About the author

Richard Scott Prather was an American mystery novelist, best known for creating the "Shell Scott" series. He also wrote under the pseudonyms David Knight and Douglas Ring.

Prather was born in Santa Ana, California. He served in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II. In 1945 year he married Tina Hager and began working as a civilian chief clerk of surplus property at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California. He left that job to become a full-time writer in 1949. The first Shell Scott mystery, 'Case of the Vanishing Beauty' was published in 1950. It would be the start of a long series that numbered more than three dozen titles featuring the Shell Scott character.

Prather had a disagreement with his publisher in the 1970s and sued them in 1975. He gave up writing for several years and grew avocados. However in 1986 he returned with 'The Amber Effect'. Prather's final book, 'Shellshock', was published in hardcover in 1987 by Tor Books.

At the time of his death in 2007, he had completed his final Shell Scott Mystery novel, 'The Death Gods'. It was published October 2011 by Pendleton Artists.

Prather served twice on the Board of Directors of the Mystery Writers of America. Additionally Prather received the Shamus Award, "The Eye" (Lifetime achievment award) in 1986.

Like Hammett’s Red Harvest and Latimer’s Solomon’s Vineyard, Prather’s Too Many Crooks (originally Ride a High Horse) features a town owned lock stock and barrel by the mob right down to every corrupt police officer and lawyer. The rest of the townsfolk are too beaten down or vowed to say a word. This is one of the most hardboiled of Prather’s Shell Scott series and is set in an idyllic California beach town.

Scott’s friend Dane calls him in when a syndicate is forcing everyone to sell their beachfront land at sharply discounted prices. Of course, the offer is made ever so sweetly but backed up by tough men in the street and implied threats to everyone’s personal safety and that of their wife and kids. The town is almost all sewed up and there are just a few holdouts.

Scott’s Tin badge is garbage here and he’s told to go home in rather clear terms. But more than in any other Scott novel, it’s all too clear he’s on his own and anything and everyone will be pinned on him. And even the few Allies Scott has seem to be disappearing quickly. He can count his allies on half a hand. There’s Dane. Theres Clyde Baron, maybe. There’s Lilith the rich girl who might stick around it might disappear for another decade if she’s tired of skinny dipping. Then, there’s the cub reporter Betty who alone believes in Scott even with an all points bulletin out for him as a cop-killer.

Prather does a great job of showing how alone Scott is and what it’s like when he can’t count on the law to back him. He’s got his wits and his .38 and not much else. No police report agrees with what Scott sees and no newspaper will print what he knows to be the truth. This is not the lightweight banter one associates with the Shell Scott franchise.

One of the best Shell Scott books I've read. This rates a 4.5 on the crime book scale. The only thing that makes this less than a perfect crime novel—and maybe this true of all the Shell Scott novels—is the lack of a truly evil femme fatale. There's one in this book, but for all her evil she comes across as somewhat sympathetic—always a pawn, never the mastermind. Prather just couldn't seem to find it in him to write a truly evil woman character.

Πολύ καλογραμμένη ιστορία, ενδιαφέρουσα και όχι πολυφορεμενη πλοκή, γρήγορος ρυθμός και άφθονη δράση όπως πρέπει να εχει ένα hardboiled μυθιστόρημα. Τα plot twist μη αναμενόμενα αλλά όχι τραβηγμένα.
Υπάρχουν κάποιες μικρές ευκολίες προς το τέλος του βιβλίου χωρίς όμως να χαλάνε τη συνολική εικόνα.
Από τις καλύτερες ιστορίες του Σκοτ και του γνωστού μόνο από τα ΒΙΠΕΡ και τις εκδόσεις του Βήματος πολυγραφοτατου Πραιηδερ.

This is a terrific book of corruption and deception woven into a very tight novel. Hero Shell Scott starts off to help a friends and the story builds and builds and builds to a very exciting and nail biting ending that seems to have turned against Scott. There is a grand slam twist that will not be expected and so much else shoved into 157 pages. It's hard not to finish this book and not feel like you've been through a thrill ride.

Helping the plot is the excellent handling of characters. There is a ton going on and some readers might get lost involving certain intricacies, yet the characters stand out. The setting is imperative to the whole book and Prather does an excellent job of writing for reader understanding.

This a bit of the sexual stuff in here, too, but is also essential to the story.

Bottom line: i recommend this book: ten out of ten points.

A teď něco trochu jiného. Jasně, další Shell Scott, ale tentokrát víc navážno. Taková Rudá žeň alá Richard S. Prather. Hrdina přijíždí do města, které obsadili gangsteři a nutí obyvatele, aby jim prodali nemovitosti. A jelikož je jeden z těch obyvatel Scottův kamarád, rozhodne se s tím něco udělat. Jenže jak si poradit, když je proti němu celé město, včetně policie?

