I did not connect with this story at all. I love the ideas behind the games, but the conceit that a secret rivalry between assassins and templars made it to China stretches my suspension of belief too far. The action scenes and art were nothing special, and the plot and characters were standard movie/video game tie in standard. Not the book for me right now.

What can I say? I have been craving a Shao Jun story ever since I watched the short video of her appearance in Ezio's final moments. I am a huge Assassin Creed fan and the idea of a female Chinese assassin who is hell bend on revenge just is something I absolutely wanted and this manga totally delivered. I am always fascinated by Shao Jun's story and character but never found a source of her story. The art is gorgeous and exactly my favorite style of manga. Her character is also everything I wished for for years. So I am definitely following up with this series.

I enjoyed this book. It was pretty much what I expected a revenge story staring Shao Jun, but it is also a mission and a twist in the story light still allowing the Templar Knights to steal victory in the future.

Great artwork, and a good story. With a good helping of action. To be fair, I was expecting a bit more action and fights. However, I think some things have been saved for vol 2, possibly the training Jun went through.

A very good start that left me wanting more as soon as I finished it. I am all in to follow Shao Jun on her adventures. There are a lot of questions yo answer as well as at least 4 more targets to deal with and many more people to save, pesent and future.

GN are not my thing, but as the plot thickened I can see why people really enjoy them. Artwork very good. Just didn't like that it went so fast and leaves you hanging.

I have a passing knowledge of the AC universe and, because of that, I picked this up. I would say it's a decent read, nothing too spectacular. It's a fun action story that flip flops between modern times and the past, showcasing the eternal conflict of the Templars and Brotherhood.

Both main characters feel flat, but that's to be expected when you have so much getting introduced. A lot of names are thrown around very quickly and it's a bit difficult to keep up with all the varying characters as so many come and go in this first volume. It's very obviously set-up for a bigger series (which, yea, duh), but it really feels like volume 0 more than anything.

But, I can definitely see promise, and there's good groundwork here to make a good story.

Assassins creed jsem nikdy nehrála, avšak zaujal mě obal knížky a taky jsem si chtěla zkusit přečíst nějakou mangu.
Osobně mě to moc nebavilo, nejspíš manga nebude úplně můj styl.

When genetic memories are unlocked a treasure can be sought.

So for those that abhor violence I am not sure why you are considering reading a book with the word Assassin in the title but you should know that yes there is violence, blood, and plenty od death in this volume alone as well as some torture. On the bright side the mangaka could have made the scenes considerably more gory but decided to keep the violence levels to typical videogame standards so anyone seriously wounded is often obscured or covered.

One thing I notice is common enough in the Assassin Creed manga series (and possibly the games/movie) is the Templar organization has been hunting down a special treasure and tend to cause individuals with the memories of their Assassin ancestors (found in their DNA) to experience the world their ancestors once lived and fought within. In this case the series of books is being based on the videogame "Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China" and honestly the whole scan your DNA memory thing is one of the few things I am not fond of the series so I am glad to see their are plenty of scenes in the past with only a few modern interruptions here and there. That said this is just the first volume of the series so we will have to see how things turn out as the girl who channels Shao Jun's memories experiences why sometimes an Assassin is needed for the job and if she discovers the truth that she is being manipulated by those that should be feared and yet stopped.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I’m going to mention that I’ve never played the Assassin’s Creed games, nor have I seen the live action movie, and I think that impacted my enjoyment of this manga. The synopsis sounded interesting enough for me to pick it up, but I honestly think you need prior knowledge of the AC universe to understand most of what is happening. As it stands on its own, I think it relies on you knowing much of the lore before you delve in. I spent much of it not understanding much of what was happening.

However, a manga or any type of media needs to stand on its own, and Blade of Shao Jun feels like an extension. That can be good for fans of Assassin’s Creed, it doesn’t give a crux to new fans with the world. Many of the explanations felt surface level, and much of it was left unexplained, so the world building felt thin, but like I mentioned before I think it relies on you knowing the lore beforehand.

The art is lovely, the settings and action scenes are eye catching and pleasing. I really wish I had more to say, but it’s nothing amazing. If I had been an Assassin’s Creed fan then maybe I would like it more. That’s why I’m giving it a three, because I think this is a ‘it’s a not for me’ situation.

