Carswell has captured the life of Ivy Litvinov, an amazing British woman, stranded in the Soviet Union, married to a high-level but endangered man, threatened by the Stalinist system, --she still managed to write for the Manchester Guardian, Harper's Bazaar, the New Yorker,--also teach English, translate literature, teach piano, cultivate a circle of devoted friends, and raise two remarkably talented children...

The biography is fine but Ivy Litvinov was rather a dismal and depraved woman, hence this not being an enjoyable read.
