FIRST LOVE ISN'T FOREVER...

Exhibit Faith's little sister, Skye, who muddled through her first divorce at the tender age of twenty-one. Faith has always provided damage control when Skye's love life gets too reminiscent of a daytime drama. But now that Faith has finally found the job, if not the man, of her dreams -- as a culinary writer, currently living la dolce vita in Italy -- she can't just jet back to small-town Minnesota to help her suddenly pregnant little sister heal her broken heart and anemic bank account.

BUT NEVER SAY NEVER!

Faith has been putting off this homecoming for years, ever since her dad left her family in the lurch, her mother left her in charge of Skye, and a sub-zero case of cold feet led her to call off the engagement to her high school sweetheart, Flynn. But a return to the amber fields of grain might just be what Faith needs to gain some perspective on her past -- and figure out her future. It's been way too long since her last love affair...memories of Flynn still get in the way of every man she meets. But if she and Flynn are really meant to be, why does the path to happily-ever-after have so many potholes?

This is the part where I’m supposed to brag about all my illustrious accomplishments, but honestly, I’d rather talk about my dogs and brag about some of the things I haven’t done:

I’ve never been to prison*, court-ordered rehab*, or splashed across the cover of a salacious weekly gossip tabloid with my ladybits on display**.

I’m a Leo, a middle child, and a formidable Trivial Pursuit opponent. I read everything I can get my hands on, from the classics to comic books. I don’t drink coffee because, frankly, I’m high strung enough without adding caffeine into the mix. Here is the true story of how I became a novelist:

So I had just started seeing this guy, and on our second or third date, he invited me to be his guest at a family wedding. Being young and free and a bit commitment-shy, I was about to decline until he casually mentioned that the bride was a successful romance novelist. Well, the second I heard that, I had to go. Being a writer had always been my dream job, and I’d never met anyone who’d actually beaten the odds and made the leap into big-time publishing. So I RSVP-ed, sidled up to the bar at the reception, waited until the bride and all her author friends uncorked the good champagne, and then peppered them with endless questions about writing, editing, and landing an agent. They were so funny and encouraging and generous with their time and advice. (And drunk!) Next thing you know, I had joined a critique group and was knee-deep in the manuscript that would eventually become MY FAVORITE MISTAKE. The open bar at that wedding changed my life forever.

Oh, and the guy who invited me to the wedding? I ended up marrying him. All together: awww…

I live in Arizona in a very cute fixer-upper that my husband and I bought in a burst of can-do, pioneering confidence. We thought it would be fun to embark on a series of do-it-yourself renovations. Yeah. I know. Turns out, replacing baseboard that’s been painted over 15 times since 1958 is not as easy as those Home Depot commercials would lead you to believe. Also, freshly-installed lawn drip systems and “helpful” dogs are a bad mix.

Friday and RoxieSpeaking of dogs, here we have the indefatigable canine lawn maintenance crew: Roxie and Friday. Both were rescued from the pound when they were puppies. I think they’re Rhodesian Ridgeback mixes. (Probably. Maybe? Anything’s possible.) Roxie is the brains of the operation and Friday is…well, he’s very sweet. And so indolent he could be mistaken for a piece of furniture, which I consider a very desirable trait in a family dog.

I absolutely love hearing from readers, so please feel free to email me, with the caveat that I am often on deadline/on the road/on the ragged edge of sanity, so it may be awhile before you get a reply. Just know that it’s not you; it’s me!

Have fun exploring the site, and if you have any questions about my new book, my backlist, or finding an agent…I’ll be right over there at the bar.

*Yet.

Barely 2 stars. After this author's very enjoyable Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service, this was such a disappointment. I found the plot by turns dreary and silly and the main characters unlikeable. Faith is whiny, spineless and not bright. Her sister is a stupid, stupid woman. Faith's old boyfriend, Flynn, is a hot, surly guy who is still in a snit because Faith broke up with him 10 years earlier when they were 18. None of thses people show any sign of having matured in the ensuing decade. The best thing I can say is this was a fast read and I was happy to be done with it.

2.5 but rounding up because this wasn't terribly written, just so boring that I gave up. I did read 167 pages so feel I can count this as "read."
The problem was that there was no real plot or conflict between the two lovers. And I didn't care about them particularly.
Basic plot is a teenage couple breaks up because the girl was immature and not ready for a lifelong commitment. They don't see each other for 10 years. His heart is broken and she apparently didn't think about him all that much. But then there is a reason for her to go back to Minnesota where they met as children and grew up.
So they are together again but with baggage to sort out. Yawn.
I think I would rather read a book that is over my head (not fun) then something this trivial.

