Primo libro dell'anno, e non potevo chiedere di iniziare meglio.
Aadam è un genio incompreso, Eeva un'avvocatessa che affoga il senso di inadeguatezza nell'alcool.
Secondo il detto "dio li fa e poi li accoppia", le loro vite si incrociano quando l'ennesima esplosione nel laboratorio di Aadam coincide con l'incarcerazione del (Elon Musk?) finlandese. Non solo Eeva gli evita la galera, ma lo assiste nel costituire la sua nuova impresa, che diventerà una potenza mondiale nel campo dell'energia pulita.
Ho dovuto controllare in quale anno sia uscito questo libro, tanto è contemporanea la storia. Invece Paasilinna ci era già arrivato nel 1993, con il suo tipico umorismo. E a supporto della combriccola c'è anche il grande Seppo Sorjonen, il personaggio di supporto che amo di più nella letteratura mondiale.

Ho appena finito e già penso di rileggerlo.

Prima di Greta Thunberg e dei #fridaysforfuture Arto Paasilinna, nel lontano 1993, aveva già intuito che per cambiare le cose e per salvare il pianeta c'era bisogno di una rivoluzione energetica!

Aadam Rymattyla, il protagonista di questa storia, è un imprenditore di Tattarisuo pieno di debiti e pieno di figli (avuti da donne diverse) che ha avuto da sempre la passione per le invenzioni.

A causa di una serie di sfortunati eventi però perde tutto tranne un paio di prototipi di sua creazione di batterie ultraleggere.

Grazie a questa invenzione e all'aiuto dell'avvocatessa Eeva Kontupohja riesce a risollevarsi alla grande da questa situazione apparentemente senza via d'uscita diventando nell'arco di pochi mesi la persona più ricca del pianeta Terra!

Una lettura leggera, forse anche troppo rispetto alle mie aspettative, ma che a modo suo tenta (seppur con un approccio semplicistico e fin troppo lineare) di aggiungere con quasi 30 anni di anticipo un tassello al discorso climatico mondiale.

Ci vedrei bene un film tratto da questo libro, magari girato da Wes Anderson. 😉

Últimamente Paasilinna no consigue cautivarme como lo hizo con La dulce envenenadora y con Delicioso suicidio. Sigue teniendo esa gran dosis de crítica social, pero la parte humorística que es la que hace más ligeros sus libros, está un tanto escasa.

Arto non delude mai, con il suo sottile umorismo, gli elenchi dettagliati e la scrittura disincantata che accompagna le vicissitudini dei suoi personaggi squinternati. Ho letto e amato tutti i suoi libri, e questo, pubblicato postumo in Italia, è uno dei migliori, e molto attuale nei temi.

Rispetto agli ultimi libri editi dell’autore post mortem è probabile che questo sia quello che parte con l’idea migliore alla base.
Per una buona parte sembra di risentire nelle pagine il Paasilinna dei romanzi migliori della produzione.
L’eco dei grandi successi, l’ironia e il colpo di scena dietro l’angolo sono sempre lì.
Perde un po’ forza mano mano che la narrazione avanza, rallentando l’azione fino a incepparsi un po’.
Riprende quota sul finale, ma non posso dire perché, sennò faccio un mega spoiler.
Solita divertente cavalcata per le pazze praterie della fantasia dell’autore finlandese: non sarà tra i migliori e tra quelli indimenticabili, ma sicuramente come qualità è appena sotto.
Quanto ci hai fatto divertire Aarto - anche tu sei lassù vagolante che guardi la Terra?

Come ho già detto altre volte, Paasilinna ha il dono di rendere se non piacevole, leggibile e scorrevole la trattazione di argomenti pesanti, noiosi o lontani dalle competenze o interessi del grande pubblico; il tutto con un'ironia spesso garbata, ma non per questo meno efficace. Qui non si fa eccezione. La storia di Aadam ed Eeva, in qualche modo novelli progenitori di un'umanità nuova e soprattutto ecosostenibile, che ascendono da un'esistenza tutto sommato piatta e tendente verso il basso su fino al gotha dell'industria energetica finlandese e mondiale è un ottimo intrattenimento, con le solite frecciatine che fanno riflettere.

A book based on the extraordinary circumstances of the author, that prophetised much with regard to electrical cars and technology beyond its time, but didn't really deliver as a tall tale.

