Richard Hefter met children's author Jacquelyn Reinach in 1975. He was contracted at the time to write 26 books for the publishers Holt. After the contract expired he formed a publishing venture, Euphrosyne, with Reinach.
He is known as the creator of Stickybear and as the co-creator (with Reinach) and illustrator for the Sweet Pickles[1] library of books, and for the Strawberry Library of First Learning. The Sweet Pickles series went on to sell 40 million copies. Hefter described his aim as "trying to help children understand things like shyness, laziness and embarrassment in a humorous way."
I enjoyed this Sweet PIckles. This was comedy of errors and farce and I do enjoy that troupe. There is some unintentional Tom Sawyer thrown in. I kept expecting Dog to have planned it, but I don't think he did.
Dog is sort of like Eeyore, always bring the party down. He's a debbie downer.
Dog has to paint Jackle's fence and he doesn't know how. He has 2 friends come along wanting to help him paint the fence and all dog can do is grumble that he doesn't think it will work. The comedy of errors is watching them paint the fence. It does get done, but it's hilarious how it does.
The niece & Nephew both read this with me. The nephew loved this one. He loved seeing all the characters, Hippo, Yak, Pig and Walrus, paint this fence and get messy and tangled. He thought this was hilarious. The niece laughed with her brother, but she thought it was okay. They both thought dog was a downer and the niece pointed out that his friends painted the fence for him and he never said thank you. I said, you're right, he's a jerk. Nephew = 5 stars, Niece 3 stars.
Dog is no fun to be around. I see why he isn't in many of these stories, you want to strangle him. Funny they picked the dog to be a downer because dogs are normally super positive.
