This book contains adult themes but is not explicit.
I believe in the power of the storyteller: from the famous filmmaker to your grandmother's stories about her youth, I think a passion for stories are hard-wired into our minds.
Films give us stories that are shown to us in vibrant detail. Books let us create that colorful image in our own minds. I love both and always have.
Let me take you on a journey in your imagination. You'll meet some new people and get a look into their lives. You will like some of those people, and you may hate some others. You may find yourself reaching for a tissue while you read, and you might even laugh out loud a few times.
I write for fun. I blog for fun. I cook for fun. And I clean because I have to.
This is not your average Civil War Historical Romance though it has a lot of background references we may not know until we read this book. It is about Hixson and Sarah and a large cast of supporting characters as family and family friends as well. Everything is energy and that can be gathered and used for healing purposes as we know nowadays but back then it wasn't. Healers were suspect back when a doctor or midwife was not available at times. Many were called witches by the locals that feared them since they could actually help people and that made the public afraid of their power. Yes it goes back hundreds of years as all witch hunts were called to really just get rid of the healers and those just helping others by herbs and tonics as well as doctoring people and maybe animals as well. Anyway as you can guess Sarah saves Hixson during the war and he comes back once the war ended because he never forgot her but it was almost too late since Sarah was attacked just before he arrived. This is a romance that ends up as a love of all time but all I will say is it is worth the read. Warning though I hope you are not squeamish since this is a war zone with all its grisly results and gruesome details a bit including the attack on Sarah. I will state that this does have an HEA so it is worth the read.
This is a delightful tale of an exceptional young woman with special abilities, living in Virginia during the time of the Civil War. She was an orphan living alone with only one close friend and her son who lived on the next farm over. The son, especially, aided her in various ways.
The tale details how this young woman, among other attributes, helps heal a badly injured Union soldier... thus, a true friendship formed between them. She endures a tremendous trial after he leaves. The plot continues to expand after the war ended.
The story was well-written and smoothly "flowed" from one scene to the next. The characters developed seemed very real. The portrayal of the supporting scenes was very effective.
This would be a perfect family story... except for some profanity - which could easily have been avoided
My review of this book offers a Four Stars rating.
The story begins during the civil war, a Lieutenant for the North side, Hixon Morris is lying gut shot on the battlefield, with no hope of surviving. He awakes, in a small cabin, where he has been healed by a woman who is not only a southern "rebel", but a mysterious light gatherer.
Author Patricia Isles weaves a wonderful tale around the miraculous paranormal healer, with a touch of romance, history, and tragedy thrown in. The editing errors were almost to the point of annoying, with several instances of what I suspect was the wrong word choice chosen in spell check. This book was a fun quick read, with interesting characters, flowing dialogue, and entertaining storyline.
I had high hopes for this book based on the review I read. It seemed right up my alley, being historical fiction added with the mystical aspect of the main character, Sarah's gift. However, I don't think the author developed her characters deeply enough for me. She took the characters in the book from event to event without much depth. However, I felt deeply sorry for Sarah's assault and admired Hixson's devotion to her throughout the story.

This was a freebie read and not something I would have picked up normally. I'm not finishing this mainly because I've gotten bored with it. Slow moving and a bit odd with the civil war/paranormal angle. DNF
Very fast read, easy and fun. A little bit too pat to be believable, but the characters are incredibly likeable - almost too much so. Still, it was light, fun, and definitely a "good mood" read which was just the ticket for me at the time I read the book.
This started out a pretty good book. There was some mention of past tragedies and then it moved on. When every page seemed to bring a new horror, I decided that reading this book was no longer enjoyable.