(This review is based on Adam og Eva, the Norwegian translation of Aatami ja Eeva (both translate to Adam and Eve in English). This was a necessity since this reviewer doesn't understand much Finnish. Even so, the similarities between Finnish culture and that of Northern Norway (where this reviewer hails from) are strong. Our sense of humour is largely the same, even if the Finnish are often a bit more deadpan about it. Our surroundings, political situation, and taste for alcohol aren't that different either. Hopefully this means that only minor nuances has escaped this reviewer. I am, however, mindful that reading any translation always increases the risk of misunderstandings, and it's particularly important to keep this in mind now that I for once have found a Paasilinna novel which I feel didn't live up to the author's standards.)

It may come as a surprise, as it did to this reviewer, to learn that Paasilinna was an inventor – the Norwegian translator was gracious enough to leave an afterword detailing hos forays therein. In fact he won a national contest with a mechanical system for the cultivation of plants. It was never put into production, but it was still quite an achievement – and wouldn't you know it, Aatami Rymättylä has invented the very same thing:

About ten years ago, Aatami Rymättylä had participated in the greatest inventors' contest in the Nordic countries, which was arranged by a Swedish-Danish industrial group.

[...] Aatami's then wife, Laura, expressed doubt regarding her husbands genius when he carried his kilo-heavy envelope to the post office. She thought the whole thing ridiculous, but however it was, Aatami's contribution, a mechanical system for the cultivation of plants, was so brilliant that there wasn't anyone who would produce the thing even for the small Nordic market. (pp. 11-12; reviewer's own translation)

Another interesting coincidence is that this novel is set in '93, and so Aatami, like Paasilinna, must have won his price in '83. But this wasn't the full extent of either of their inventions. They both invented a new kind of landmine and a double-barrelled machine gun while they served in the Finnish army, but the Finnish army didn't see a value in any of it, nor were they paid for either of the inventions.

What Paasilinna did end up getting paid for was as a master of the tall tale, and it's easy to see why he felt that this would be an excellent basis for one. When he had lived these extraordinary circumstances it would have been amiss not to tie a yarn to it and spin it further. And while the yarn unfortunately didn't live up to it, it all began really well.

Aatami had a sole proprietorship, he was a little more than forty years old, densely built and was incredibly Finnish both in looks and being. He was big, accustomed to pull a load, and it was clear that his blood had boiled over more than once in his life. (pp. 7-8; reviewer's translation)

What he owns is a mechanical repair shop which focuses on the changing of car batteries, but it isn't doing to well in the economic recession. His excess of children, legitimate and illegitimate, are also costly to keep up and running, which adds to his burden. He has sold his apartment, the bailiff stops by from time to time to collect debts by way of making off with some of his batteries, and he keeps setting fire to his shop – accidentally, one should add. Only one hope remains. If he can invent something good then his fortune will turn. He might even get rich, especially if he can make a lightweight battery to revolutionise the industry. So far his attempts had led only to the frustration of the local fire department.

But it wouldn't be much of a tall tale if he didn't surpass what is believable, so his dream doe come true: He manages to make the organic light-weight battery of his dreams. With the help of Eeva Kontupohja, a lawyer with an idea on how to do business and with the means to start up one, he does indeed manage to start up one. Yet, Aatami's invention might not have been the great achievement that he thought it was. It appears to have been done before. Several times, in fact. Aatami is just the first one that OPEC isn't able to scare or buy off. Which is how Luigi Rapaleore comes into the story, an experienced assassin and the comedy relief. Another individual who gets involved is none other than Seppo Sorjonen, a good friend of Aatami, who has just returned from his adventures in Elämä lyhyt, Rytkönen pitkä (translation: Life Is Short, Rytkönen Is Long).

That is the setup to the story. It has an interesting premise and characters with fascinating backstories. It even includes Seppo, the only character that the author liked well enough to include in no less than three novels. But it all leads to an almost non-existent love story, a whole lot of business travels that don't amount to anything, and Seppo is absent from almost all of it since he is studying medicine. Luigi's slapstick comedy à la the Marx Brothers is a high point, but not much else is.

That Aatami and Eeva are the Finnish equivalents to Adam and Eve ought to be obvious from the title, and one would expect there to be some kind of biblical analogy here. Yet the only connection that comes to mind is that Eeva has an alcohol problem, and that this might be a stand-in for the snake in the garden. Beyond that, this has nothing to do with the Garden of Eden or 'Genesis'.

