Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan.

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller) was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, the murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been performed in the West End of London since 1952. A writer during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction", Christie has been called the "Queen of Crime". She also wrote six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to literature. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, her novels having sold more than two billion copies.

This best-selling author of all time wrote 66 crime novels and story collections, fourteen plays, and six novels under a pseudonym in romance. Her books sold more than a billion copies in the English language and a billion in translation. According to Index Translationum, people translated her works into 103 languages at least, the most for an individual author. Of the most enduring figures in crime literature, she created Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. She atuhored The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the history of modern theater.

First published in 1934 it is a delightful collection of Twelve short stories. The very first one- The Listerdale mystery will leave you happy and on a positive note. Great beginning to the collection. There is also James Bond featuring in one of the stories, even though he has not to do anything with the other flamboyant Bond

I love The Listerdale Mystery and I think that this is an excellent collection of Agatha Christie's stand-alone shorts. And by stand-alone, I mean that none of her famous detectives appear in any of these. As always, there are links to each story that lead to a slightly longer review for anyone who is interested in a particular short.

The Listerdale Mystery
The widowed Mrs. St. Vincent lives with her grown son and daughter in a boarding house. They used to have a grand manor but now they live in genteel poverty after her husband's poor speculation left them with nothing. At her wit's end and with nothing left to lose, she contacts a house agent that is advertising a rental that is too good to be true, and she actually gets it.
It even comes with a near-perfect butler, Quentin, to take care of the daily hassles.




Her son, Rupert, is working but not making enough yet to support his mother and sister. And her daughter, Barbara, is hoping to marry the young man she met while on a trip to Egypt with her cousins, but she's afraid if he sees her in such diminished circumstances it might make him look at her differently. So, this house is an answer to her mother's prayers.

Philomel Cottage
Things go tits up quickly due to a hasty marriage but I love that this time around our heroine outsmarts her Bluebeard with her wits, instead of waiting for a man to rescue her.
Alix Martin comes into a bit of money and a whirlwind romance at the same time.
Her long-time man-friend, Dick, is acting weird after she inherits a bit of cash from a relative and they have a falling out.
Meanwhile, she runs into the handsome Geral and they fall in love and get married, against Dick's warnings that she doesn't know him well enough.



The Girl in the Train
Do you believe in love at first sight?
After too many late nights spent on the town, George Rowland gets fired and cut off by his wealthy uncle. He decides to hop on a train and take a trip to Rowland Castle in the hopes that, even though he only shares a last name, they will somehow greet him with open arms.
You can clearly see why his uncle tossed him out.



Sing a Song of Sixpence
So 10 years ago on a boat trip, the now retired barrister Sir Edward Palliser met and made love to the 17 year old Magdalen Vaughan. He was nearing 60 at the time of their affair and was enchanted by her eagerness and hero worship of him.
Ye gods, Agatha!



Scrape away the dirty old man and it's a good mystery.

The Manhood of Edward Robinson<
A nice young man who is henpecked by his fiancee has the adventure of a lifetime.
And it changes his outlook on the world.



Accident
An overzealous cop pokes his nose in the wrong spot.



This was another really fun stand-alone that I would highly recommend as one of the better examples of Christie's early work in short story form.

Jane in Search of a Job
Princess swap!
Sort of.
A young woman (Jane) who needs some money answers and an advertisement looking for someone who fits her description that can speak French. As a reader, we know this is ALWAYS a bad idea, but our heroine has yet to figure that out.



A Fruitful Sunday
Meh.
A couple on a date pulls off the side of the road and end up buying a basket of fruit. Inside they find a ruby necklace. They also find a newspaper and read about a big jewel robbery
Now they've got to decide what to do with it.