I received an eARC courtesy of VIZ Media via NetGalley & Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

As a relative newcomer to the world of Assassin's Creed (I have a limited amount of knowledge from my husband's love of the videogames), I didn't really feel confused by the plot, characters or world of this manga. There are certainly things that I am missing due to my overall lack of having read anything else in this world, but it wasn't enough that it took away from the enjoyment of the story. The artwork was fantastic and, while a bit light, the story was a good teaser for more volumes to come.

For Libraries: While not marketed as a YA graphic, this volume didn't have any content that was too alarming. Certainly nothing that makes it worse than some others that populate my shelves-it might actually be quite tame compared to others.

A great read that greatly expands on the lore we were given in AC chronicles. I enjoyed the dynamic of the modern day story very much. Well drawn art as always is appreciated. I will be picking up the second volume soon.

Thank you to NeGalley and the publishers for the free copy of this manga in exchange for an honest review. My opinion was not affected by the free copy.

I'm a fan of Assassin's Creed but I'm not familiar with this particular story. After reading this first volume, I really want to play the game that Shao Jun is featured in. She seems like a really intriguing character and her story looks interesting. I also want to know about the modern-day stuff with Lisa. I'm wondering if this is part of the story of the game or if this is all new stuff.

The only real negative I have for this manga is that I don't think it's for casual manga readers. I feel like it caters more to fans of the series, though it's hard to say for sure since I do understand things like the Animus, Abstergo, the Precursor items, et cetera. I don't want to judge based on this first volume but some of these things aren't really explained. Then again, I feel like other manga just throws stuff at the reader that is explained in pieces. It just might be harder for people not familiar with Assassin's Creed to read this.

The other negative is that it ends on a cliffhanger. I can't believe I have to wait so long to see what happens next! But I could say that's also a positive, since I'm going to read the next volume the second I'm able.

As for positives, like I said earlier, the characters are interesting. The art is nice, the action is engaging, and the story I feel is paced well between modern-day and the historical sections. Abstergo manipulating Lisa is a chilling change of pace and I want to see where that goes just as much as Shao Jun's journey. I really hope they show Florence (pretty sure that's referring to her being trained by Ezio) but if not, then I have even more reason to play her game.

So I'd recommend this to fans, and while I think eventually non-fans might like it, I'd say wait until there are more volumes.

Assassin’s creed quoi !

Ok, I want to make summary to understand the story so far, there was the main character name Lisa huang who had a problem in her life because of her violence actions against her loves ones for some reasons. She decided to met dr kagami for some consultation & put Lisa in one of the device called "Animus" - it's a machine that allows her to access the memories of her accestor - shao Jun. Shao Jun is the daughter of the court lady & concubine of the previous emperor, zhengde also she's the assassin. She's avenged for her comrades & the people who been suffered along the death people n killed gu dayoung for it. The master that dayoung called him in the end, the m(master) called the guards to burned down the village especially the port place. Shao Jun - when she was 5 years old - she saw the person tied up & the guards begin to kill the person right in front of everyone eyes - me : I was like, she too young to see this gruesome thing, what kind of guy bring the little girls to see this. That master stole the box that shao tried to protect it. There are many things I want to know about that dr kagami & Mari(Lisa's friend) - they're so sus this scene. I feel like I don't trust Lisa friend for some reason because of Lisa's flashback in school life. I wished dr kagami become allied with Lisa n not betrayed her after she's had done for her in consultation. Shao Jun kind remind me of mulan & the eagle scene though.

The first part of a Manga series adapting the story of the computer game Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, set in 1526.
After the Brotherhood of Assassins is all but wiped out in Ming Dynasty China, its sole surviving member Shao Jun flees to Florence to seek the aid of Mentor Ezio Auditore. Two years later she returns to China bent on revenge against the Templars who have seized control of the nation.

Whilst I've never played the game this is based on, I loved the set-up of the story from the word go, with Ming Dynasty China being a perfect setting for the story and Shao Jun being a very cool protagonist.
To my surprise, the modern day sections, with a woman called Lisa using the Animus, were actually quite engaging too. Since the very first AC game, the stuff going on in the modern day has always been an annoyance breaking up the historical action, but here it adds a genuinely interesting new layer to the book.

Unfortunately, general style and concept aside, the actual story of this book is kind of repetitive, with the game mechanics of 'go there, sneak in, kill boss character, repeat' rapidly becoming the format of the book as a whole. It means that, whilst it's an enjoyable read, there are no surprises to be found here.