Nevertheless, it's worth giving the topic of alcohol abuse some consideration. The two former novels where Seppo Sorjonen has played a part, has had serious underlying themes. The first, Huurmava juokkoitsemurha (translation: Charming Mass-Suicide), deals with suicide in a surprisingly successful manner, bringing the reader hope. The second, Life Is Short, Rytkönen Is Long, deals with dementia, and does a good job of it even if it doesn't have the profound impact of the first. In Adam and Eve, however, Eeva's substance abuse is given enough room to be a theme on it's own, but this reviewer couldn't find that the book does all that much with it besides making the statement that it's a serious problem. The author might, of course, never have intended to add any particular theme to this book, but in the wake of the two previous ones there came an expectation for something more, especially due to Seppo's appearance here.

Adam and Eve provides another surprise instead. It's presentience with regard to the electric vehicle revolution is remarkable. It talks about the lightness of the batteries, the expected mileage per charge, the lack of sound in traffic, the issues with supply due to the sudden increase in demand for them, the performance of electrical vehicles compared to those with combustion engines, and much more. This book is, simply put, more savvy with technology than one could expect from a tall tale.

It's the conclusion of this reviewer that Adam and Eve is still a worthwhile read for those who appreciate the author's style. Yet it's worth adjusting ones expectations somewhat before cracking it open. Every author will write a story that isn't up to the quality of their general output, and this is one of Paasilinna's dips. But at least it has Luigi and his bouts of accidental self-harm are magnificent.

Aatami Rymättyla ist Chemiker mit großen Träumen. Er hat ein Leichtakku entwickelt, das die Welt verändern soll. Da seine kleine Fabrik berühmt berüchtigt für harmlose Explosionen ist, kommt die Feuerwehr schon gar nicht mehr zum Löschen. Dumm nur, dass das bei dieser Explosion notwendig gewesen wäre. Aatamis Fabrik brennt ab und er wird wegen Brandstiftung eingesperrt. Hochverschuldet mit Sieben Kindern, die auf Alimente warten, ist die Lage aussichtslos, bis er Eeva Kontupohja kennenlernt, seine Anwältin und Quartalssäuferin, die das große Geschäft wittert. Eeva beschließt, zusammen mit Aatami das geniale Superakku weltweit zu vermarkten, und zieht sich den Hass der ölexportierenden Länder zu, die einen Killer auf Aatami ansetzen, der diese Angelegenheit sehr persönlich nimmt.

Selten habe ich ein so bitterböses, sarkastisches und rasantes Radiohörspiel gehört. 2010 vertonte der WDR den gleichnamigen Roman von Arto Paasilinna, der für seine bissig, sarkastischen, bitterbösen Bücher bekannt ist. Die Sprecher sind wirklich außerordentlich gut, deutlich über dem normalen Radiohörspieleniveau. Das wirklich Gelungene jedoch ist der Soundtrack, der schwer zu beschreiben finnisch und witzig ist und die abgedrehte Handlung perfekt mit seinem Akkulied akzentuiert.

Mi ha attirato la copertina dal formato inusuale, l'ambientazione finlandese, la trama bizzarra. Ed eccomi fan di Aarto Pasilinna, dopo aver terminato la lettura del suo romanzo, che in un paio di scene mi ha persino strappato qualche risata. Sì, perché Aadam ed Eeva è un esempio molto riuscito di humour freddo, nel vero senso della parola: nordico. Aadam Rymättylä, sette figli avuti da tre donne diverse, conduce una morigerata esistenza tra casa e bottega, entrambe in un capannone di produzione e stoccaggio di batterie per veicoli. Unico vizio (quello delle donne, nel corso della vita, se l'è già tolto con soddisfazione) sono i continui esperimenti con cui mette a dura prova la resistenza del fabbricato, e dei vicini. Aadam è infatti alla ricerca della formula perfetta per la migliore batteria del mondo: leggera, ecologica, sostenibile: la soluzione ai problemi energetici e di inquinamento dell'Umanità. E la trova. Peccato che, per ottenerla, distrugga tutto ciò che ha e rischi grosso. Ma dalle ceneri della sua azienda non poteva che nascere la Fenice del successo: e Aadam in breve, con la fedele e alcolizzata avvocatessa Eeva, mette su una società in grado di dare a lui, e al mondo, una vita diversa. Gli interessi in gioco, adesso, sono molto grossi: riuscirà il nostro eroe a uscire indenne da ciò che comporta, in onori e oneri, essere l'inventore del momento? Con garbo, fantasia e molta ironia Aarto Paasilinna ci trasporta nella sua terra, la Finlandia, che siamo abituati a conoscere come "il Paese più felice del mondo", quello con uno dei migliori sistemi di istruzione, e che qui sembra quasi descritto dalla regia di Ken Loach. Comunque una terra di opportunità, dove l'homo novus può diventare il nuovo Bill Gates o Elon Musk, anche se gli affari si trattano in un igloo lappone, dopo una passeggiata a dorso di renna. Il finale è a sorpresa (il lettore sa che qualcosa accadrà, ma immagina altro) e la lettura è così piacevole che possiamo anche perdonare all'autore di aver scelto, come "cattivo", un italiano del Sud.

