The passionate new novel by the author of Fireworks Over Toccoa. Grace Lyndon is a rising ingenue in the world of perfumes and flavors; a stiletto-wearing, work-a-holic in Atlanta, she develops aromas and tastes to enthrall the senses. Dylan Jackson is a widowed single father whose heart and hands have been calloused in the fields of his North Georgia apple farm. When Grace happens to taste an apple picked from Dylan’s trees, it changes both their lives forever.
Determined to track down the apple’s origin, Grace sets off in the middle of the night where she finds not only a beautiful mountain orchard in the clouds, but the mysterious man who owns it. In Stepakoff’s heartbreaking eloquence, their sudden yet undeniable attraction is threatened—leaving readers with a momentous finale that proves Jeffrey Stepakoff is a master craftsman of the heart.

I really needed a smile and this book made me feel much more than a little bit of happiness. It made me crave for a delicious meal and the smell of a beautiful perfume. Now I remember why I loved apples as a kid.
I adore the way Jeffrey Stepakoff writes. He truly paints a picture with words. His books are always an effortless read - you get sucked in and keep turning pages until there are no more to turn and you wonder how that happened and want more. This story was well written, entertaining and fascinating all at the same time. The main character is a flavorist - what's that you might wonder? I had not idea either until I read this novel. Her career is to find scents and flavors that are able to be recreated in a lab to be used to develop drinks, perfumes, etc...I was absolutely fascinated by this character. Both a great beach read and a fun fall read. You won't be sorry you picked this one up.
This was a wonderful book. I was so glad to receive an ARC copy. I will recommend highly. I just loved the way this author so vividly described scents and tastes to a point that you felt them yourself. And made me really crave some sweet, delicious apples. His style of writing just conjures amazing images in your head and was such an enjoyable read that I just didn't want to put it down. I also loved being taken behind the scenes in a world that I didn't know much about, makes you really think about the things you are putting in you mouth. :) Wonderful writing and nice story. Loved it!!
Romance, Food like I've not imagined, tree climbing, France, grabbing scents from nature, chemistry and natural flavors (not so much) and apples... it is WAY better than this not-quite-a-description. Quick read, very enjoyable and highly talented author. I really like Stepakoff's work!
Successful, genius lady blows off a huge business deal and declines an offer to travel the world for her career??? Because she has a crush on some guy???? No thank you.
Found this on my shelf ... it's about a workaholic businesswoman and an apple farmer who meet and start an impossible, beautiful romance ... one of the best romance stories I have read in a long time. If you want to read a solid love story you won't be disappointed.
* In compliance with FTC guidelines, it should be noted that I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
The name Jeffrey Stepakoff might sound familiar to you. It should, especially if you watched Dawson’s Creek where he was a writer and co-executive producer. As an author, he has three other books, including a prequel to this one called Love a la Carte.
Call it “falling in love at first bite” — of the apple. The Orchard is a love story about single career woman Grace Lyndon and a widowed orchard owner Dylan Jackson. Grace works for a flavor company and one day, she stumbles upon an apple that came from Dylan’s orchard. Determined to acquire the apple’s scent and flavor, Grace heads to Dylan’s orchard in the middle of the night. Dylan, struggling with his own issues was hesitant, at first, to let Grace study his apples but eventually gives in. In a short time, they meet, get to know each other, and fall in love… with the orchard as witness.
Okay, what I liked about it: The book reads like a screenplay. So clear, so detailed. The author does a good job of setting up a scene. The characters were solid and all of them had a part to play, not just some filler to move the story along. I love Grace Lyndon; a strong woman who is not afraid to get her hands and feet dirty. She starts off being your typical career woman but I don’t know, I did not feel… annoyed by her. She pushed but not so hard. She knows what she wants and gets it without stepping on everybody’s toes. She fights the battles that she knows she can win.
I also like Dylan’s ten-year-old daughter, Carter. Another one who breaks through the stereotype. She is very smart, perceptive, and very likable. Her relationship with her father is very sweet, none of that bratty “I hate the world” attitude. For someone who also lost a parent at a young age, I know what that feeling is like and I am glad that the author showed that there is another side of that loss, and that is acceptance and moving on. And like with Carter, hoping that your widowed parent can find love again.
Having said that this book can easily be adapted to a screenplay, some points remind me of several movies. The way it was set up had me thinking of the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. It talked of an orchard, harvest, labor, even recipes! It had a feeling of coziness and warmth. It really sucks you in. (And make you hungry for apples.) When they talk about scents and how Grace knew each note and accent, Das Parfum. Not that darkness of the movie but the way the main character was in search of the perfect scent.
