A behind-the-scenes look at the making of one of country music's newest stars reveals the talent, triumphs, and struggle behind her "overnight" success, and the toll that stardom has taken on her personal life
I first read it as a teenager when it was new. The sticky notes suggest I picked it up again about ten years ago, but I can’t fathom that either time I enjoyed it as much as now.
The mistakes are very minor (misnaming a Wynonna single, for example) and are easily correctable compared to the absolute wealth of information included here. This book is ALL details. Every page has insight into the country music biz as it evolved from a backwoods genre to overtaking the mainstream.
An epilogue updated the narrative to approximately a year later, but I wonder now what the opinions were 3-5 years later, after enough time had passed to assess what all took place here. Specifically, how did the unrelated players react to what was happening in the book in the moment, and more importantly, in what ways did this book itself (including the industry knowledge that someone was writing book about — the Californian — Ken Kragen’s new ingenue) influence the industry’s treatment, especially at radio and retail, of Trisha Yearwood.
