In 1572 is de achtjarige Andrej getuige van een bloedbad aangericht door een monnik nabij een half verwoest klooster in de Bohemen, nadat zijn vader daar probeerde de Codes Gigas, oftewel de duivelsbijbel, te stelen. Ook een zuigeling overleeft het bloedbad, doordat een monnik niet in staat was het kind te doden. Andrej, die niets weet van het belang van de duivelsbijbel, vertelt jaren later in zijn argeloosheid het verhaal over het bloedbad aan de dwaze Habsburgse keizer Rudolf. Deze wordt daarmee een van de speurders naar de bijbel, evenals afgezanten van de paus, die of de bijbel willen vernietigen, of de bijbel willen misbruiken. Zeven monniken bewaken het handschrift van de duivel, en gaan moord daarbij niet uit de weg. Andrej en de zuigeling, inmiddels een jonge vrouw, komen daarmee in levensgevaar.

Richard Dübell lebt mit seiner Frau und zwei Söhnen bei Landshut. Nach dem erfolgreichen literarischen Einstieg mit seinen beiden Historienkrimis "Der Tuchhändler"(1999) und "Der Jahrtausendkaiser" (2000), bescherte ihm sein dritter Roman "Eine Messe für die Medici" (2002) zum ersten Mal den Sprung auf die Bestsellerliste. Seither zählt er zu den beliebtesten Autoren im Bereich des Historischen Romans. Dübells folgende Bücher reihten sich nahtlos in die Serie seiner Erfolge ein. Richard Dübell ist Träger des Kulturpreises der Stadt Landshut.

I love this book!

Why then, did I give it 4 stars? Well, because I had difficulties getting through the first 100 - 150 pages. They were quite dry, lots of people, places and facts to remember.
I read the list of characters in front of the book before I started reading (something I usually skip and only start when I get stuck in reading). But that also didn't help a lot.

I have a bit of a background in the Catholic thinking and church hierachy. Despite that it was a bite.

When I got through that all and the story unfolded itself, I was really hooked!! With every page I turned I could not wait for the story to go on, to read what was going on with the characters of Agnes, Cyprian, Andrej and Yolanta. With the priests, bishops and popes. To see who would 'win' and what they were prepared to do for that, why and how.

It was not only a good peek into the medieval world of central Europe, but also a very thriling mystery.

Like I said in my update: I'm hooked. I'm glad there are two more books. Hope they are as good as this one!

Пригодницький роман в історичних декораціях. Мабуть, це найточніший опис. Сюжет обертається довкола "Біблії диявола", а точніше - "Кодексу гігас": найбільшого рукопису середньовіччя. Він має розміри 0,5 м на 1 м. І важить стільки, що його підняти можуть лише двоє людей. І згідно з дослідженнями істориків, для написання цієї книги було витрачено близько 60 років.
Чому ж "Біблія диявола"? Бо в книзі є найнезвичніше зображення диявола - зі всіх середньовічних ілюстрацій.

І ще є легенда. Один монах вирішив за ніч написати книгу, що містила б все знання світу. Йому це не вдалося (опівночі він усвідомив, що злегка переоцінив свої сили). І тому він звернувся по допомогу до диявола. Який і дописав книгу - в обмін на душу монаха. Найіронічніше, що в цю книгу входить Біблія, а також низка інших середньовічних трактатів. Тобто диявол допоміг зробити копію Біблії.

Втім, історія не про це. В романі Дюбеля ця "Біблія диявола" має магічну силу, а тому 1590 р. за неї починає боротися група кардиналів. В надії, що зашифровані в ній знання дозволять подолати протестантів.

І одразу скажу, що ця книга - це класичний Макгафін. Так, про цю книгу всі говорять, за неї борються, але що ж вона там має дати, як вона допоможе перемогти протестантів... Про це ні слова. Та й саму книгу ми так і не побачимо. Може, її не існує? Бо так, та, що ми знаємо - це всього лише копія.

