Tom Gillies and Dick Potter secretly met at their favorite cave to concoct their plans for the day and plot the mischievous schemes that have given them so bad a name on Norton Island. The townspeople complain that the island is too small to hold such troublesome boys. Tom is sent away to work, where he learns that his bad habits have fastened strong chains around him, and has tied bonding knots, making him a prisoner. He discovers the One who can untie those dreadful knots and free him to live a productive life among the people of Norton Island.
"'Habit will fasten strong chains around you, which will be harder to burst asunder every day. While you wait, Satan works. He is busy tying knots. You are his prisoner, and he is making more and more secure the cords which bind you. Whenever you sin, he ties another knot.' Miss Annie, thank you for showing me how Jesus is the only One who can untie those knots." Tom Gillies is headed down the wrong path until someone befriends him telling him about the Savior.

╰┈➤ As all Lamplighters, this book was had splendid English charm, adventure, and incredibly insightful and inspiring message of the gospel. This author in particular has a way of helping you to find a shared fault in the main character and point you gracefully towards the only true Way. The setting of an island and boyish mischief lines up for a fast paced book that doesn't ever seem to have any spot where you would want to put it down. We follow the main character, Tom Gillies, as he learns first hand that bad morals corrupt good morals and feels the grief on his conscience of the sins he has previously committed. Through the neighbors of his new job he's shown salvation, and we follow him on his journey of choices as he decides which path he should follow.
It's a great book for kids, but I think it's a message that we all need to hear every now and then 🙃
Content: An animal death is slightly described but is essential to the story
Slow beginning and I actually thought I wouldn't like the book. Very glad that I stuck with it because it was quite good. The middle and ending made the book.