Mr Eastwood's Adventure aka The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl
Anthony Eastwood has writer's block.
His (hopefully) soon-to-be-written story The Mystery of the Second Cucumber is right there...on the tip of his typewriter!
His writer's block is interrupted when he gets a phone call from a desperate-sounding woman who mistakes him for someone called Conrad Fleckman, and then begs him to meet her at a secret location.
LIFE ANd DEATH!
What the hell, it's not like he's doing anything anyway, right?



The Golden Ball
A woman comes up with an elaborate plan to find a man who is useful in a crisis.
I'm not saying you should rely on a dude to protect you, but I have to admit that I probably wouldn't think much of my husband if he didn't jump up and tell me to stay in the bedroom while he checks out the weird noise in the middle of the night.
Now, will I actually stay in the bedroom or am I tiptoeing down the steps behind him with a baseball bat?
Silly man. I'm not going to let the weird noise eat him.



The Rajah's Emerald
1st appearance of James Bond!
But not that James Bond.
No, years before Ian Flemming gave the world an iconic super spy, Agatha Christie gave us a disgruntled young man who lucked into an adventure by picking up the wrong shorts.



Swan Song
A famous opera singer gets her revenge.
It's one of those stories that men would do well to pay attention to, as it shows how long a woman will wait to get payback.
Sleep with one eye open, sir.

Highly enjoyable short stories collection which features 12 of Christie’s less known tales, though some were adapted for TV in the early 1980’s.

They’re all quite humorous, I found The Girl in the Train and A Fruitful Sunday to be my favourites.

Interestingly the main character in The Rajah's Emerald was called James Bond, I was half expecting him to be a secret agent!

A fine collection of Christie shorts, not featuring any of her famous sleuths. I absolutely loved this collection.

The best story in the collection according to me is Philomel Cottage - a real gem of suspense. I always wonder why Hitchcock did not see it. The way Alix Martin's world slowly unravels as discovers an unpalatable truth and the subsequent race to save herself had me biting my nails when I first read it.

The next best for me is The Golden Ball - how a young man grabs "the golden ball of chance" finally after letting it go many a time. This story actually reminded me a lot of Wodehouse.

All the others are nice and lighthearted (except for Accident and Swan Song). Oh, and one more thing - The Girl in the Train would make a fantastic Bollywood movie. Directors, please note.

Esta novela es otra muestra del gran talento que tenía Agatha Christie para invertar historias. Este es un libro que recopila 10 relatos, unos me han gustado más que otros, pero de gran calidad.

Entre los que más me han gustado están; Un cantar por seis peniques y El canto del cisne. Esos siguen siendo mis favoritos a pesar de que es una relectura, mis gustos no han cambiado con los años.

The Listerdale Mystery gathers 12 short stories by Agatha Christie that were first published in various detective or fiction magazines from 1924-1926. The stories were gathered into book form under the title The Listerdale Mystery in 1934. The stories were not published in the US until much later in two separate story collections, The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories (1948) and The Golden Ball and Other Stories (1971).

The best known story in the collection is Philomel Cottage. Early in Christie's career (before WW II), this story was the most adapted/most popular of her short stories. Philomel Cottage was made into a stage play, radio drama and movies. The play and at least 3 movie versions (1937, 1947 and 1958). The play and movies changed the title to Love From a Stranger. It was also adapted for the radio mystery program Suspense at least 3 times in 1942, 1943 and 1946. In January 2002, BBC4 Radio presented a "modernized'' version of the story.

The Listerdale Mystery - first published in The Grand Magazine in December 1925. The story was first published in the US in 1971 as part of The Golden Ball and Other Stories. An upper class family that has fallen down on their luck rents a very nice town house for next to nothing...but is there something sinister going on?

Philomel Cottage - An heiress marries in haste, and comes to wonder how well she really knows her husband. Is he plotting? First published in The Grand Magazine in 1924. It was later included in The Listerdale Mystery (UK) and The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories in 1948 (US). It was adapted for radio 3 times for the OTR show Suspense (1924. 1943 and 1946), and once by BBC4 Radio in 2002 (modernized version). It has also been adapted for the stage (1936, titled Love from a Stranger), television (Fireside Theatre, 1950) and film (1947 in the US, titled A Stranger Walked In). The stage play (titled Love from a Stranger) was adapted for film and television four times (1938, 1947 and 1958 and once for West German television in 1957) It is one of Christie's most adapted short stories.

