Splotch is a small bird who lives high up in a tree. One day, she lays an egg. It is small and very spotty, but Splotch thinks it is perfect in every way! This is the story of Splotch and the adventure of her roly-poly egg. Follow the dotted line and see where it goes. Along the way, find lots of animals and a butterfly on every page. Accented with spot lamination, the roly-poly egg appears to leap from the pages of this brilliantly illustrated picture book. When Splotch's egg finally cracks, children can lift flaps to find a colorful surprise!
I LOVE the illustrations in this book -- the words are just kinda meh. The story was a little simple for my preschoolers (I kinda felt like some of them at the end were just kinda like, ".....OK..." Instead of delighted). Maybe I'd do this one in an art story time instead, so we could talk about the artwork and such instead of the egg aspect? I dunno, maybe I could have used it differently to get a better reaction or maybe I was rushing through it. I'd try again, and I think it'd work GREAT with toddlers.
Peely wally lives in a nice tree. She laid an egg and she was so happy but then her egg rolled away and she was really sad. It rolled on to a giraffe and did a loop the loop. Then it was kicked by a zebra to a crocodile. It nearly landed in the crocodiles mouth but an elephant caught it and whooshed it out of their trunk to a monkey, who threw it to his monkey friends, who passed it peely wally. Peely wally’s egg was back safe and sound until it cracked and out popped a baby bird called Rose. Then the baby saw her mummy and was happy to be with her.
This is a very cute picture book about Peely Wally who lays a spotty egg! Unfortunately the egg rolls off the branch and is somersaulted around a number of other animals such as a giraffe, zebras and crocodile. Luckily the egg arrives safety back with Peely Wally!
The illustrations are very cleverly drawn like a child’s finger paint picture, which draw you into the book.
This is suitable for a KS1 story time, as it will give the opportunity to discuss all the different animals in the book. There is also a lovely ‘lift the flap’ egg at the end where you can meet Peely Wally’s colourful chick!
‘Peely Wally’ is a wonderfully illustrated picture book written by Kali Stileman, rivalling that of Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. Peely Wally is a small bird who has set up home high up in a tree. One day she lays an egg and with that the adventure begins. A superbly engaging book with plenty for children to see and do on each page from following the loopy line of the egg pathway as it passes from one animal to another, as well as searching for the hidden butterfly on each page. Children will especially love the special surprise at the end!
Peely Wally by Kali Stileman - adorable picture book about an egg who rolled away after the mom jumped for joy at laying the egg. It has been a while since I saw this type of mixed media where the main character almost looks like it is finger painted on the page. Quite a cute little story.
Splotch lays a roly-poly polka-dotted egg that escapes the nest and rolls on its erratic, unpredictable way (after all, eggs are not spheres and so roll in ellipses and curlicues, and other patterns) through the jungle. Along the way, readers meet other brightly colored jungle denizens, before the egg is returned (intact!) to Splotch -- just in time to welcome baby bird!
Very young children will want to trace the path of the roly-poly egg's adventure with their fingers over the heavy glossy pages. The lift-the-flap egg will be a happy surprise -- along with the ending!
A lively story with a fun finish, perfect for story time (it held the attention of a crowd of preschoolers who also enjoyed the ending). Another charm is the art of the bird, a kid-like splotch of color like a great energetic scribble, and of course, the bird's name is Splotch. An adventure that ends with a pop up and a loving message? Terrific!
A red bird, Splotch, lays a brightly colored, spotted egg, which rolls away on an adventure. After crossing paths with many different animals, the egg rolls back to mama Splotch, just in time to hatch and reveal a beautiful, blue spotted, baby bird. I love the clever splotchy bird illustrations and egg reveal flaps.
This book is so freakin cute! I read this for storytime a while ago, but I remember really liking the book! The illustrations are really fun and cute. The way you lift the egg flaps to find the baby bird inside the egg was really cool and I loved how colorful the bird was. Great story and illustrations!
This book is a lot of fun to read for a group of small children. Sound effects make the rolling egg more meaningful and funny to the kids, and each new egg-venture is interesting for them. I love the art and had the 2-year-olds make scribble birds (scribbling, adding precut eyes and beak) which were all adorable.
Splotch was a small red bird who laid a perfect spotted egg. In her excitement she jumped up and down and shook the branch that bounced her perfect spotted egg. It rolled down a giraffe's neck, then by some zebras and continued on a journey bouncing around with various animals. And at the end of that journey there was a crack, crack, crack. Out pops a beautiful spotty birdy. This is an excellent book for parents and teachers to introduce young readers to animals and color. The illustrations are vivid and fun. All will love this book.
Very cute. The illustrations are big and bright, and the story is simple but fun. Splotch lays an absolutely perfect egg (even if it is small and spotty)... but her egg rolls away from her and past all the other animals. Will it get back to her? I'd like to use this for storytime (eggs, animals, birds)!
Little Bird called Peely Wally lays a spotted egg, it accidentally starts to fall off a tree branch when a variety of animals catch and kick the egg on a journey but luckily ends back with Peely Wally in one piece. Then the egg hatches and a spotted chick comes out. Very cute book, could be used to emphasis everyone being different and that is what makes everyone special.

I think this book has very vibrant visuals and is good for toddlers and prek age. The storyline is simple, but the illustrations make up for the slight lack of substance. Very cute book overall!
Very cute. However, the lovely fold out egg at the end means that this would fall apart at the hands of any two or three year old in short order. Which means this is going to have to go in my "reading room" collection.
This would make a great one-on-one sharing book as there is lots to talk about! Follow the dotted line to where the egg goes next. Ask your little one - where do you think it will go? What will happen if it does?
Bold colors, ample white space, with a simple story and a peek-a-boo at the end. An activity for older kids is to follow a dotted line along the pages, representing the path of the egg.
Bright vibrant colors and lines that readers can follow to see where the egg goes in the story. So, very interactive for a younger reader. I love Splotch, the bird, and the spotty egg. The story is cute and readers will have fun with it.
The story is cute and short enough to read to toddlers. The illustrations are very creative: the bird's body is swirly fingerpainting, with eyes, beak and feet added. The rest of the animals are stylized illustrations, very cute. Nice surprise at the end.
A splotchy, spotted, colorful tale about families and belonging. I used this for my 2-3 year old storytime; the simplicity of the text and the large, bright illustrations make this a perfect read-aloud for very young children.
