If you are a person who prepares lunches for yourself or others, this is a fun and clever cookbook worthy of your time. There is a great deal of variety despite the very simple recipe instructions and the photos of every delicious-looking lunch offer proof of this variety.
The cover claims these non-sad lunches can be made in 5 minutes, and that may be true for some but I'd wager some might take 10-15 minutes to make, at least for me anyway. The recipes rely heavily on using premade products from the grocery, like packaged cooked beets and prepared foods from the deli that help hasten the amount of time involved for making the lunches.
The book is broken into 6 parts:
1. Classics & New Classics, which are vegetable based salads and the instructions for all are basically make dressing, toss ingredients, except dressing, together and put in your lunch box. Put dressing in separate container with tight lid and mix into salad just before you eat it. There are a few extra steps for some recipes, like putting lemon juice on some components before tossing into salad or putting nuts or chips into a separate container and adding after dressing is deployed.;
2. Noodles & Zoodles, which are the foundation ingredients for all recipes in this section. Instructions follow same format as above.;
3. Grains & Seeds, are you seeing the pattern, same instructions...;
4. Beans & Legumes, same as above but with you know what.;
5. Bento Boxes, and here the instructions change to put all ingredients into your bento box and seal. Bento ingredients are curated to create a theme, French, Italian, NY Deli, Korean, etc..;
and 6. Wraps, similar to above except with these you top the wrap with the ingredients then roll it up, and sometimes you spread something on the wrap first.
Lots of tasty options in here. My favourite here is the Ploughmans Salad. I'm very simple when it comes to salads plus it has cheese. They also make a very valid point: it's your lunch break, move away from your desk.
