[Re-read 9/4/25] - I reread this to jog my memory of the January 18, 1863 Shelton Laurel Massacre of Union prisoners by their Confederate captors in Madison County, North Carolina. Author Ron Rash’s tale tells the story of teenaged Travis Shelton of Madison County as he grows from unhappy high-school dropout to manhood. Along the way he learns his home county’s history, and he learns that meanness can continue across generational lines.
This book is not the book that I've been searching for that tells the story of the Shelton Laurel Massacre effectively, but Ron Rash has written a great story. In addition, the author’s closing acknowledgements pointed me right to the book I’d been seeking, which is Victims: A True Story of the Civil War by Phillip Shaw Paludan (University of Tennessee Press Knoxville 1981) (973.733).
My updated rating 9/4/25: 7.5/10, finished 9/04/25 (newly assigned number 4084).