This book was just ok. I'm normally a big fan of Beth Kendrick, but this book just kind of dragged on. There was way too much chatter between characters that didn't need to be there. I would have rather had more information about the main character's background, her history with her sister, and not so much just the ex boyfriend. I know it's technically a romance novel but it just didn't feel very romantic! I'll read her other books since I've liked some of them in the past, but this is not one I would recommend.

This a cute book, and it was quick and fun to read. It's what I would describe as "beach reading," though in my case, I read it on the plane. If your flight is more than 2 hours long, pack an extra book.

As a child, I've always been surrounded by close ones mocking the genre. Danielle Steel or Sandra Brown were crucified as the epytome of breeding a cancer form that devours the Great Literature through simplicity of both ideas and expression. Of course I ventured into forming my own opinion and I stand by the habit of reading one such book every 10 years or so.

Don't even remember what book I chose in my teen years, but in my 20s it was the distasteful and hyped Eat Pray Love. Now, it was more of a random choice from a shelf. Picked five books from the same romance collection, read the fourth cover and went on to choose the most interesting plot.

On the plus side, it made me laugh. I laughed WITH the author and the story, not OF it. In that aspect, it was fine, also the storytelling in itself was well paced, characters were as one-dimensional and stereotypical as you'd expect and, of course, the ending was by no means a surprise, as the love story always has the predictable resolve.

There are two things that concern me, though.

1. I cannot help but think that any intelligent author knows the consequences of what he/she promotes. What's the point in solving the main character's dilemma so easily - love wins the game 100-0 in record time, she doesn't seem at all inclined to put things rightly in the balance. As soon as she finds love (again), there's the absolution and unrealism of not caring about her previous endeavors in Cali. Frankly, there are A LOT of red flags and mockery about coming back to Minnesota brought up by the author, but nothing matters anymore. Cali-bad. Traditional life with family and old friends - good. Frankly put, the last phrase of the book is so cliché and unfitting. Why do we need such form of candy-coated propaganda for the Midwest anachrony?

2. Tied to point number one and a certain base of readers, neither the psychological struggle nor the sexual tension are sufficiently explored, as if the aim was always to appeal to highly conservative people. Isn't it the most thrilling part of writing a love story? How restrained is the imagination of the author if there's no obvious frustration in not going far in the depiction? Or is it a case of pop producers altering the initial spice of the manuscript? Either way, it's toned down and feels ambiguous, thus rendering Faith unrealistic as a character. Just witness how short-lived is the idea of them going back together in Cali. Immediately, she accepts the inferior posture of adapting to the place he identifies himself with.

In brief, you could read this and enjoy it as it is. But don't ever take it as a life lesson.

My Favorite Mistake by Beth Kendrick
3h 24m narrated by Rachel Fulginiti, 304 pages

Genre: Women's Fiction > Chick Lit;
Romance > Contemporary Romance; Contemporary Adult Fiction, Humor, Family

Featuring: Sisters, Minnesota, Italy, California, Ex, Business, Second Chance Trope, Drama

Rating as a movie: R for adult content and language

Songs for the soundtrack: "My Favorite Mistake" by Sheryl Crow, "Welcome To The Jungle" by Guns N' Roses, "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels

My rating: DNF @19% Ch. 5

My thoughts: 📱13% 1:03:14 Ch. 4 - Chapters 1 got 3 playings, chapter 2 got 2, on account I fell asleep and woke up on chapter 6. Falling asleep on an audiobook in the middle of the afternoon is a bad sign, but I did walk 8 miles this morning. Bottom line, I don't like this plot, I'd rather listen to these songs than read about them. I'm going to take a music break and I may be skimming the blurbs for this author in the future.
📱19% 1:32:39 Ch. 5 - Nuh-uh! Life's too short. MC is a pushover, the sister is an idiot, the ex is a jerk, and the plot is hanging on by a thread. I'm moving on.

Recommend to others: Nope. I'll try another one. She has some good stories but this one looks like a dud, or just okay.