The Girl in the Train - first published in The Grand Magazine in February 1924. First published in the US in The Golden Ball and Other stories. George Rowland is a bit lazy and gets into a row with his uncle. He sets out on a journey to a town he finds in a tourist book -- Rowland's Castle. But....he finds a bit of an adventure instead! Adapted for television in 1982 for The Agatha Christie Hour (episode 3).

Sing a Song of Sixpence - This story was first published in 1929 in Holly Leaves, the annual Christmas special of Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. First published in the US in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in 1947, it also appeared in The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories (1948). I didn't find any radio or television adaptations of this story.

The Manhood of Edward Robinson - An impetuous man who feels a bit controlled by his fiance, Maud, wins $500 in a contest on goes on a bit of an unexpected adventure. This story was first published in The Grand Magazine in December 1924 in the UK. The story was not published in the US until The Golden Ball and Other Stories in 1971. This story was adapted for television in 1982 for The Agatha Christie Hour (episode 10)

Accident - A man suspects a wife may be plotting to poison her husband. This story was first published in 1929 in the Sunday Dispatch under the title, The Uncrossed Path. In March 1943, Accident was published in Ellery Queen Magazine in the US. It was later published again in the US in 1948 (The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories). It was adapted once into a stage play titled Tea for Three in 1939.

Jane in Search of a Job - Jane Cleveland needs a job. She sees an interesting advert, and ends up on quite the adventure! First published in the UK in The Grand Magazine in August 1924, this story was not published in the US until 1971 when it was included in The Golden Ball and Other Stories. It was adapted for television in 1982 for The Agatha Christie Hour (episode 9). Some changes were made to the story, but the changes are minor.

A Fruitful Sunday - A Housemaid on her Sunday off is tempted to make a poor decision. This story was first published in the Daily Mail in August 1928. It was not published in the US until 1971 when it was included in The Golden Ball and Other Stories. No adaptations for radio or television for this story were found.

Mr. Eastwood's Adventure - This story was first published as The Mystery of the Second Cucumber in The Novel Magazine, 1924. It was later included in this story collection with the title Mr. Eastwood's Adventure, and The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories (1948) with yet another title change - The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl. I found no adaptations of this story.

The Golden Ball - After being fired by his wealthy uncle for being less than dependable, George Dundas meets a very interesting society girl who asks him to marry her, leading to a bizarre chain of events. This story was first published under the title Playing The Innocent in the Daily Mail in August 1929. No radio adaptations of this story were found. It was adapted for television by NBC in 1950 (Fireside Theatre Season 2 episode 18). I could not find video anywhere of this episode.

The Rajah's Emerald - James Bond travels to the beach with his girlfriend, but feels slighted by her. A rash decision leads to unexpected events. First published in Red Magazine in July 1926 in the UK. Not published in the US until The Golden Ball and Other Stories in 1971. I found no radio or film adaptations for this story.

Swan Song - An opera star agrees to a private performance, and gives the ultimate Swan Song. This story was first published in The Grand Magazine in September 1926 (UK). It was not published in the US until 1971 (The Golden Ball and Other Stories). This story has never been adapted for television. BBC4 Radio did a dramatization of this story in the early 2000s, but it was "modernized'' with major changes to the plot and characters.

I enjoyed all of these stories! I couldn't find a copy of The Listerdale Mystery itself, so listened to these stories from two audio books - The Golden Ball and Other Stories and The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories, both from HarperAudio. Hugh Fraser narrated. I like Fraser as a narrator. He reads at a steady pace and does a very good job of voice acting.