Aadam Rymattyla è un piccolo imprenditore finlandese, pieno di debiti e di figli, che sta cercando di fare la scoperta del secolo, ovvero una batteria ultraleggera che rivoluzionerà il concetto di energia. Purtroppo i suoi esperimenti al momento creano solo delle esplosioni e relativi danni all'interno del suo capannone, finché un incendio, questa volta non causato da lui, lo lascia definitivamente sul lastrico. Dopo qualche giorno in prigione, è l'avvocata Eeva Kontupohja a scagionarlo e soprattutto a credere nella sua idea rivoluzionarla. Lo aiuta, mettendogli a disposizione la sua professionalità ed i soldi per finanziare il progetto, facendogli finalmente raggiungere l'obiettivo. Da un giorno con l'altro, Aadam si ritrova da povero in canna a super ricco, grazie alla nascita della Batterie e Accumulatori Aadam & Eeva srl. Peccato, però, che una batteria come quella ultraleggera non venga vista di buon occhio proprio dai potenti padroni del petrolio che temono di perdere i loro lauti guadagni. Chi la spunterà? Si troverà un compromesso che accontenti entrambe le parti o qualcuno dovrà soccombere? Aadam ed Eeva riusciranno insieme a dar vita ad una nuova era per l'umanità?
Paasilinna, con la sua ironia e la sua abilità, ci guida in questa storia che anticipa di molti anni (il libro è stato pubblicato nel 1993) una delle tematiche più scottanti ed attuali, ovvero quella del risparmio energico e dell'uso di fonti alternative.

Dopo "Piccoli suicidi tra amici", ho ritrovato lo stile inconfondibile di Paasilinna in questo libro leggero ed adatto per staccare. Sempre presente il tassista Seppo Sorjonen, personaggio collaudato e singolare. L'unica pecca, a mio avviso, in alcuni punti troppo lungo e prolisso.

No sé bien qué se propone el autor con este libro, si es un divertimento, una especie de parábola ecologista o una pequeña tomadura de pelo. No había leído nada de Paasilinna y no sé si volveré a hacerlo.

Cuenta la historia de un científico finlandés medio colgado que descubre un tipo de baterías eléctricas superpotentes y pequeñas, la energía del futuro, y consigue comercializarlas con la ayuda de una abogada que se convierte en su pareja.

Ya como multimillonarios, entregados a una orgía de despilfarro, se dedican a hacer una porción de extravagancias y caprichos con sus dineros, y alguna cosa algo más solidaria, a lo loco.

En un momento dado se introduce una inocente trama criminal que se queda en anécdota más bien ridícula.

Las descripciones de los personajes son escuetas, esquemáticas, cuando no arquetípicas … Incluso el protagonista parece tener un carácter voluble e impredecible. Parece ser más protagonista la colectividad que los personajes.

Por otro lado, el relato está plagado de concienzudas explicaciones técnicas y comerciales, con pinta de ser inventadas, de desigual interés.

En fin, flojito y no poco absurdo.

Primo approccio con l'autore e credo di non essere riuscita ad apprezzare appieno il libro in questione.
Nonostate sia stato scritto almeno 30 anni fa, la storia di per sè tratta tematiche all'ordine del giorno come l'ecologia ed il problema ambientale. Lo scrittore c'ha proprio visto giusto, prima di molti su determinate cose.
Lo stile di scritture è semplice e veloce, il libro scorre che una meraviglia. I due protagonosti, caratterizzati fantasticamente, non fanno che incarnare fli ideali, i sogni e le ispirazioni di tutti noi.
Avrei preferito iniziare forse da un altro titolo, per capire bene il pensiero dello scrittore, ma tutto sommato devo dire che l'ho apprezzato.

Lettura semplice e veloce che affronta un tema attualissimo pur essendo stato scritto circa 30 anni fa! E' il primo libro che leggo di questo autore e mi sono piaciuti sia i protagonisti, semplici ma originali e stravaganti, che le situazioni assurde e grottesche in cui si ritrovano, che il sottofondo ironico con cui tutta la storia si svolge. Ultimo ma non meno importante un appunto sul formato del libro, molto comodo da portare nello zaino, da leggere seduti e soprattutto sdraiati anche di lato nel letto!!

