For more than ten years, Elizabeth Peavey has been traveling around the state of Maine, and writing about her wide-ranging experiences and discoveries in Down East magazine. This book collects her very best columns and essays. In a light and entertaining style laced with lots of entertaining humor, she weaves a wide-ranging tapestry that will give readers a vivid and fresh view of the state.
I really did not like this book from the start. I was pretty close to a DNF but since it was so short, I decided to stick it out. I will admit that it got better as it went on and almost pulled a third star from me. Almost.
There were a lot of hokey Maine references and I just wasn't a fan of the writing style. I understand that these were magazine articles and to my dissatisfaction, they read as such. The voice and tone at times seemed "fake Maine". Some of the stories seemed disingenuously pumped up and covered with frills. I personally just wasn't a fan of how it hit my brain when I read it. I have nothing against Elizabeth Peavey and I am sure she is a great person. She is a die hard Maine supporter so that means we are both on the same team.
If Peavey ever reads this and is offended by the low rating, just know that I also gave Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" 2 stars... and that thing won a Pulitzer prize....