Very enjoyable! This was my first read for all of these tales. Agatha Christie has been my favorite author since I was 9 years old, but I always stuck to her novels and never read her short stories. So much fun to discover so many new-to-me tales from my favorite writer!

Βέβαια, όταν μια συλλογή φέρει την υπογραφή της Agatha Christie, τα πράγματα είναι λιγάκι διαφορετικά και οι όποιες ενστάσεις που μπορεί να έχω απέναντι στο είδος εξαλείφονται. Αυτή η συλλογή διηγημάτων, λοιπόν, πρωτοεκδόθηκε το 1934 και περιλαμβάνει δώδεκα μοναδικά διηγήματα, το καθένα από αυτά με την ολόδική του ταυτότητα, μα και με το προσωπικό του ύφος και χαρακτήρα -ενώ πολλά από αυτά μεταφέρθηκαν και στη μικρή οθόνη τα χρόνια που ακολούθησαν και πιο συγκεκριμένα στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του '80.

Φυσικά, δεν μπορώ να ισχυριστώ πως όλες οι ιστορίες μού άρεσαν εξίσου, αλλά δεν υπήρξε και κάποια που να μου πέρασε αδιάφορη. Όπως προανέφερα, η κάθε μία έχει ξεχωριστό ύφος και χαρακτήρα, με ορισμένες από αυτές να διαθέτουν μια πιο μυστηριακή αισθητική, από κάποιες άλλες που φαντάζουν κάπως πιο γήινες, θα τολμούσα να πω, οπότε και εξετάζονται μέσα από διαφορετικά πρίσματα. Ωστόσο, στο σύνολό τους, διαθέτουν όλα τα απαραίτητα συστατικά για να σου κρατήσουν αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον, προσπαθώντας να δώσεις σε κάθε μία από αυτές τις απαντήσεις που απαιτούνται προκειμένου να φτάσεις στην αλήθεια που αποκαλύπτει τα πάντα.

Το κάθε ένα στοιχείο από αυτά και όλα μαζί ως ένα σύνολο, δημιουργούν ένα έργο που μπορεί να ικανοποιήσει ακόμα και τους πιο απαιτητικούς αναγνώστες του είδους, μα και να καλύψουν ένα πολύ μεγάλα φάσμα γούστων και προτιμήσεων χωρίς ν' αφήσουν κανέναν παραπονεμένο.

جريمة على الشاطئ
انه المثلث الأبدي كما يصفه هيركيول بوارو، المثلث الذي لا ينتج عن خيرا أبدا. انه الزوجان والعشيق، والذي دوما ما ينتهي الأمر بحدوث جريمة قتل. ترى من سيكون القاتل والقتيل في هذا المثلث المعتاد لدى أجاثا كريستي. هذة ستدهشكم حقا!

الزائر الغريب
هذة بالنسبة لي كانت أجملهم على الإطلاق، ربما أقصرهم حجما ولكن بالأحرى أقواهم مغزى وحبكة. عليك دوما أن تتوخى الحذر ايا كان موقفك يا عزيزي.

3.5 stars rounded down. I liked these entertaining stories, ranging from very clever to somewhat predictable. Even though I prefer Agatha Christie's novels, this was on the whole a very satisfying read.

2018's Around the year in 52 books: #51, Short story collection

Esta es una colección de cuentos que no son de asesinato, son mas de temas cotidianos que involucran algún tipo de misterio. Esta es una colección que a mi entender ha envejecido, los temas y misterios que plantea, en su mayoría, son muy ingenuos y hasta cierto punto inverosímiles. Se nota que son de otra época.

Siempre he dicho que los cuentos nunca fue la fortaleza de Christie, por eso nunca recomiendo empezar con ellos si no has leído sus novelas.

En esta colección hay varias historias que también se encuentran en Testigo de cargo. Mis favoritas son esas que están repetidas: Villa Ruiseñor y Accidente.