Від цього автор і відштовхується. Є "Біблія диявола", є таємне братство Хранителів, які її оберігають від чужих рук. Чому вони її не спалять? Невідомо. Але ця книга дія як Перстень Саурона на Фродо: поволі руйнує особистості Хранителів, виснажує їх. І от папа Урбан VII вирішує використати цю книгу в боротьбі з протестантами. Він вірить, що ця книга схована в Таємному архіві Ватикану, але там лише копія... Папа від цього вмирає. А група кардиналів вирішує таємно продовжити його справу - і вирішують знайти "Біблію диявола".

Втім, історія починається не з цього. А з групи протестантів, які з Франції втекли до Богемії. І мали нещастя потрапити до одного монастиря одночасно з одним алхіміком, який також шукає "Біблію диявола". Через помилку Хранителя та нахабство цього алхіміка стається нещасний випадок, один з Хранителів божеволіє - і починає вбивати всіх довкола. Включно з протестантами та родиною цього алхіміка. Виживає лише його син. І ще одна дівчинка. І ось абат наказує вбити і їх - як свідків того, що монах почав вбивати людей. Адже це може дати ключ допитливим до відповіді, де ж є "Біблія диявола". Ця історія трапляється 1572 р., але дія роману - протягом 1590-1592 рр.

Отже, незвичний початок. Загадка з порога. А далі декілька ліній: дівчини Агнес та її коханого Кипріяна, Андрія, який і є вижившим в різні 1572 р., а також кардиналів-змовників та їхнього фактотума о.Ксавьє. Спершу ці лінії не дуже сходяться, потім міцно сплітаються.

Роман динамічний. Він не дуже історичний в плані опису реалій, побуту. Тут мало другорядних персонажів, які б і творили цей дух епохи. Але загалом історичні факти передано більш-менш точно. Основне тут - інтриги, пошуки книги, змови, підступи тощо. Це динамічний роман, який мене підкупив тим, що в ньому нема містики. Тобто наче в основі всього демонічна книга. Але, як я писав вище, її ми не бачимо. А тому ми лише знаємо, як її сприймають інші. І ось тут виникає питання: а раптом це просто світогляд людей XVI ст. змушував їх так сприймати той рукопис? Це робить роман раптом більш історичним, ніж здавалося.

Втім, такими питаннями можна і не задаватися. Текст затягує. Але це більше пригодницький роман, ніж історичний. Втім, він спонукає більше почати цікавитися епохою, щоб зрозуміти, де фантазія автора, а де реалії того часу.

Novela que te agarra desde el principio y no te suelta hasta el final. Con una trama que te deja en vilo en todo momento con personajes oscuros y misteriosos que te mantienen intrigado. El autor logra crear un ambiente tenso y lleno de suspense ,que te mantiene enganchado desde la primera página.

La trama te sumerge en un mundo donde el bien y el mal se entrelazan de una manera impactante. Los personajes están llenos de profundidad y sus motivaciones te mantienen intrigado en cada capítulo. La manera de escribir del autor es impactante, sumergiéndote en una atmósfera oscura y lúgubre que te deja sin aliento.

En su día en la tienda de segunda mano, me dí varias vueltas y lo sostuve entre mis manos en en distintas ocasiones, ya que la sinópsis me llamaba muchisimo , gracias que no lo devolví a la estantería ... 9/10

Не можах да се преборя с чувството, че авторът пропилява ценни възможности.
Проблемът ми се крие в това, че очаквах нещо съвсем друго. До последно не можах да се настроя на вълната на книгата, поради което не мога да кажа с пълна увереност, че ми е харесала много. Тя има своите качества, но може би не трябваше да упорствам да я дочитам, след като стана ясно, че ще се движи предимно в рамките на средновековен романс.

Een 'avonturenverhaal' uit vervlogen tijden, maar niet oubollig of too much geromantiseerd. Qua taalgebruik wel even inkomen en ook de hoeveelheid personages is stevig te behappen, maar als je eenmaal in het verhaal zit is het heerlijk wegvluchten naar een geheel andere wereld.

The easiest five stars ever given by me. It’s become my favourite book. The writing is masterful, and I’m someone who loses interest very quickly, especially when it comes to lengthy books, yet I was absolutely captivated by the story from the beginning. For some, it might seem like a slow start because at first you don’t really understand how all the characters will come together, but each story intrigued me, and I couldn’t wait until the moment where it finally makes sense.

