Always have to give the Bible five stars--it really is an amazing book. As for this translation, I really enjoyed it. The TNIV has the feel and readability of the NIV, although the wordings more frequently diverge from traditional phrasing to fresh renditions. One of the most notable changes is the use of gender-inclusive language where appropriate. My impression is that the TNIV is more judicious in making these changes than the NRSV, which seems to change almost everything, even when it seems highly likely that the male gender was intended. (I'm thinking especially here of Proverbs, where the NRSV changes "my son" to "my child", even though the author probably would have been writing to a son. The TNIV keeps it as "my son".) The other big improvement the TNIV makes over the NIV is the ample use of footnotes to indicate possible alternate translations or areas of uncertainty. I have greatly appreciated these notes in the NRSV, and was happy to see the TNIV adopt them as well.

All in all, I think this is a great translation for reading and casual Bible study. A more formal translation, like the NRSV, might be best for intensive Bible study, but the TNIV makes a great option for use as a general purpose translation and I'll be using it as such for myself.

This is an amazing presentation of the Bible. It is easy to read because verse and chapter markers have been eliminated. Also, the text is not in columns, like most Bibles - rather, it reads all the way across the page in normal paragraph form (except for songs/poetry, which are centered in the middle and look like lyrics should.)

Besides all that, the books are arranged in a sensible order (chronologically in the order that they were written, for the most part) and the introductions to each book are very insightful.

If you have a hard time getting into reading the Bible, but would like to stay with a fairly well-known and literal translation (as opposed to paraphrases like The Message) then this is the Bible for you! They are available for less than $10 at IBS Direct.com.

I've never read through the Bible so quickly. The language in this flows so well and has been adapted to today's dialect so well that I simple burned through the pages, reading chapter after chapter in a short span of time.

While I used to think the KJV and NKJV are the ONLY versions to read, this helped me see the greivous error of my way. Not only is it nice to have the current language, but it is good to read the different interpretations of the original text. In translations, nuances are always lost, so it helps to read the different takes on the same writings.

This is a great version of the Bible: easy to read, understand, and digest.

Yes, I read the Bible cover to cover from January to March. And since I'm completely unqualified to rate or review the Bible, I'll leave it at that. But I would recommend reading the Bible to anyone.

2025 update - first time through from start to finish. Revelation is always a rousing finish to the epic pilgrimage through the Bible.

This is a terrific narrative Bible. It's organized as a book, reading left to right without the typical center margin with 2 columns. The opening of each Book has a story summary with specifics on time period. Highly recommend.

My church is using this guide to read the entire Bible in one year. I love the thought of this, of doing it together as a congregation, but in practice I haven't kept with it. I know I could jump back in, so I've left this book on my Currently Reading shelf, but I don't think it is going to happen right now, and I've finally told myself that this is ok. This doesn't mean that I've given up on reading the Bible! It just means that I'm not actively working to read the entire book (books, really) by the end of the year.

As I said below, I don't feel that I can rate the Bible. (October 17, 2013)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the Year of the Bible reading program at our church, I decided to switch to this translation from my NRSV because I find this to be a bit more readable. Here's a flow chart of my interpretation of translations and readability from what I find to be harder to read older English to modern colloquial English.
OLDER: King James - NRSV - TNIV - The Message: COLLOQUIAL
The Bible is the one book that I've read that I will not rate. I feel like giving it 5 stars seems like I'm missing the many complexities within it that need to be wrestled with, whereas any lower rating seems almost sacrilege. I know some people rate the Bible based on their preference in translation, but for me that depends on my mood and why I'm reading (study, prayer, etc.). (June 20, 2013)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I set out to read this cover-to-cover in one year, but gave up. So, though I've read much of this translation, I didn't read the whole thing. I am now starting to do a Year of the Bible curriculum with my church using the NRSV Bible. (2012)

I like the note taking space, accordion pockets, and the size (not huge, but small enough to fit in a small pack). I have only seen this type of bible in tniv and rarely niv. I am not attached to any particular version but I will defend the tniv from all the crap it is getting.

Sometimes when I preach I use the tniv because the way it is translated is easier to communicate the point of the verse to the largest audience possible (most often in regards to differences in gender).

If I don't have the time in that particular sermon to cover the use of a specific gender in the text and how that verse refers to the other gender, then I go here.

Most often I use it when the scriptures uses "man" in reference to "humanity" in a context that is especially confusing (i.e. Eph. 2:14 and following).

