Mostyn/Trevithick Feud #1

Lady Allerton's Wager

Rate this book

An Eternal Triangle - a lord, a lady and an island!

Beth, Lady Allerton, is determined to reclaim Fairhaven Island, stolen from her family generations before by the treacherous Earl of Trevithick. She challenges the current Earl, Marcus Trevithick, to a wager - his island against her virtue!

Marcus Trevithick is intrigued by the lovely incognita who throws down the challenge. Soon he is pursuing her, determined to learn more of her identity - and to tempt her into his bed. As both Beth and Marcus race to claim Fairhaven it seems inevitable that the chase can end only in each other's arms. But when it comes to a choice, which does Beth want more - the Earl of Trevithick, or her beloved island?

A bold and determined hero meets his match in a heroine who is impulsive and intelligent. Passionate, fast-paced and original, this is a Regency historical not to be missed from award nominated, bestselling author Nicola Cornick. Look out for the sequel, The Notorious Marriage, coming in June 2003.

This book turned out to be a little better than I expected. But still not particularly outstanding. At the same time it is completely forgettable. It's been several days since I finished it and I already can't remember the details.

The characters are ok. Beth is a bit too stubborn for her own good, but it didn't irritate me as much as sometimes. Marcus is also fine. They are not truly exceptional characters, but I will not remember them as extremely stupid or extremely annoying. And that’s a good thing.

The conflict between them results from the many years of feud started by their ancestors. And I definitely liked this thread. I am also pleased that Marcus and Beth, despite taking into account long-term opinions about their families, are not only guided by prejudices, but also really try to get to know each other. But of course the final conflict between them could easily be avoided if they only talked to each other. However, this is mainly Beth's fault, since, as always, she knows better. I wasn't particularly happy with her at the moment.

Romance is mainly desire and fascination at first sight. But thankfully neither Marcus nor Beth speak of love at the very beginning. Although they are starting to think about a shared future and so rather quickly. But it's definitely not the fastest or the most ridiculous love thread I've ever read about.

Overall, this book is fine. I think I will read something by this author in the future.

OK, but most of the drama is in the heroine's head.

Both characters were unlikable. One was a bit of an idiot and the other was a bit of a jerk. I was bored halfway through.

This is my first historical romance. I bought the Mills and Boon paperback on 2000. Since then HR fascinated me.
Penuh perjuangan deh :D
Sekarang sih easy... terjemahan banyak... ebooks available, ni hari terbit besok bisa diDL :P
What a long ten years... I've read a numerous HR since, but the first one held a special place in my heart.

London 1813

Lord Trevithick is 33 and Lady Allerton is somewhere around 22 or 23.

I can tell you right off the only reason this story got 3 stars is because of the story and the hero. Beth has noooo part in it. I hated her. For being a widow she sure acted like some virgin. In one minute she tries to act like a grown woman, the next a kid. And OMG every time you turn around she's flying off the handle and running away. Very tiring. She makes things up in her mind and i'll be damned if Marcus don't forgive her. If I was him, once she locked me in the wine cellar, her ass would have been shipped off to London. I never would have wanted to marry her. He deserved way better. So impulsive and immature. She was a terrible heroine. The story was great and would have been better had Beth been more mature. I hated how the end just stopped with no idea where or what happened to Kit.

This book was such a slow read. Not sure if I will attempt Nicola again in a hurry. Too little tension..the book just sort of ambled along.