This is the way I like my historical fiction: well-researched. The research that has gone into the creation of this book (in only 10 months?!) created an immersive atmosphere that made me feel like I was part of the story. I could vividly picture the cities, villages, monasteries and roads, and feel the cold breeze coming from the streets or the ruins. The characters were well built, and were able to awaken strong emotions in me. Richard Dübell certainly isn’t afraid of giving me a heart attack every three pages, especially towards the end. What an incredible journey this book was!

I’d say this book has everything, from history, to romance, tragedy, heartbreak, family, friendship, stories about women and the realities of the time, corrupt church officials, character growth, mystery, adventure… you name it. One of my favourite themes was that of the monks who were bound to act in a certain way in the name of goodness. The writing captured their conflict, guilt, and confusion in a powerful way. Much like the love stories, I felt that the writing was so powerful, honest and beautiful. It was amazing reading the written from Cyprian’s point of view.

I’m extremely disappointed that only one of Dübell’s books have been translated in Romanian (this one) and none in English? 🤨 My best chance is Spanish, pero estos maravillosos libros merecen ser traducidos a más idiomas, todos. 🙏🏻

Сюжетът е имал потенциал за любителите на исторически романи (като мен), но авторът така и не създава нито един главен герой и ясни сюжетни линии. А посланието на съществуващите остава неясно - нито любовта е вълнуваща, нито загадката е интересна, нито интригите са повече от неясни загатнати схеми на парче.

для бажання її прочитати вистачило б і домініканця на обкладин��і, але там ще щонайменше книжка, якою можна викликати кінець світу, таємний ватиканський архів і смерть папи від надмірних переживань. як можна було опиратися?
тим більше, що вже на перших сторінках виявилося, що ми маємо до діла з веселим часом – наприкінці шістнадцятого століття за два роки змінилося троє пап, і не подумайте, жоден з них не відмовився від престолу. а крім скороминущих пап – свята інквізиція, пожежі, чума, проказа, масові вбивства, серійні вбивства та просто мальовничі сцени мордобою. одне слово, насичений сюжет, всередині якого зачаївся кодекс гігас, книга диявольського походження та демонічної сили. може, це й не найрозумніший (і далеко не найоригінальніший) роман на світі, але він захоплює, тож читати "біблію диявола" перед сном з великою ймовірністю означає не виспатися.
ще одна вкрай приємна річ: на відміну від багатьох історичних романів (особливо ж тих, де переважна маса персонажів – особи духовні), цей запросто проходить тест бехдель.

I've enjoyed reading this book! it was something..new for me..I was attracted by the title of this book, it was...intriguing for me!
While reading the book, I saw how religion can be a cure and a death at the same time! What awful actions were done following the name of God and how low could people go on their way to power! (I am not telling that religion has always be something bad, no! but now I am talking about the book and about the impression I have about the events, which are described there)
It was interesting to find some historical background in this book and also to follow the mystical legend which surrounded the Lucifer's bible during the ages! Truth and mystery are connected here, followed by line of friendship, love (of course) and faith! War and peace, love and hate, past and future, you can find it here if you look deeply inside!

Романът на Рихард Дюбел поема по неочаквани пътища. В самото си начало те оставя с впечатления, които в последствие коренно се променят. Сякаш в началото си в лабиринт и виждаш по колко много начини може да се развие тази история. Докато постепенно не остане само един път, чийто край е неизвестен. Само знаеш, че на финала е Библията, която кротко чака да я отвориш. Да я прочетеш. И да се промениш. Като монаха, отправил молитва към Луцифер.

Een geweldig verhaal, grotendeels gebaseerd op historische gebeurtenissen, maar ik vond het niet zo goed geschreven. De auteur probeert te vaak een spanning in te bouwen door het begin van elk hoofdstuk mysterieus te maken: wie spreekt er, wie is er bij de scènes betrokken, ... maar dat heeft volgens mij een averechts effect. Jammer want het verhaal is echt wel goed. Dit boek in de stijl van Follett en enkele sterren meer. Jammer

De Duivelsbijbel moest wel even op gang komen, maar al met al vind ik het een goed boek. Er staat wel een kapitale vertaalfout of schrijffout in. "Monseigneur, u had gebeld." De telefoon bestond in de 16e eeuw nog niet.