I do like that the stories were unpredictable - you don't know what kind of crime or mystery will be committed (unlike most of Christie's novels about murder), and you don't know whose perspective you're getting - the criminal, the sleuth, the hero - without Poirot or Miss Marple to set the stage. It's like a collection of short puzzles - not all super strong, but all fun.

This book is the collection of 12 short stories. I liked some of the stories. They had a good deal of mystery. Some were very funny and some were predictable. Overall I liked this book. I love mystery novels of Agatha Christie. She is one of the best mystery writers in the 1900's. I enjoy reading her books because most of the time its really hard to predict the ending.

This is a great collection of short mysteries. It is filled with misunderstandings, secrets, intrigue and even some espionage. It seems to focus on extraordinary things happened to ordinary people, which I really loved. I think the Listerdale mystery was my favorite story in this bunch and had the best and quite surprising ending. I also loved the story with the "Marquess". Even though Miss Marple and Poirot were absent, these were great stories by AC. She has a wonderful talent for short story writing and includes as many twists and turns as possible!

The audiobook for this novel was great and really brought life to each character.

Todo genial, muy entretenido, hasta que en la página 66 un señor decrépito habla de lo mucho que le gustó follarse a una cría (no especifica si mayor o menor de edad pero me da igual, el asco que me ha producido es el mismo).

Libros recomendados colección Agatha Christie. Policíaca, misterio, relatos breves…
Si hago una reseña por libro… igual me tiro un mes; así que todos de golpe ;)
Descubrí a esta autora prolífica, inteligente y misteriosa de pequeña; pero fue cuando trabajaba fuera de casa, para otros, cuando me llevaba libros para leer en la hora de descanso. Y fui, con la ayuda de los míos, completando la colección.
Me falta algo; pero posterior a su muerte y de pseudónimo, aunque creo que lo tengo todo, ya ni lo sé, con tantos libros… En fin…
Si algo tenía esta mujer era inteligencia (dicen que gracias a sus estudios se dieron con soluciones para algunos casos) y una narrativa adictiva y en realidad fácil de leer. Yo debo confesar que con mi 6º sentido, al conocerla y leerla constantemente, la fui ‘’pillando’’; aunque a veces me daba la vuelta…
Nos encontramos que entre todos los años de escritura, las palabras se endurecen y actualizan; pero la educación, así como la miseria anímica humana están presentes en sus libros, que siempre nos recuerdan las diferentes clases sociales…
Se supone que todo el mundo, al menos, la conoce, o se hace una idea: poco puedo aportar, aparte de recomendarla si no la has leído y te gustan el asesinato, el misterio, la acción, y detectives que usan sus células grises y su experiencia con la naturaleza humana…
Te encontrarás con relatos breves que hacen libros, y alguna historia puntual de fantasmas…
Algunos escritores suelen tocar siempre el mismo tema, más o menos, y no está mal; pero te encuentras con que aunque sean tus escritores favoritos: el escenario es el mismo… por eso te familiarizas.

Por cierto, que también hemos disfrutado de las series varias de televisión y películas… y de obras de teatro basadas en sus libros, y me lo he pasado muy bien, la verdad. En una ocasión, sentada en 1º fila, ‘’el malo’’, al acabar la función dijo (a todos; pero mirándome a mí :-0) que si alguien se chivaba del final de la obra iría a por esa persona… Por supuesto, yo le hice la señal de cremallera en boca ;)

3.5 stars. The duds in this collection dragged the score down slightly. There are a lot of great stories here, including the namesake The Listerdale Mystery, Philomel Cottage and Accident. I particularly appreciated the grumpy disposition of James Bond (before there was the James Bond, there was Agatha Christie’s) on a vacation from hell in The Rajah’s Emerald!

This is a standard Christie short story collection. Not a favourite, but perfectly fine. I will say, it's one of the collections with less focus on detective stories, so if you like a more traditional murder mystery story, this isn't the collection I'd choose.

