Personal Response:
I did not enjoy reading I Cannot Go Back by Jimmy Snow, because the book was nothing like I expected it to be. I figured the book was about the author’s experience as a country music singer and the struggles he went through in the business. Instead, the book was about the author breaking away from the music scene and becoming a preacher. I also couldn’t relate to the story very much, but I did recognize some of the country music stars mentioned in the book.

Plot Summary:
This book is an autobiography. It starts out from the time the author, Jimmy Snow, was born to the present day. He grew up in the show business because his father is Hank Snow, a country music star. As a teenager, he became addicted to pills, and was drunk everyday. One night on the way to a bar, his car got hit by a drunk driver running from the police. For the next four months, he couldn’t walk. In November 1957, Jimmy wanted to commit suicide, but couldn’t go through with his plan. He then realized the music industry was not for him. He attended a seminary in St. Louis, Missouri to become a preacher. He then started going on revival tours throughout the southern United States, using the skills he learned from his dad on how to entertain. After a few years, he decided to start his own church in Nashville, Tennessee to appeal to country music stars. The most famous person who came to the church was Johnny Cash. On August 9, 1974, Jimmy went to the U.S. Capitol Building and gave the opening prayer for that session of congress. That morning he met with Richard Nixon, which turned out to be Nixon’s last day as president.

Characterization:
The main character in this book is the author: Jimmy Snow. He grew up in the country music scene in the early 1950’s. In 1957, he decided to become a preacher. He combined the tricks he had learned as a musician and applied it to his sermons. Jimmy also founded a church in Nashville, Tennessee for country music stars.

Setting:
This book took place mostly around the Nashville, Tennessee area from about 1952 to about 1974. This is important to the plot because the epicenter of country music, which Jimmy was involved in, is in Nashville, Tennessee. The time frame is important because the book makes references to Southern Religious Trends in the 1960’s. There are other areas talked about in the book such as West Virginia, Halifax, Canada, and Oklahoma. Jimmy was raised in all of these locations.

Recommendation:
I would recommend this book to people who are music fans and religious, because the story is about how Jimmy went from being in the music industry to being a preacher. Anyone in middle school and up could read this book as the reading level and word structure are not very complex. I would rate this book a two out of five.