Haber... me hubiera gustado que el autor explotara el personaje del emperador Rodolfo II y tuviera más protagonismo en la historia ya que al principio solo es un personaje más, un tipo loco berrinchudo que no se baña y que no le interesa gobernar ya que sólo aparece al final como una luz en la oscuridad para solucionar todo el embrollo que causaron los monjes y los otros personajes, también es increíble que ANDREJ a sus 8 años no se diera cuenta que su mamá estuviera embarazada, ¿o sea como? Y también de un capítulo a otro el autor nos cuenta que AGNES y CYPRIAN ya estaban enamorados y que saben que su amor es mutuo, ¿cómo? si en el capítulo anterior todavía eran amigos y se veían como hermanos (jajaja).
Lo que si me gustó es que hay muchas referencias históricas, tanto que hice varias búsquedas en Google para conocer los castillos, los puentes, los monasterios, hasta el río Moldava de Praga y sobre todo para saber más de los Papas y de RODOLFO II (todo un personaje en la vida real).

Por eso le doy 4 estrellas por que independientemente de la historia me quedo con las referencias históricas de los personajes, de los lugares y por supuesto del Códice Gigas.

¿lo recomendaría? Si te gustan las novelas históricas y medievales, claro que sí.

Un libro que en definitiva logra atrapar al autor sobre el peligro que logró generar el conocimiento en una época donde la religión era predominante y los miedos de las personas a lo post-mortem eran mucho mayores.

En general me parece un libro que no ataca directamente al autor y lo mantiene en suspenso hasta el último acto de la trama, con giros en la historia y un villano que todo el tiempo genera un miedo real, sin escrúpulos y dispuesto a todo, aunque al final eso mismo lo deja solo contra el mundo. El Padre Xavier es sin duda alguien con el que no quieres entablar nada, jamás en tu vida. Cyprian Khelsh parece el héroe que siempre tiene las respuestas, pero vive sumergido en un debate interno. Agnes Wiegant cierra como uno de los tres personajes importantes en la trama al que todo converge aunque ella no se de cuenta. Andrej es a mí parecer la decepción y el abuso en la coincidencia, su repercusión principal es ser el enlace entre las tropas del Emperador y el hermano de Agnes, fuera de eso su participación en la trama puede incluso removerse.

Overall an entertaining book, but with some flaws. Too many pages were wasted on details that were not essential to the book. I recall reading two whole pages on some random guy getting in a wrestle with a dog. Both the guy and the dog weren't main or secondary characters, let alone even slightly relevant to the plot. There were also a bit too many too many early chapters (often very short) that focussed on characters that were eventually dropped later in the book. As a result, it was sometimes hard to not mix up all the different names in the book. Last but not least, I was annoyed how much the women in the book (especially Agnes) acted as damsels in distress who seemed only motivated by romance, children and marriage. I normally am the first to complain when a book or film gets too woke, but the shallow way in which women were portrayed in this novel was pretty cringe.

Aside from this, I thought the Devil's Bible was a enjoyable book that got more interesting the longer I read it. The idea was cool, brother Xavier was fleshed out very well and the immersion was very convincing.

Geweldige trilogie.
Verhaal is verzonnen, maar alles eromheen is historisch juist, voor zover nu bekend is.

Jammer dat het derde deel in Nederland na productie direct werd afgeserveerd naar de ramsj. Omdat ik naarstig in de gaten hield wanneer eindelijk deel 3 zou verschijnen, wist ik dit vrij snel en kon ik in een ramsj dit deel voor 5 euro ophalen. Jammer dat dit deel zelfs slechts als pocket was uitgebracht. Deel 1 en 2 zijn prachtige hardcover uitgaven. Deel 2 heb ik trouwens ook nog alleen maar via de tweedehands markt van een particulier kunnen kopen. Onbegrijpelijk.
Alle drie de delen zijn overigens wel als e-book verschenen. Het is mij niet bekend of dat officiële uitgaven zijn, of door een liefhebber geproduceerd.

De Duivelsbijbel zelf is te bezichtigen in het museum in Stockholm, sinds het door Christina I werd meegenomen uit de Praagse Burcht in de dertigjarige oorlog.