Πρόκειται για μια συλλογή δώδεκα διηγημάτων με μυστηριώδεις εξαφανίσεις, αυτοκρατορικούς γάμους, δηλητηριάσεις, κλοπές κοσμημάτων, διασκεδαστικά στοιχήματα παρανομίας, πριγκιπικές απαγωγές, διαφημιστικά κόλπα κ. ά. Μια ξεπεσμένη αριστοκράτισσα («Το είδος μας πεθαίνει, όμως στηρίζουμε ο ένας τον άλλο», σελ. 18) θέλει τα παιδιά της να έχουν μια καλύτερη τύχη κι όταν βρίσκει ένα αρχοντικό σπίτι σε πολύ φθηνή τιμή το νοικιάζει κι όλα αλλάζουν μαγικά, μια παντρεμένη κοπέλα βλέπει τον ίδιο εφιάλτη κάθε βράδυ, με τον προηγούμενο εραστή να σκοτώνει τον σύζυγό της, ένας μποέμ άντρας συναντάει ένα μυστηριώδες κορίτσι που τον μπλέκει σε μια περιπέτεια απότοκη της εξέγερσης στο βαλκανικό κρατίδιο της Κατονίας, ένας εγκληματολόγος αναλαμβάνει την εξιχνίαση μιας δολοφονίας με τους υπόπτους να είναι τα τέσσερα μέλη της οικογένειας της νεκρής, ένας υποταγμένος σύζυγος ζει μια αναπάντεχη νύχτα ρομαντισμού και περιπέτειας, ένας συνταξιούχος επιθεωρητής της Διεύθυνσης Εγκληματολογικών Ερευνών συναντά μια γυναίκα που αθωώθηκε από τις κατηγορίες για δολοφονία του άντρα της εννιά χρόνια πριν με… νέο σύζυγο και κυνηγώντας την ηθική βεβαιότητα αναψηλαφεί την υπόθεσή της, μια άνεργη κοπέλα απαντά σε μια πολύ περίεργη και αναπάντεχη αγγελία που τη ρίχνει στο πλάι μιας εκπεσμένης πριγκίπισσας από την Οστρόβα, ένα ζευγάρι μπλέκεται στην κλοπή ενός πανάκριβου περιδέραιου, ένας συγγραφέας χωρίς έμπνευση ζει την πιο απίθανη περιπέτεια της ζωής του χάρη στην Εσάρπα των Χιλίων Λουλουδιών, ένας άντρας καταφέρνει να παντρευτεί χάρη σε μια μπανανόφλουδα, ένας νεαρός με το όνομα Τζέιμς Μποντ ανακαλύπτει κατά λάθος ένα πολύτιμο σμαράγδι στις καμπίνες της παραλίας του Κόμπτον-ον-Σι και μια σοπράνο δέχεται την πρόσκληση για μια ιδιωτική παράσταση λίγο πριν το μοιραίο τέλος.

Τα μικρά αυτά κείμενα, παρ’ όλο που το διήγημα είναι πιο αυστηρό και περιορισμένο σε έκταση, οπότε ούτε περιθώριο για πολλές ανατροπές και εκπλήξεις υπάρχει ούτε το φινάλε φαίνεται δικαιολογημένο ή σωστά δοσμένο, δείχνουν το μέγεθος της ευστροφίας της συγγραφέως και το πόσο έξυπνα μπορεί να φτιάξει μια ικανοποιητική ιστορία ακόμη και μέσα σε τόσο λίγες σελίδες. Εδώ βέβαια κάποια κείμενα ανατρέπονται απότομα, χωρίς αληθοφάνεια και ίσως βεβιασμένα, αναπαριστούν όμως άψογα την εποχή και τη νοοτροπία του μεσοπολέμου. Επίσης, δε γίνεται να μην παρατηρήσω ομοιότητες σε βασικούς άξονες της πλοκής σε δύο ή παραπάνω από αυτά, όπως εξέγερση σε ανύπαρκτες χώρες, απόλυση συγγενών από μια επιχείρηση που διοικεί ο θείος τους οπότε ξεκινάει μια απίθανη περιπέτεια γι’ αυτούς, μυστηριώδεις και εξωτικές κοπέλες σε θέσεις-κλειδιά σε ληστείες, άγαρμπη και απότομη οδήγηση από κάποιος πρωταγωνιστές, αποκαταστάσεις άγαμων δεσποινίδων μέσα από μια σειρά ανατροπών κ. ά.