Obwohl ich die Recherchearbeiten (die bestimmt oft notwendig sind) und die vielen Reisen in seinen Büchern durch Finnland durchaus zu würdigen weiß und auch mag, entgeht mir doch in seinem Büchern der viel gelobte Humor. Es kann sein, dass meiner einfach auf einer ganz anderen Wellenlinie liegt. Auch in diesem Buch konnte ich nur an einer Stelle schmunzeln. Beindruckend finde ich, dass sich der Autor schon 1993 dem Thema Elektromobilität zuwand, das ja gerade heute, knapp 30 Jahre später, mittlerweile ein aktuelles Thema ist!

Un libro leggero e divertente, ma che affronta problematiche serie. L'"umorista" Paasilinna si dimostra molto più serio e concreto do tanti "ecologisti" dell'ultima ora innamorati della propulsione elettrica.
Trenta anni fà aveva già ben chiaro che la propulsione elettrica sarebbe stata una alternativa ecologica solo se si fosse risolto il problema della densità di energia delle batterie.
A parte qualche piccola imprecisione, un libro molto ben scritto.

Olipa hölmö kirja. Kai se kaikki hölmöily olisi pitänyt laittaa huumorin piikkiin, mutta voisi huumori olla fiksumpaakin.

Seuraa spoileri: Yksi erityisesti häiritsevä hölmöys oli Rymättylän vaientamiseksi ja sen myötä mullistavan keksinnön hävittäjäksi palkattu ammattitappaja, joka jatkoi tappamisyrityksiään vielä siinäkin vaiheessa, kun akkutuotanto oli jo täydessä käynnissä ja maailma muuttunut. Mitä se enää siinä vaiheessa olisi auttanut, kun pökäle oli jo niin sanotusti lahkeessa?

Written in 1993, the story recounts a Finish inventor bringing to market an ultra-light car battery technology, revolutionising not just the world of locomotion, but the entire global economy, ending [spoiler alert!] with the ultra-rich protagonist buying himself a trip to space – and being stranded there. (Elon Musk had at the time of writing just left Canada to study business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania.)

Wieder eine Trouvaille aus dem Brockenhaus. Mit so viel trockenem Humor kann nur ein Finne schreiben. Die Geschichte spielt in den 90er Jahren, hat aber einige Bezüge zur heutigen Welt (Elektrifizierung der Mobilität, Rolle der Erdöllobby, Umgang mit grossem Reichtum etc.). Der Hauptakteur ist eine positive Version von Elon Musk, ein Philanthrop vor dem Herrn, den es am Ende auch in den Weltall zieht.

A tratti sembra una favola, in alcuni punti è forse un po' lento, ma è ricco di trovate e di fantasia. Sotto l'aspetto leggero non è difficile vedere riflessioni importanti. Das Buch hatte einen interessanten Anfang - das Schräge hat mir sehr gefallen, da es anders ist von dem, was ich normalerweise lese. Leider kam dann eine schräge Sache nach der anderen und es wurde mir zu viel. Ich habe dann nur noch durchgeblättert.
Der Schreibstil ist gut; die Sätze sind lang und dennoch rund und flüssig zu lesen.

Une plongée dans l'univers loufoque d'Arto Paasilinna, un auteur que j'apprécie vraiment pour la poésie qui se dégage dans ses romans.
Mais également une réflexion très actuelle avec une solution révolutionnaire.
Attention le roman a été publié en 1993, ce qui peut expliquer un anachronisme!

Today I read about Jeff Bezos who plans to travel to space and it made me think of Aatami's story in this book. The book is a quick, light and easy read. It's not Paasilinna's best, but a joy nevertheless, and I still remember it, about 25 years after having read it.

Una storiella simpatica, quasi una favola raccontata con un briciolo di umorismo ed un finale sospeso. Piacevole:

Me ha hecho pasar un buen rato, todo y que en algunos momentos me costaba seguir la historia por los conceptos técnicos.
Adoro la ironía y sarcasmo del autor.
Primera inmersión en literatura finlandesa, seguro repetiré con el autor.

La anécdota queda corta para tantas páginas, uno siempre siente que algo más va a ocurrir pero nada, es todo. Seguramente tendrá mejores pero no sé si compre otro libro suyo, muy costoso para míseras tres estrellas.
