his strongest. I wish he’d explored more of this world and built up some of the characters and legends. Even so, I would recommend it. Just be prepared to come away wanting more by the end.

A splendid tale, sweeping across ancient egypt.

It felt slow compared to other books. The novel, based on Egyptian mythology and life, has stories of pharaohs, mythology, beautiful princesses (an essential element of Haggard's books!), intrigue, war, and love conflicts.

people who love to read Egyptian Pharaohs and their magical stories can make a place in their shelves for this book. I have read a number of Henry Haggard’s thrillers and I think this book is a little dissapointment.

The Chinese inventor Bi Sheng made movable type of earthenware circa 1045, but there are no known surviving examples of his printing. Loved this book! I just discovered H. Rider Haggard on my kindle via a free public domain book, The People of the Mist. That book led me to this one. I'm amazed at the page turning fun of a couple of books from the late 1800s. Solid adventure and a dash of romance. I really enjoy books that read like stories told by a fine bard. I can imagine this story being told while sitting near a fire and everyone hanging on the storyteller's next word. I can't wait to read King Solomon's Mines!

A long sort-of-fairy-tale of ancient Egypt, at least as Haggard saw it.
Everything is fore-ordained, and the inevitable fate that befalls various baddies is enforced directly by the will of the gods. Nice imagery, but that could not make up for the lack of suspense.
Not surprised that people like it; it is just not for me.

I had a hard time finishing this. It moved slow at times and I wasn't used to the older style of writing. It was written like an adventure/fairytale in a high language, but relationships weren't well developed, so it was annoying at times.

I love Haggard! Good plot, good character development, and just enough detail. Yes, you may know how the story will end, but you keep reading for the twists and turns of circumstances of which Haggard is a master.

This is a very well written, engrossing story. Wonderful detail of ancient Egypt. I was suprosed to learn that this was written about 100 years ago.

Sturdy old classic set in ancient Egypt. Fun to read, satisfying story arc and conclusion. Not hokey at all.