What I did not like about it was all the time stamps. Sure, I am not the biggest fan of flashbacks — I am not a fan of the constant fast forwarding either. Almost all of the chapters has “an hour later” or “eighteen months later” before the chapter itself began; some had two time jumps even. Granted the author is showing scenes of the character’s life relevant to the story but I am just not a fan of that storytelling device. Also, there are so many words. Okay, before you say, “But of course, it’s a book! It’s supposed to have a lot of words,” the point I am getting at is that it is wordy. I did say that it is detailed but some parts did not merit long explanations. SHOW the reader, let her imagine what this and that looked like. But this mostly TOLD the reader exactly what this and that looked like. It just slowed the book down, methinks.
Overall, I liked it. It was not bad but it was not great either. It was just okay. It had a happy ending that screamed Pretty Woman, though. It would have benefited from an epilogue. A short story sequel maybe?
Rating: 3/5.
Recommendation: A perfect afternoon read, curling up with a good book on the couch. If you are drawn to strong female characters and/or the idea of a “Prince Charming”, this is for you.
One of my favorite memories as a child is going to pick apples every fall. I will never forget the smells and tastes of the orchard. There is nothing like picking a fresh apple off the tree and biting into it.
When I saw Jeffrey Stepakoff's new book was titled The Orchard, I knew with my love of orchards and apple picking, it was a must read for me. His first book Fireworks Over Toccoa is a wonderful love story that I enjoyed very much. I was anxious to read Mr. Stepakoff's newest book.
The main character, Grace Lyndon is a confident woman who is always in control. I admired her confidence. Grace is a real go-getter. She is a savvy business woman. She develops scents and flavors for major companies and their products. I had never really given much thought to such a job but found myself immersed in learning more about this position. Jeffrey Stepakoff does a fantastic job explaining Grace's job and all it involved. I found it fascinating. I'll never look at scents and flavors the same again.
When Grace tries to track down an exquisite apple's origin, she runs into Dylan Jackson, owner of an apple orchard and his spunky daughter, Carter. Carter is a curious pre-teen who is wise beyond her years. Dylan is a widower, who is not quite ready to give up his deceased wife. The father/daughter relationship between these two is very endearing. Grace wants to research the apples on the family orchard for product development. Dylan is not ready to let anyone in his life or his orchard.
Mr. Stepakoff's writing had me imagining I was in the orchard where I could almost smell and taste the apples. I never knew so much went into growing apples. His writing is wonderfully descriptive. You will almost be able to hear the apple leaves rustling in the breeze. Even though I have never been to the mountains of Georgia, I had no problems picturing them in my mind.
Jeffrey Stepakoff has once again written a beautifully layered love story that builds as it goes along. I am amazed at the amount of research that must have went into this story. It made for a interesting story. I highly recommend this book. I found it romantic and enlightening. I'll be on the lookout for Mr. Stepakoff's next book.
Jeffrey Stepakoff somehow remains to be one of the most beautiful writers of love stories I have ever read. If you haven't read his first novel, you need to read it. Anyway, he has a way of drawing you into a characters emotions and showing you exactly what they are thinking and feeling. He pulls the want and need right out of you so that you cry when the characters cry and you hurt when the characters hurt. It really is a remarkable ability.
I love the premise, plot, and characters of this story. There is one thing that did not flow for me though...when Dylan somehow thinks his wife is alive...I mean he knows how she died and maybe I don't understand grief correctly but...that messed up the whole feel of the story for me, I wish there would have been a different obstacle for Grace and Dylan to overcome.
I love how Mr. Stepakoff finds something to give his character passion about and you get to learn right along about each passion as you read. I enjoyed learning about apples and scents as I read and I didn't even realize it until I was done with the book. I love Mr. Stepakoff's writing and will be a fan forever.
I won this book from a contest on Goodreads. "The Orchard" is a story about Grace Lyndon, who is a high powered executive whose job it is to develop aromas and tastes to enhance all senses. Dylan Jackson is a widower with a ten year old daughter, Carter, who owns and runs a family owned apple orchard. Then, one day, Grace happened by chance to taste one of Dylans apples and the intensity of the taste and smell made it Grace's mission to track down where this apple came from. So Grace begins her search and is bound and determined to meet the owner. When Grace and Dylan finally do meet, their eyes connect and the attraction is instant. But, unfortunately one thing is standing in their way -- Dylan's dead wife.
This was an excellent read that moved me to tears. A wonderful love story that I highly recommend!
Grace Lyndon has created a name for herself in the world of fragrances and flavors. After landing a major account for the company she works for in Atlanta, her life is thrown off-kilter with the bite of an apple. As she tracks down the orchard where this perfect apple was grown, she meets Dylan Jackson and his daughter, Carter, and finds that she’s really been searching for something elusive in her life. The Orchard was fascinating to read not only for the author’s real grasp of people’s emotions, but for the details on the apple industry in Georgia and for the career where flavors and fragrances are used in products to tempt us to buy them. The Orchard is a love story that touches all the senses.
A refreshing love story mixed with an educational introduction to the talent of using tastes and smells when looking for ingredients for perfume or cooking..…a beautiful little book and story.