Πιο πολύ μου άρεσαν: «Το κορίτσι στο τρένο» και «Το μυστήριο του Λίστερντεϊλ» γιατί μου θύμισαν τη μεταγενέστερη διαφορετική γραφή της Agatha Christie που γνωρίσαμε με το ψευδώνυμο Mary Westmacott, αν και η ίδια δε διστάζει να γράψει το «Ο Έντουαρντ Ρόμπινσον γίνεται άντρας», όπου ένας νεαρός που του αρέσει να διαβάζει ρομαντικές ιστορίες, ξέροντας πως «αυτού του είδους τα πράγματα είναι όλα μπούρδες» (σελ. 106), παραπαίει ανάμεσα στα ρομάντσα και στην πραγματικότητα. Έχουμε ένα δυνατό και πρωτότυπο για άντρα ψυχογράφημα ενός ανθρώπου που δεν τολμά να σηκώσει κεφάλι στην αρραβωνιαστικιά του κι όταν του δίνεται η ευκαιρία κάνει κάτι χωρίς να τη ρωτήσει, για να ζήσει τον δικό του Ρομαντισμό και την Περιπέτεια, με αποτέλεσμα να περάσει μια αξέχαστη βραδιά! Επίσης μου άρεσε «Το τραγούδι του εξάπενου», όπου έχουμε έναν διαφορετικό «ντετέκτιβ», έναν εγκληματολόγο, για να εξιχνιάσει την υπόθεση, ένα παιδικό τραγουδάκι («Sing a song of sixpence», του οποίου μάλιστα ο δεύτερος στίχος, «a pocket full of rye», είναι ο τίτλος του μυθιστορήματος «Σίκαλη στην τσέπη» που κυκλοφόρησε είκοσι χρόνια αργότερα) και μια υπόθεση «κλειστού δωματίου», τα αγαπημένα μου δηλαδή συστατικά! Θα σημειώσω τέλος το «Ατύχημα» με την έξυπνη ανατροπή και το «Κύκνειο άσμα», με την ανατριχιαστική εφαρμογή του περιεχομένου της περιβόητης άριας από την Τόσκα στην πραγματική ζωή με τον πιο τραγικό τρόπο!

Αυτή η συλλογή διηγημάτων κυκλοφόρησε μόνο στην Αγγλία το 1934 ενώ κάποια από τα κείμενα δημοσιεύθηκαν μεταγενέστερα σε διάφορες ανθολογίες στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Στα ελληνικά υπήρξαν πολλές εκδόσεις, όχι απαραίτητα με όλα τα διηγήματα του τόμου αυτού και σήμερα (2020) επανακυκλοφορεί από τις εκδόσεις Ψυχογιός με νέα μετάφραση (των Αναστασίας Δεληγιάννη και Μιχάλη Μακρόπουλου). Ως προς το εξώφυλλο ακολουθούν την έκδοση Harper Collins ενώ έχουν ανακοινώσει πως στόχος τους είναι να κυκλοφορήσουν στα ελληνικά όλα τα αστυνομικά έργα της Agatha Christie.

Agatha really phoned this one in. And I really took a long time finishing it.

Btw I didn't realise James Bond got his break in Kimpton-on-Sea in the 1930s, chasing emerald thieves...
