Hip Expectations is a practical, humorous guide for patients about to have a hip replacement, or for people about to care for someone when they get home. Written by Mr Jonathan Hull MD FRCS (ORTH) Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who, after many years of performing the operation, found himself as the patient about to receive the same treatment, wrote this guide to be as informative as it is down to earth.
"It encompasses all of the things that caused me to reach for Google at 4am when the hip pain had woken me in my pre-op weeks and months, and the little things I worried about post-op...The sort of practical, down-to-earth, advice that this book contains, is as relevant to a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery as it is to the non-medical patient." Mr Henry Tilney MD FRCS, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and hip replacement patient
This is a short book published in 2022 about the author's hip replacement surgery in Nov 2021. The author is a British orthopedic surgeon who did plenty of hip replacements himself, and describes the process from the inside AND the outside, which is great. It is from the UK perspective so much of the logistics aren't applicable elsewhere, but presumably much of the process and the technology is similar. In particular his guidance about the recovery process and the post-op process should be very valuable to the patient.
"Don't try and feed the dog, empty the dishwasher, do the washing up or even make a cup of coffee for yourself the first week. I did all of those, or started to, and quite rightly got spanked for it."
I am considering hip surgery and have read the shiny brochures from medical centers. Hip Expectations is a very short book (about 60 pages) but it answers a lot of concerns I had succinctly. The author has an engaging humorous style and he made me laugh a few times.
The only caveat is that he is in the British NHS system and a few things do not apply to the hospital experience you may have if you live in the USA like me but that did nothing to lessen the usefulness of this book.
