A instituição a que chamamos "propriedade privada" constitui um dos mais constantes traços, na cultura ocidental, da posição do indivíduo em face da sociedade e do poder político, e da articulação entre ambos. Todavia, essa mesma instituição tem suscitado as mais diversas e opostas reacções ao longo da História. Um mesmo autor, o filósofo socialista Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865), conseguiu mesmo a proeza de afirmar simultaneamente que "a propriedade é o roubo" e que "a propriedade é a liberdade". A persistência, ainda hoje, de reacções muito díspares provocadas pela propriedade privada é a prova da necessidade de compreender esta instituição e de tomar posição sobre ela, como condição da compreensão da sociedade em que vivemos.

The abolition of property is the design of communism. There's not any property, but bourgeois property, private property. Under the concept of personal property, its naturalization in the social body (as a moral) and in the political body (as a right), it hides, following Foucault's method, a whole genealogy and entire archaeology. Private property as a class instrument, as a historical definition of a particular type of domination, is the result of a historical process, of a "class struggle". In the words of Karl Marx, it was the French revolution of 1789 that brought the ruling class to the bourgeoisie in place of the old feudal aristocracy; bourgeois, industrialized and cosmopolitan society, in place of the old regime with its poetic connection to the land and its provincialism. Thus Marx and Engles write in the Communist Manifesto: "The French Revolution, e.g., it abolished feudal property in favour of bourgeois property" (Engels & Marx). And what is the bourgeoisie as a class if not the historical result of an intense struggle to establish the private property as an instrument of exploitation, as capital? Once again, the Manifesto is particularly enlightening: "Capital is not, therefore, a personal power, it is a social power" (Engels & Marx). The property relations through which the bourgeoisie is formed as a class and transforms the world economy require putting an entire society in motion, a whole way of social existence.

por vezes a linguagem é bastante complicada. por vezes soa um pouco pretensioso, ao não admitir realmente uma posição, refugiando-se em autores mais antigos. no entanto, é um bom livro para que o leitor se questione sobre o tema e as várias nuances que são introduzidas.