I love this little Bible. My sister gave it to me so I could have one in my purse to take to church and everywhere with me. It's the perfect size and the magnet leather latch helps keep it closed so it doesn't get beat up from lying open in my purse. I put it in an inside pocket that happens to be the perfect size, and I learned to put it there with the unbound side away from the "mangler zone" in the middle of the purse so the page corners don't get beat up. So far it is holding up well.

Now I can have my giant print Bible at home (LOVE giant print!), and also this compact version to read on BART, when I'm early for work, or anywhere I have to sit and wait a bit and have a few minutes to occupy myself. The print is small but not impossibly so. It's still quite readable.

Speaking as one who received this as a gift -- it's the perfect gift!

I read this version of the Bible in conjunction with my reading, studying, and applying the teachings of the Book of Proverbs. I prefer the TNIV to the traditional NIV because they have updated the language (intentionally made it inclusive and more reflective of late 20th century speech patterns). As a result it is easier to read and understand than the more academic and sometimes wooded translation of the NRSV; but because the commentary I was using was based on the NRSV, there were some interesting variations on translations of some proverbs that altered significantly the meaning of the proverb being studied. The experience was more enriching than problematic, so if one has the time I would recommend reading Proverbs in two or more translations and ponder the richness of the meaning of these pearls of wisdom.

The gender-sensitive rendering of the language merely demonstrates how far the church will go to accommodate a world that rejects it. It is unfortunate that such contemporary sensitivities have convinced a publisher to modify the language. Having to carve out a reference to the female gender wherever the masculine word (such as "mankind" or "brethren") was understood in generations past to include the female gender among the collective, is just plain touchy. Trying to equalize the culture's sensitivity about the genders by revising the language is simply a compromise that the church should have avoided.

This is basically the New Testament of the Bible in The New International Version. It is fairly large print, like it is written for old people. The Manga itself is fairly short and feels like it should have been a book within itself. I really liked the artwork and the portrayal of Jesus. It is not necessarily portrayed in the merry way many would like the bible to be portrayed. It can be quite dark, however it still is very scripturally accurate so it is open to the artists interpretation. When Jesus goes into the temple to kick out the money changers he literally kicks ass manga style. Worth a read for any comic book enthusiast or Christian looking for a more visual feel to the bible.

This is the bible I am currently reading the most. It was a gift last year for my birthday. The TNIV - Today’s New International Version It has some great study notes and like the Everyman’s devotional it is focused on men and what men need. The historical notes, and ‘myths’ features focus on area’s like: Fulfillment, Sex, Work, Marriage, Pride, Pornography, Anger, Faith, Money, Family and Church. There are also ‘downshifts’ little asides that ask probing questions based on the passages read. There are also biography’s of key biblical man throughout the book. The single column layout makes it a nice easy to read bible.

I've read through the Bible several times, but never in one year. I used the Book-at-a-Time Bible Reading Plan from Discipleship Journal (www.discipleshipjournal.com). The plan had me daily read about 3 chapters from one book in the Bible and then a chapter of a Psalm or Proverb. It allowed one day for reflection which was nice to take a break or get caught up. I found the pace easy to keep up with and was glad I did it.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Bible. I chose to read through this translation over the past six months since my parents bought it for me on Christmas 2005. The text is highly readable and flows well, but I don't like some of the gender neutrality where it actually matters (and I'm not talking about the dear brothers and sisters passages). Other than that, I prefer a more word for word translation like the ESV. But overall, I liked this and it was very beneficial to read.

What more can be said?

If you don't have a TNIV yet, I'd recommend going out and buying one right away. The TNIV gets closer to the original meaning of the text while remaining readable to modern English-speakers. I love this particular edition because it comes in pretty colors (mine is sky-blue, cream, and camel).

There is so much to say about this book, that it's amazing. This is the only book that I have ever highlighted in. I love to read parts of it over and over again, not caring if it's repetitive. This is the book I turn to if I have questions, or if I'm just bored and want something to do. I'm more likely to read this book than any other

I felt like I needed to make it all the way through The Good Book and listening in the car helped me meet the goal. This version has a large cast reading as well as background music and sound effects. It even kept me engaged through the begats. In the New Testament, this version does break out into praise songs at jarring times, but overall, I enjoyed this arrangement.

What a fantastic production. In my experience it is the first of it's kind and since 2008 there have been a few attempts to recreate it but still nothing quite like it. Granted, the translation isn't my favorite but this approach at the rich, dramatic and life-giving texts of Scripture is a must have.

1.5. Slightly underwhelming, especially since the parts I was most excited to hear ended up being so short. There were parts I enjoyed a lot, but overall it was just okay. Though, it would be interesting to read it with historical context.