This was a nice little surprise. I saw this book on display at my local bookstore and liked the cover. I had not heard of it before, nor of the author, but the cover notes intrigued me and I was up for something different and 'an easy read'. It proved to be both and more. On its base level, it was my idea of a "beach read" type with the usual romance - boy meets girl, . . . She was a young, up-and-coming science/business type, while he was the still grieving, widower with a lovely and precocious tweenaged daughter. Of course, everyone is drop-dead gorgeous. She was in the business of creating scents and tastes, while he was ever-struggling to keep his family's unique apple orchard alive. See where this is heading? The taste and smell of the perfect apple! And so it goes. However, I have to admit that what captured me was the science involved here. I now have a whole new appreciation for apples! There was a complete compendium of information, presented in easy-to-understand terms, about the growing, nurturing, and harvesting of apples. I found it to be both interesting and informative - who knew? Made me want to go right out and get me some. The book was predictable but enjoyable; well-written, and with lots of poetic descriptions. I am pleased that it popped out from the shelf and landed in my hands. I'll keep an eye open for others by this author. Could have given a 4.5 but the predictability . . . Still well worthwhile, in my opinion.
The story revolves around apples, fall, romance, and fragrances. Nice combination. Grace Lyndon develops fragrances and flavors for the company she works for in Atlanta. That's the first time I have come across this profession in any book. Her job is to find new scents and flavors from fruits, flowers, etc which can then be added to virtually any product. She is successful, smart and confident in her ability to identify a flavor or scent that is valuable. When she comes across an apple from Dylan Jackson's farm, it changes their lives forever. Dylan Jackson runs an organic apple farm hours from Atlanta. He lives with his vivacious and intelligent daughter and quietly mourns the loss of his beloved wife. The romance starts to build between Grace and Dylan, but they each have their pasts and need time to decide what direction they should take for the future.
I liked reading about the way scents and flavors are captured and then chemically reconstructed in labs in companies to give us the scent in laundry products like Dove, the flavors of cheese in Cheez-Its, beautiful fragnances in expensive perfumes, etc.
You will like this book if you like romantic stories.
Really enjoyed this, mostly because of the setting of the organic apple orchard vs. the "flavorist". Typical love story--which I'll take any day--but also gave me a new appreciation for how our food is doctored up to taste, smell and look a certain way. I knew this, and I'm an organic enthusiast, but it just brought it home more, like now I can taste it--figuratively speaking. I already knew the literal.
There's a nice addition with the coming of age daughter and her wisdom at the right times. A somewhat predictable story line, but engaging along the way. Again, mostly because I love the topics, and they are important ones today. The author manages to educate us just a little while enjoying the story.
There are some really good moments but for me the head hopping drove me crazy and frankly, there was a long delay getting a couple together in the first place, and they really didn’t spend much time together. We didn’t get the usual They were just thrown together a few times. And so in the end, it didn’t quite work for me. It didn’t have the magic of Nicholas Sparks, for example. And it doesn’t follow the pattern for a standard romance either so it’s really more of women’s fiction and a love story. The apple picking stuff was fascinating in the cities were vivid, and there was really some good writing in there. But I just felt it could’ve been stronger in some ways. Recommended for those who enjoy the setting of the south and a little light romance.
To be honest, the flavour topic was the only reason I kept reading; without it there's only the "romance." However, it's a really flat and slow romance. I felt as if all of the chemistry went into the flavour theme whereas the romance was left with none of it.
The characters are superficially designed, not much dept went into them. On the other hand most of the storyline (leaving the flavour topic aside) is very typical or even cliche.
The orchard is a nice context but nothing special.
In my opinion it all felt really flat and a bit boring.
Loved this story. A nice mix of overachieving workaholic stylish lady falls for country, earthy gentleman who has worked the apple orchard for generations. Wrestles with questions of values, determination and letting go/loss. But it's not a predictable story, it keeps you intrigued - the "oh one more page" syndrome. I finished it in two days!

grace is the star of the create fragances and tastes world. but she is hiding a secret Dylan is running an orchard that has the aroma grace wants to capture the secret is silly. both characters are stunning and successful its an ok story that was just too pat. and the oh so smart kid was too much
I really liked this book. The author's style of writing was very enjoyable, and the characters were so likable. I appreciated the thought he put into his descriptions, especially since taste and scent played such important roles in the story.
This is condensed version. Really liked the characters in this novel. None to hate. Flavorist Grace discovers an apple that is best she ever tasted. She's on the hunt to test it for perfumes and otheraccesories. Like ending.
This novel is a Hallmark movie in literary form. I enjoyed the writing about fragrances and scents and then about the apple orchard. I enjoyed the writing. The plot is pretty cheesy. I didn’t like the ending.
Such a cute book. Upbeat, feel good story. The author is amazing; as I was reading, I could imagine being in the orchard with the characters. I can't wait to read his other books.
It was interesting to read about the world of perfumes and flavors. About determination and going for your passion. I thin I'd read a sequel to it , if there was one.
