Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

Rereading this series brings me pure joy.

The relationship between L and Light reminds me so much of Sherlock and Moriarty. There is a fascination in the other’s intelligence, as well as a growing respect for their opponent. And yet, for one to succeed, the other must fail.

As the story continues, we watch the back and forth of the characters as they play a riveting game of cat and mouse.

Moves are made. People are killed. And L gets just a little bit closer to his goal.

When L said that he hoped Light wasn’t Kira because Light was his friend... I don’t remember feeling this shitty when I watched this scene in the anime. 😩 The tension is so strong in this series, it keeps me on the edge of my seat the whole time. So good.

SERIE DEATH NOTE VOL 2

Molto interessante.

I love the series so much, especially the first half. The Black Editions are such quick reads and the plot is keeping me on the edge of my seat. I also appreciate that Death Note is a somewhat "deeper" manga, dealing with important questions of morality and whether some lives are worth more than other lives.

I kinda hate how L gets everything right without much evidence. I love the slow forming friendship between the two main characters. Misa is an interesting character, makes the story more complicated but her case is resolved too quickly Imo.

Beautiful artwork, riveting pace and a solid plot. It makes the book very engaging. Oh, and everything looks way cooler in the black edition. 3.5 stars for me.

The two main characters, Light and L, battle it out to outthink each other. Their intelligence far surpasses that of the other characters, who often serve the purpose of highlighting this difference by being amused, asking questions and exclaiming their brilliance. Except for the Gods of Death, of course. The game to outwit each other is fascinating, with a good portion of the narration being in the minds of the main characters. They keep setting up traps to confuse and unsettle the other one, while navigating carefully themselves.

There is something about the way the story unfolds that didn't sit quite right with me. Light and L are synchronized to an unrealistic level. Even when spatially separated, they deduce each others' moves perfectly. Even though there are countless possibilities and vague scenarios, the two characters narrow it down to the correct strand of thread every time, without as much as a delay. This fuels the mental chess they're playing, the characters too perfect to ever make a wrong move.

Even when they are in close proximity, the persona and calm of Light under stressful revelations is inhuman. He remains unperturbed and disassociates himself to take a third person's view when he talks to appear innocent, while also making sure he doesn't reveal anything extra to arouse suspicion. Light and L are always able to make the correct decisions instantly, and seem way too devoid of feelings of stress and anxiety to feel human.

However, if you accept this flaw of perfection, you're in for a treat. The fast pace comes at the compromise of development of the other characters, but everything fits together superbly nonetheless. It's an absolute page turner, and the end of the book leaves you wanting for more. And I'm saying that even though I've watched the anime; leaving no element of suspense for me. All in all, a great read, made even better by it being the black edition.

⠀⠀✧ • ° . ◦ *⠀┊ three and a half stars.

⠀i hate doing this but damn... i can’t give it a four star rating. i really want to. i feel like this could be a four / five star series. this volume just wasn’t it.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀” you can’t ever win if you’re
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ always on the defensive. to
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ win, you have to attack. “

things i really enjoyed:

❥ ┊the premise.
⠀⠀⠀⠀as seen in the last review, i love the premise. this deserves to be noted especially since we continue to discover more about the death note & its features.

❥ ┊an addition to the cast.
⠀⠀⠀⠀see, i’m split her. i loved seeing a female character (misa) becoming more involved in with this story but... stay tuned for my gripes about it. we need more *cough* STRONG, INDEPENDENT FEMALES *cough* in media.

❥ ┊L.
⠀⠀⠀⠀i really love L. i just do. it’s as simple as that. i feel for him. when he said light was his first friend i almost teared up. he deserves more. yeah, maybe i’m a sappy bitch but i want him and light to be frIENDS OKAY IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

things i didn’t enjoy:

❥ ┊the pacing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀this is mainly an issue with the third volume but the pacing was weird. i couldn’t wait to be done with it because it seemed as if it drug on for the longest time. i’m starting to get annoyed with the meetings in the hotel rooms too be honest.

❥ ┊misa’s personality / characterization.
⠀⠀⠀⠀listen. i‘m not one to bitch about characters following annoying stereotypes because they’re stereotypes for a reason? but i feel like i need to comment on this one. the way misa was written was Not It. she devoted herself to light almost immediately. this is when you have to realize that some characters are meant to be this way. it’s not great and it’s pretty annoying but it’s also whatever.

❥ ┊the ending (fourth volume).
⠀⠀⠀⠀i’m sure this ending was supposed to be earth shattering and my socks were supposed to be knocked off but... i still have socks on & the earth is stable. not only was it anticlimactic but it got a little confusing within the last twenty some pages.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀overall, this just didn’t excite me like the first one did. i’m still going to continue with this series but after finishing this i don’t feel like i need / want to. it was just okay. nothing more & nothing less.