Shell Scott je zvyklý jet to s policií na férovku, ovšem tady to nezabírá a začíná mu být jasné, že po dobrém to nepůjde. A začne přituhovat. Kámoše najde mrtvého, brzo následuje přestřelka a s ní ještě větší problémy – chlápek, kterého Scott sejme, je to totiž policajt. Z detektiva se tím pádem stává zabiják policistů a okamžitě štvanec. Smyčka kolem něj se stahuje a přestává to být sranda.

Základní příběh je dost jednoduchý a řešení až laciné… ale co funguje, je to, jak Prather celou situaci buduje, jak graduje akci a s jako rozkoší uzavírá hrdinovi další a další dveře přímo před nosem. Poslední třetina knihy je vlastně jen jedna dlouhá thrillerová sekvence, zachycující hrdinův únik před mizery, který končí jeho uvězněním. Což ano, patří k atributům žánru, ale tady to jde opravdu až na kost. Padouši se z něj snaží vymlátit informace prostřednictvím gumové hadice. Zrubaný hrdina se pokusí o útěk. Marně. Další nakládačka. Plánování finty. Bez úspěchu. Další nakládačka. Poslední šance… a zhasnutá dřív, než k ní vůbec dojde. Shell Scott postupně ustupuje ze všech svých pozic, podepisuje a přiznává… a i když pořád hledá možnosti, jak se z toho dostat, je čím dál jasnější, že tohle může skončit jenom jeho smrtí.

Jo, víte, ze to hrdina rozdýchá (už jen na základě toho, že tohle je teprve jedenáctá kniha ze čtyřiceti dvou), ale stejně to to tlačené až totálně na dřeň, až i sám zkušený čtenář začíná pochybovat. Richard S. Prather má prostě rád, když plány nevycházejí. Někdy je to legrační, někdy drsné - ale vždycky to funguje.

The last book of the year 2022 is a 70 yo paperback PI gumshoe yarn.
What a hoot reading the old dialogue around a slam bang PI versus cop who-don-it. Our hero drives a Cadillac convertible with standard shift. He has a way with women and guns.
Someone is trying to buy all the shore front property in a seacoast town. Fists fly, guns roar, cops are dirty and modern technology is the Pay Phone. There is more story & action in this 157 pages than in modern books twice the length. Fast, fun and recommended if you can find it.

Το βιβλίο του Richard S. Prather είναι μια αστυνομική νουβέλα με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον. Η πλοκή περιστρέφεται γύρω από μια μυστηριώδη εταιρεία με άγνωστο ιδιοκτήτη, η οποία με νόμιμους, αλλά κυρίως παράνομους τρόπους, προσπαθεί να αγοράσει όλες τις ιδιοκτησίες που έχουν πρόσβαση στην παραλία μιας πόλης, με απώτερο σκοπό το κέρδος.
Ο συγγραφέας θέλει να αναδείξει τη διαφθορά και την απληστία που κρύβεται πίσω από μεγάλες επιχειρηματικές συμφωνίες. Το νόημα του βιβλίου είναι μια κριτική στο πώς το χρήμα μπορεί να διαφθείρει ανθρώπους και θεσμούς, ωθώντας τους σε παράνομες πράξεις. Εμπλέκονται αστυνόμοι, μπράβοι, μέλη του διοικητικού συμβουλίου και πολλοί άλλοι, σε ένα δίκτυο διαπλοκής.
Το ύφος γραφής είναι γρήγορο, γεμάτο δράση, αγωνία και μπόλικο ξύλο. Ο Σελ Σκοτ δέχεται άπειρο ξύλο σε όλη τη διάρκεια της ιστορίας, κάτι που προσθέτει μια δόση χιούμορ, αλλά και ρεαλισμού στο σκληρό κόσμο της νουβέλας. Η αφήγηση είναι απολαυστική και σε κρατάει σε εγρήγορση.
Ο Σελ Σκοτ είναι ο κλασικός σκληροτράχηλος ντετέκτιβ, που παρά το ξύλο που τρώει, παραμένει αποφασισμένος να βρει την αλήθεια. Είναι ένα βιβλίο που προσφέρει μια ευχάριστη και ενδιαφέρουσα αστυνομική νουβέλα, με έναν γοητευτικό πρωταγωνιστή και μια καλή πλοκή. Παρά το γεγονός ότι ορισμένες ανατροπές είναι προβλέψιμες και το ξύλο είναι υπερβολικό, η συνολική εμπειρία είναι καλή.

This was the second Shell I've read (although the first, I think chronologically) where he was on the run from cops. This time because the cops in a small town he was called to by an old friend to solve a gangster matter (they were buying up all the property in a seaside town, often through strongarm measures, with the idea of later changing the city's zoning to make it a commercial vacation goldmine) were actually in bed with the gangsters. I spent most of the novel wondering why he didn't just call in the feds, but maybe that wasn't a thing in the 50s (I think it was though). Nothing particularly memorably about this Shell.
