Halo: Fall of Reach the original novel by Eric Nylund, had a lot of memorable elements which added to the lore and backstory of characters such as a Commander Keyes, Blue Team, and of course Master Chief. It had shown how desperate humanity was against an unrelenting enemy, who over gunned, outnumbered and out teched them.

UNSC and the Humanity were holding on by the skin of their teeth, thanks to secrecy provided by the Cole Protocol, the ingenuity, resourcefulness and superior tactics of its commanders, and the resilience of their ground forces, spearheaded by the Spartan-II. But reach presented humanity with it's most devastating failure. Paraphrasing from the novel:

"We were not merely decimated, that would imply we lost one out of every ten ships. But here, for every ship which managed to limp away from the battlefield we lost 10 good ones."

The comic, despite having the visual freedom, fails to catch the gravity of this increasingly deteriorating scenario, doesn't give ample screen-time for important character deaths, or in many cases completely omits those parts of the story which made it engaging.

This was on display at my local library & i decided to pick it up because i finished the Fall of Reach by Eric Nyland literally yesterday. I was mostly curious to gain a visual of the first Halo novel I read, especially because I’ve never played the games.

This graphic novel is definitely for people who are familiar with the Halo story line, specifically the plot that happens in Nyland’s novel. Without reading that, I would have been absolutely confused. It isn’t detailed & I believe that it was literally made for the people who wanted those visuals of the fall of reach after reading it. this doesn’t actually do the plot justice so I would not expect it to do so.

Unfortunately, the visuals didn’t live to my expectations. I was specifically disappointed in the depiction of dr. halsey. there’s nothing wrong with it but i swear i had this image of her in my head and that wasn’t it. Tbh that’s probably how she looks in the video game too but idc, my point still stands. dr. catherine halsey i swear my brain does you justice & i love u fr despite ur flaws (aka kidnapping children for the sake of saving humanity) 🙏🏻🙏🏻

beyond that i think this comic was helpful (again, for the visuals) but not especially enjoyable. i wish it was longer tbh because it’s missing so many amazing details that are central to the story (hence the loss of stars). still a fun read!

The second part of the comic adaptation of 'The Fall of Reach' (by Eric Nylund).
The war with the Covenant has begun and the Spartan super-soldiers have to step up and fulfil their potential as humanity's best hope for survival and, perhaps, victory.

As with the previous volume, this is a solid adaptation and helps us to begin to get a sense of who the Spartans other than the Master Chief are and why they're the key to the war against the Covenant.

I think what I liked most here is how good a job it does of showing that humanity is completely outgunned by the Covenant and, despite their best efforts, are losing the war.
There's a real sense of desperation to the military tactics the UNSC is forced to use, desperate to even slow the Covenant down and struggling to manage even that. It makes the triumphs of the Spartans victories feel sweeter and starts to give you a sense why one of them becomes known by the Covenant as The Demon.

The Covenant are dead set on annihilating humanity. While captain Wallace's ship that has transported them is delaying a Covenant ship, dr. Catherine Halsey presents Project Mjolnir, a newly developed armor that can give her trainees an edge in battle. John and his squad barely have time to aclimate to the suits before they need to act against the Covenant ship.

A Video Game......

A novel is written as a prequel to the Video Game

A comic is created based upon that novel

Is the world of Halo potent enough to warrant a novelization and a comic book adaptation? I think so.

Is the art so piss poor in this book that you can't tell each of the main character's apart? Yes.

It doesn't help that the master Chief's face is always behind his helmet, or kept in shadows, but what are you supposed to do, if you are trying to retain that "Insert yourself here" feeling for the main protagonist of the video game?

I actually really love the Backstory of Halo, even though I have only ever played the first game. This book had sub par writing and bland art.

i enjoyed reading this book. it was short but i really liked the detail and the designs for the characters and the background. all together a good book. the only reason i did not give it a five star is because i think they cut some of the best parts short and at some parts it was vary hard to see what was happening. and plus i think this book would have been better if they added an elite or two into some of the fight sense.

In this second part of the adaptation of The Fall of Reach novel, we finally get to meet the Covenant in all their glory.

Plus, the Spartans get to wear their iconic Mjolnir armor, as everything comes together leading to the fall of planet Reach.

Quick read full of space opera action, and an amazingly dark and gritty art.

This is the origin story of Master Chief. It's awesome to see how badass he was even when he was 6 years old.

I love Halo and its lore, but I never really considered picking up the comics. A friend lent me his copy and I'm glad I gave it a shot. 🤷‍♀️

I love the idea behind the Halo story [what I've gleaned so far] but just hate the mediums it's made available in. I didn't realize this was a graphic novel until I picked it up from the library and I don't like graphic novels.

I was asked to read this book by a young 16 year old friend. My first thought was oh great, a book about a video game. After reading it, however, I found it to be great science fiction read. If you're a sci-fi person you should read it.

Fall of Reach - Covenant continues the adaptation of the book into comic form, and does a great job of it.

The story picks up shortly after the first volume ended - the Covenant has discovered humanity and we're doing everything we can to stay alive. The Spartan get their MJOLNIR armor and are ready to take on the alien invaders. The story continues by covering the first engagement between the Spartans and the Covenant, as well as the first Spartan to go 'MIA.' It then fast forwards to a more seasoned group of soldiers, doing everything they can to keep humanity alive. The writing continues to be superb; translating a book into a comic does not seem easy but Brian Reed succeeds here.

The art is once again gritty, although not as dark - probably because the Covenant love their bright purples and other hues so much. They do a good job of distinguishing between the armored Spartans through helmet designs, insignia, and other cues, which is a very welcome move. Reading the book I always imagined them looking almost completely identical.

As a fan of the Halo universe, you should absolutely give this a read. Sci-fi and other comic fans would probably find it enjoyable as well.

I thought it was descent, nothing great but nothing bad either. Just kinda normal, not much exciting stuff or action, but their was enough, it felt kind of thrown around though like not much of a main story.