Asasynka potrafi zaskoczyć i wzruszyć. Miecz Shao Jun. Chiny. Assassin’s Creed wydane przez Wydawnictwo Egmont to porywająca manga o przeciwniczce zakonu templariuszy, którą przychodzi nam poznać przez pryzmat Lisy Yang. Niecierpliwie czekam na kolejne części!

Thank you to NetGalley, VIZ Media, and Minoji Kurata for the opportunity to read this manga in exchange for an honest review.

I'm usually a bit skeptical when it comes to books (or other media adaptations) based on video games, but this one was pretty good. The main assassin is Shao Jun, who is granted the responsibility of caring for a special secret box. She doesn't know what is in it...yet...just that the Templars are after it. When she loses the box, she must get it back by any means necessary.

We have a huge reflection of the game when Japanese student, Lisa, is the one being experimented on with the animus. While she thinks this will help correct some of her personality issues, she might be being used for more sinister means when it comes to finding the box and its contents.

The art is nice and the Chinese aspect with the locations and lore woven in really pull through to create that Assassin's Creed atmosphere. This is a fun manga whether you are a fan of the games or haven't even played. Also, a female lead for the win. Need I say more?

This is a very good read for those that enjoy the Assassin's Creed gaming universe, but are a little bit too young for the larger novelisations. The art was easy to follow and it did have the Assassin's Creed air to it. It read like one of the game missions; set on revenge, save some people in a fort, escape with minimal casualties. The present day Templars are very much like those in the game, not really caring about any individual as long as they meet their goals. Though the art is in the traditional manga style, they got the Assassin's clothing spot on and I really liked the hidden blade, not just on her wrist but on her foot as well. I liked that the main character is a girl so I think young people of all genders would enjoy this if they like ninja's and adventure. It is good for a reluctant reader as well because the story is not too complex, and it doesn't waffle on about things as it keeps in with action and things happening so as not to distract. Excellent book, I will definitely want a copy for my school library, I think it will fly off the shelf!

As I began reading Assassin’s Creed: Blade of Shao Jun, I was eager to know if her story was considered canon or not. Interestingly, my research showed that Shao Jun actually has TWO stories; a novel series (or is it just a standalone novel?) and this manga series. Handily, the manga is considered canon, while the novel is not. Moving forward with this in consideration, I lapped up her story.
I’m not sure how unique or odd her story is in comparison to all the others, or what it means to the whole story, as Assassin’s Creed is something from my childhood, therefore most of my memories of it aren’t too clear. With that in consideration, I chose to reserve a lot of my opinions on her story.
Besides that, Blade of Shao Jun is really fun to read. There’s almost always something happening, and I’m surprised that it contained so much in such a short volume. The narrative is good too, making you think about what’s happening, and call back to what you’d seen before. I’m curious to see where else this story goes, and what will happen to Shao Jun’s descendent.

This was my first ever manga. It was a bit odd and confusing reading from right to left but by the middle of the story I was used to it.

The plot has elements of mystery. It seems that Dr. Kagami has some ulterior motive in her mind. I can't say much about the artwork as this is my first manga. from a beginner's POV it was alright, nothing too great.

Overall I liked the story as I like such spy stories. I've never played any Assassin's creed game but this manga has sparked my interest in the Assassin's creed franchise. I'll definitely play this game when I get my own gaming laptop.

I have never played an Assassin's Creed video game or seen a movie. Shao Jun's ancestor is strapped into some kind of machine where she can relive her ancestor's memories. Unknown to her, a group of people is using her to find a long-lost treasure. Shao Jun was entrusted with the treasure by the assassin's group when she escaped a mass slaughter. Now, Shao Jun has returned to China to take revenge on those who killed her brotherhood. #AssassinsCreedBladeofShaoJunVol1 #NetGalley

I have played almost all of the Assassin's Creed games, but this was my first delve into media other than the games and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am somewhat familiar with the story of Shao Jun from Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China, but it was fun to read it manga format. The story feels very much like an Assassin's Creed game, especially with the past and present storylines, so I am excited to see where the story goes.

This was actually a lot better than I'd expected it to be!

I love the Assassin's Creed universe, but couldn't get into the 2D platformers this manga is based on. When I saw this manga at work I was really excited- I could finally get the story!

I don't know how closely it follows the games, but the story is easy to read here and the art is very clean! If I come across other volumes, I'll be sure to pick them up!