After reading about a dozen Beth Kendrick books, I finally decided to read her first (award-winning) romance. And it is easy to see why this one launched her career. Faith fled her hometown and her first love at the age of 18. Ten years later, she gets a phone call from her younger sister begging her to come back home and help her out. Skye is on the verge of losing the neighborhood bar she had opened with Faith's life savings. Her husband has run out on her. And her pregnancy test came back positive. Against her better judgement, Faith comes to Skye's rescue. Back in her small hometown of Lindbrook, Minnesota, Faith learns that there is a third owner of the bar - her childhood sweetheart, Flynn. Old flames die hard but so do broken promises. Despite the undeniable sexual attraction, these two have some troubling history. So the big question is, can they overcome the past to embrace the present and plan a future? The path of true love is not smooth but it sure is entertaining.

Okay, so I finished the book. But, was it good? It wasn’t the greatest… definitely not a keeper. I mean it had its sorta cute moments and some funny moments. I felt it was mainly serious though. I didn’t like the fact that when they kissed each other that meant ‘their back together’. To me that’s not how it works. Like you have to ask if your together, etc. I did like the ending though. Short and simple to the point. Plus, it did kind of drag on.
I really liked the cover though! I thought it was cute and different. I’m not gonna give it away but I like how you find out what the heart and ‘F’ is for🫶🏽

Older sister Faith is called back to MN to help her younger sister Skye with a bar she is 1/3 owner in with Faith's ex, Flynn. Skye's second husband has left her, and she's only 24. The bar was losing money, but the three of them (with friends) figure out a way to save it, and Faith and Flynn's relationship is restored.

I would just like the record to show that the audiobook version I listened to did not have that heinous cover. I don't hate when book characters make stupid decisions when those decisions are in harmony with their characters, but when book characters make stupid decisions that don't make sense with who they are and are just to move the story, then I hate that. And this book had that.

Fun, and fast-paced. I purchased it thinking it was part of the Black Dog Bay series, but I was wrong, and the only dog in this one was a negative experience near the end... Kinda found myself editing/re-writing some of the dialogue in my head, or thinking I would have just walked away so many times... Really loved Leah and her family- would like to read their story.

The story itself was pretty plain, I guess is how I'd describe it. You'll see that I gave it four stars though. What I enjoyed was the wit and the Minnesota references. The romance cliches were all there. Some other funny things that I really enjoyed were that the editing wasn't the highest quality. There were some extra words and typos which makes sense since it's probably a small publishing company. The jumps that were made were so drastic and out of the blue that it didn't make logical sense which I enjoyed and made me laugh. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Minnesota and wants a very easy read that doesn't want to expend a lot of brain power.

Make no mistake about it, My Favorite Mistake is an easy read and the perfect book to curl up with and have a few laughs.

Not long after high school graduation, Faith left the small town life of the suburbs of Minneapolis for the California sunshine never looking back on the family problems and first love she left behind. Ten years later, she's a culinary writer traveling the world. However, her simple and basically carefree life comes to a screeching halt when she gets a desperate phone call from her younger sister, Skye, who's in over her head with love and money troubles.

As reluctant as she is, Faith makes the trek back from L.A. to small town Minnesota. While she's there, she not only helps Skye get back on her feet, but she's also forced to face Flynn - that first love of hers. How do you face that person who crushed you and still may hold a piece of your heart? It's suffocating, and Kendrick characterized it beautifully. However, while Faith's first instinct is to run (again) back to L.A., ultimately, she stays and gains some much needed perspective about her life. Why did she leave? Will she leave again?

I always love novels with the coming home storyline. While I've never been in that situation, something about the circumstances surrounding a character's reluctant homecoming always pulls me in. This book was no different. You'll find yourself laughing and cheering for Faith as she discovers why leaving Minnesota - and Flynn - was her favorite mistake.

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. The reviews I'd read were good, the plotline sounded fun, but the delivery was lacking. It really felt like most of the novel had a lot of (some valid, some just too drawn out) issues between the two main characters that ended up getting resolved way too quickly and neatly in the end. I felt like a whole lot more should have been needed between the two to get them to that happy place than what actually was shown in the book. It almost felt like Kendrick was writing along and then suddenly said, Hey! Look at the time! I've got to wrap this up! and then, boom! Happy ending. Back to the library for its quarterly used book sale for this title.

This was written in the first person, which I don't really like for romance, as we never get inside the hero's head, so it's harder to understand his character.

I liked that the small-town theme wasn't annoying. I've read too many romances that portray small-town life as some kind of heaven, while city living is for soul-less idiots, and it's a theme I'm totally sick of. But that didn't happen here.

I was disappointed that there was no HEA ending. While I understand why the author chose to leave it as a HFN, since the hero and heroine had only just worked out their issues at the end of the book, I like a commitment. The HEA ending is a big reason why I read romance, so I'm always disappointed when a novel doesn't have one.