Історико-містичний #роман , який влучив в 10 і став початком моєї домашньої бібліотеки.

Середньовічна #прага в усій своїй красі (якщо це можна так назвати) змушує головних героїв (людей з різних соціальних та економічних верств) робити дивні, імпульсивні, а інколи жорстокі вчинки, аби зберегти #життя собі та своїм рідним. 😔

#книга , яка також є головним героєм історії, маніпулює свідомостями та емоціями людей, які її хочуть привласнити, та тих, хто її захищає. 💀

Книга, яка потрапивши в лихі руки може зруйнувати #світ , адже написана самим бісом.

Книга, яка буде подорожувати з одного покоління в інше і спокушатиме, аби її силу випустили на волю.

Кіпріан, Агнес та їхня #донька Александра ставлять на #терези своє життя, щоб не дати злим людям заволодіти магічним артифактом.

Хто переможе в битві не на життя, а на #смерть ?

El inicio es un tanto lento, esperaba más acción y misterio al rededor del libro pero desde el punto de vista histórico está muy bien, otra cosa a tener en cuenta es que desde el inicio sabes que habrá gran cantidad de personajes a los cuales no es necesario tomarles tanta importancia ni romperte la cabeza tratando de comprender quien es quien. Con que sepas quien son Cyrian, Agnes y Andrej ya la hiciste.
Buena historia, no encontrarás grandes avances en la historia de forma rápida pero tampoco es malo.

Tak tento příběh šel naprosto mimo mě. I když mám historii a historické knihy ráda, tady mi vadilo, že příběh neměl jasně dané schéma a byl poměrně rozvláčný. Knize se nedá upřít, že se v ní stále něco děje, otázkou ale zůstává, zda je to pro čtenáře podstatné a zajímavé. Knihu jsem dočetla spíš z principu, než že by mě bavila, stále jsem doufala, že to důležité přijde... V každém případě, do druhého dílu, už se rozhodně pouštět nebudu.

Pensé que sería una historia diferente, pero me gustó como se presentó. Mucha intriga y conspiración, y de fondo una historia de amor imposible y otra historia de amor desdichada. Un libro basado en hechos reales con un toque por parte del autor. Todo lo que ocurre alrededor del misterio del Codex Gigas que así se presenta tiene un toque de mistisismo.

La Biblia del Diablo esa lleno de misterio, redactado de manera increíble mezclando hechos históricos y ficción, este libro nos cuenta varias historias que al final se encuentran en algún punto, sin duda esta recomendado ya que es muy rápido e interesante de leer a pesar de su extenso tamaño no hay pagina que no te atrape una gran historia de avaricia, poder, hermandad, esperanza, fe y amor.

No es habitual en mi, pero en este caso me cuesta describir que me ha gustado y que no de esta novela. Tengo una sensación muy plana, vas leyendo. No te aburres pero tampoco te motivas. No es emocionante, ni anodina. Hay buenas descripciones pero sin ser cargantes. Muchos personajes aunque quizás no todos sean necesarios. Y la trama, para mi es lo más flojo.
Y el final..... muy flojo.

Es un buen libro, me costo trabajo al principio por los nombres difíciles y las historias diferentes. También es lenta los primeros capítulos pero después de la mitad la historia es mucho mejor y más fluida, más fácil de leer y continuar. Termina teniendo romance y conspiración.

La verdad tuve muchísimas expectativas. El libro inició de una forma muy atrayente, pero poco a poco se fue diluyendo y la historia no me atrabapa. Sentía que era muy muy muy monótona y mientras relacionaba cada personaje, cuando se encontró la razón de cada uno, perdió más fuerza.

Nach 100 Seiten abgebrochen, nur noch ins Ende reingelesen. Weder die Figuren noch die Story konnten mich fesseln, trotz dass ständig etwas passiert ist. Zu abgehoben. Ins Ende habe ich noch reingelesen, hat aber auch nicht zum Weiterlesen verlockt.

Un libro necesario para entender la importancia del documento que se conoce como "la biblia del diablo", dicho documento reposa en Suecia, aunque la leyenda dice algo más. Creo que el libro podría tener menos páginas de extensión, pero resulta estratégico que tenga 666 páginas, exactas.