I adored the first Death Note. It was so intriguing and imaginative. This Volume on the other hand, dragged a little bit for my taste. The whole back and forth about being Kira between Light and L was exhausting. It got boring pretty quickly. It also took me out of the story and made me put the book down a lot. I do hope this will stop in the next volume because other than that the story was amazing and I can't wait to see where it will go.

Book: Death Note: Black Edition: Volume II

Author: Tsugumi Ohba

Rating: 4 Out 5 Stars

I am having such a great time with this manga series. This is one of those that I don’t know why I didn’t pick up sooner. There is just something about the overall idea of having this notebook and by writing names down, you have the power to kill people. It's a horrifying idea and something that should scare everyone. However, it brings up a lot of moral questions. What would you do if you had this power? Would you do what the characters are doing and go on this streak of attempting to rid the world of evil? Would you pretend that it didn’t exist? It just brings a lot of these questions to the table and really makes you think about what you would do in this situation.

I really enjoyed getting to see all sides of the story and seeing how the different sides handle the situation. You get to see the thought process behind every action and every little detail becomes important. This does mean that this is the info dump, which does work for this series. Normally, I am not a fan of info dumping. However, I found that the way the author presents it works for the story we are being told. It is written and drawn in a very compelling way. You get to see how each side thinks and how they plan their next move. You get to see how each side is always trying to outsmart the other. Our lead characters are not stupid. They know what how to think and know how to plan according to a changing situation.

I do find the characters to be very interesting. I really enjoy Light and L’s interactions with each other. These two are equals, but don’t really let their guard down around each other. They can’t though. They come across as being friends to the public, but we as the reader know that is not the case. Both are trying to gain information on the other and are trying to take each other down. Misa is also a very interesting character. I personally prefer her character in the manga over the anime. She is a character that I believe was done wrong by the show. I could be wrong though. I guess I will have to see if this changes the more, I read.

The writing and artwork add so much to the story. Throughout the course of the series, there is this dark undertone. The dark mood and the sense of darkness sets to the tone for the story. I don’t think that any other way would have worked for this series. The story is dark and you need to have this dark tone to fit the story.

Overall, I really am enjoying this manga and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

It’s been a while since I did a random thoughts review, but here we go XD

- Ok, so all things considered, I prob liked this better than the first volume. Which I rated five stars, so… I should give this one five stars too.
- However, I am never a fan of female characters who are just used for fan service. That one panel where it was just zoomed in on Misa’s butt? Hello? And other things.
- Just like in the anime, I feel like Misa has such potential as a character, but is constantly getting boiled down to “obsessed with Light” which is annoying. Prob wouldn't be quite as annoying if she weren’t, like, the only relevant female character.
- Speaking of Misa tho, I actually do like her, but let’s not pretend she’s completely innocent. And, yes, Light manipulates her, and he is in the wrong for that, but she kinda walked right into that with her eyes open? And intentionally closed them? (Is this analogy even making sense anymore?)
- I will say this whole portion was prob my fav part of the anime (although I loved the whole thing), so we’ll see if that holds true for the manga. The cat-and-mouse game is at its finest here, no?
- Light is one of those characters that I absolutely love, but would hate as a person, iykwim. Is it normal to love characters while acknowledging that what they do is wrong, and you would hate them irl, or is that just me? XD (No, but I could prob write like a five-page essay on him, it's not even funny)
-He also somehow, simultaneously feels like both a better and a worse person here than in the anime, which is… interesting. Just better-developed, I suppose. (there is def a difference, okay, anime Light, is even more emotionless, and to go back to the first volume, seemed to jump right into the whole Kira thing a lot quicker, even if it was still really quick in the manga)
-Oh, also, he is aroace (or at the very least ace), and no one can convince me otherwise. (Being aroace myself, I’m kinda torn on that, because, yk, not great rep, but also… sorry, he just is imo)
-Also, his face every time Ryuk starts to talk, lmao
-Why the hell is Rem referred to with he/him pronouns? I looked it up to be sure, and apparently she’s always been female so what is up with this edition?
- I may have already watched the anime (and the musical lol), but I need the next volume immediately. Hurry up, library hold. XD

L and Light are playing against each other- it reminds me of the Ted Chiang story about the smartest guy in the world hunting down the REAL smartest guy in the world and he ends up killing him with music- I’m not sure how Light will be able to actually beat L or the entirety of the worlds police force- light ends up finding a second death note holder who is a cam model/ idol who instantly falls for Light— the chapter ends with Light allowing himself to be hidden away to prove he is not Kira (although we know the death note allows him to kill in advance)
